Patch 3.3.5 PTR: Unfinished Doomsday quest line removed

The quest chain, starting with the quest Tablets of Fire from Earthen Ring member Seer Bahura, was only available to Horde -- the Alliance version wasn't implemented. Players are asked to investigate the delay of a courier who is supposedly transporting artifacts of Titan origin from Northrend to Orgrimmar. Seer Bahura mentions that she's had troubling visions as of late, and hopes that the artifacts will help clear up the visions. The courier is outside near the Northrend zeppelin post, and he's under attack -- you have to defend him from a Twilight Seeker who is trying to get the Tablets of Flame from him. The Twilight Seeker is on a black drake, which falls in line with what we've heard about the Twilight's Hammer joining forces with the Black Dragonflight, but it's what she says while demanding the tablets that raises several questions. She states that she's going to kill the Earthen Ring member you're defending, and take the tablets back to Cho'gall.
Say what? Cho'gall? For those who are shaky on their Twilight's Hammer lore, Cho'gall is the leader of the organization, which Matthew Rossi covered a few weeks ago in Know Your Lore. What's surprising about this is that Cho'gall met his end at the end of the Warcraft comics run; I covered the series yesterday for those wanting to know what happened. Either Cho'gall magically managed to survive being blown apart by Atiesh, or there's someone impersonating him. Unfortunately, the quest chain ended abruptly before too much could be determined about the Twilight's Hammer and their connection to the strange Doomsayers that littered the Drag and offered helpful advice about the world's inevitable end.
Is Cho'gall actually returning? Does this mean we'll see Med'an, Garona, or any of the other characters from the Warcraft comics run as full-fledged NPCs in Cataclysm? We don't know just yet -- but check out the gallery for pictures of the quest chain from the PTR.

Perhaps, we might hope against hope, that the whole Me'dan thing has been wiped away and we're going to be the ones to deal with Cho'gall.
And we will never, ever need to here about about the irritating little bugger again.

Or, even better, Deathwing takes him...it...the bastard out as he explodes out of the Earth.
Hey, a man can dream...

The Black Dragonflight doesn't have a history of taking the places of powerful people; they have the habit of transforming into people who then become powerful.
Lord Prestor was a minor lordling in the mountains of northern Lordaeron when the Black Dragonflight (presumably) destroyed his holding. When Daval Prestor arrived at the capitol, he was little more than a beggar; only afterwards did he become powerful. His daughter Katrana followed a similar arc down south in Stormwind.
Of course, they cheat, using both other members of their flight and their own powerful magics to enhance their position.

The last panel of the last issue of the comic shows something that could be interpreted as Cho'gall rising from the ruins.

No! Don't you take this from me!

Personally I believe that with Deathwing and his offspring having a habit of taking the forms of people in a position of power and using them to manipulate the people they control/rule that this "Cho'Gall" is Deathwing/another black dragon merely impersonating him so they can use the forces of the twilights hammer to their advantage.

I'm still hoping against hope that Med'an will bite it gloriously before Cataclysm.

WHAT WHAT WHAT????
I WANT TO SEE HIM DIE RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY EYES, NOT BEFORE CATACLYSM!
Silly constellation!
Oreet May 16th 2010 3:33PM
better yet. i want to be the one to land the killing blow.
Moonkinmaniac May 16th 2010 9:08PM
Come on guys, he's part horde and part alliance so technically...both sides could join forces to smite him.
SaintStryfe May 16th 2010 11:26PM
No FARKING Way, we need an Airship battle do decide who guts the little Knaak-style Mary Sue.

If there was ever one time that I WANTED a lore character to go crazy so we could kill him for epic lewtz....
And I bet it's not going to happen =(

I avoided most of the article and all of the screenshots, but the very idea of the chain sounds pretty darned good.
MusedMoose May 16th 2010 3:20PM
Agreed - I play Alliance almost exclusively, so I read the quest text and hoped for an Alliance version. Hopefully we'll get some really interesting quests to lead into Cataclysm, and these have only been removed so Blizzard can perfect them, not so they won't ever show up.
I'd say something about being removed from the PTR only being a setback, but that would be silly.

Major lore figures (like Cho'gall) should die in-game, and not in comic books.
He better be a raid boss.
Moonkinmaniac May 17th 2010 12:54AM
His model was already posted on a certain site which was then taken down "quickly". So I'd bet he's a boss of some sort.

Ahn'Qiraj was merely a setback!

First, I love the post. I never got around to reading the comics, but I had most of the story via friends and wowwikki already :)
There are two things that immediately come to mind for how Cho'gal could return. One is the literal return of him.
As far as I've read, we really don't know the full extent of Cho'gal's transformation or what powers were granted to him. For all we know, the Old God could have given him the ability to regenerate (this would even make sense so the Old God could punish failures repeatedly for eternity). What happened to the scraps of Cho'gal after the fight with Med'an? Though I agree that there are a few too many "only a set back" in WoW these days....
Another possibility that has not yet occurred in WoW lore, but has happened in Earth History is that the name becomes a title. Allow me to explain: Cho'gal was the first leader of the Twilight's Hammer. Through the entire existence up to this point, he was the absolute leader of these mortals. As far as I know of, he was the first mortal to wish the complete destruction of Azeroth and the release of the Old Gods. It is conceivable that the combination of him being the first believer, the unquestioned leader for so long, his great zeal for the cause, and his further transformation by the Old God has made his name mean more than the ogre-mage he once was. It has grown to be the title for the leadership of the Twilight's Hammer.
In Earth history we see this happening. For example: Julius Caesar was the first emperor of Rome (technically he labeled himself as "dictator for life" and his heir, Augustus, was the first to take the title of Emperor; but my point is he was the first to rule above the power of the Senate). After that the line of Roman Emperors took the title "Caesar" when they took the position of rulership (some may claim this was a last name, but this is incorrect. Julius Caesar's family line was known as the Julian-Claudian line. Also emperors who were not descendants took the title "Caesar" as well.) This trend even extends to rulers of lands formerly part of the Roman Empire (for example: "Czar" from pre-revolution Russia and also "Kaiser" from the German Empires).
Another way to phrase it: "He's the next Cho'gal"
TL:DR He could have regenerated thanks to his Old God master, or the name "Cho'gal" could have evolved to become the title for the zealous and absolute (mortal) leader of the Twilight's Hammer forces.
