When I'm playing my Holy Priest, I don't mind so much the gear of the mage - as long as they play well (don't pull threat, don't Blink into a group, stay alive generally).
When I switch back to my mage, I sometimes forget the spells that I have that are particularly useful for groups:
- Ice Block: If you hit 40% life or less, use it. Cancel it early when you're healed.
- Mirror Image: You just got it at 80, don't forget it.
- Counterspell: One less frostbolt on the tank will make the healer happy.
- Spell Steal: Occasionally useful.
- Icy Veins: I know most wouldn't forget this for faster nukes, but I've found making Blizzard cast faster can be nifty for burning down groups (first boss in Nexus, first boss in HoL, etc).

You seem to be forgetting AoE faceroll only works when you outgear the heroic. Try have the whole group spamming Blizzard with fresh 80 gear and see how far you get. Heroics used to be damn difficult without the right tactics, and they still are if you / you're group aren't geared enough. As such, I would seriously suggest popping all of your Trinkets / Cooldowns whenever you get into a boss fight or a sticky situation that requires that little extra push. Also, as mentioned before, use Ice Block AND Invisibility. If your threat is getting too high, or you accidentally pull a mob, use Invisibility to clear your aggro, and Ice Block if you are on low health and think you may die.
