The Light and How to Swing It: Gearing a new holy paladin at 80, part 1

I feel like raiding in Wrath of the Lich King has started towards a slight lull in the past week or two. Many high-end guilds are stuck at 11/12 heroic kills in ICC, looking across the gaping chasm that is the Lich King fight on heroic, focusing on the few guilds who have managed to topple Arthas for good. I also find that most of the casual guilds have also settled into their niches, killing those Icecrown bosses that they have the time or raw numbers to defeat and being content with that. With only Ruby Sanctum to look forward to in terms of remaining raids and graduation season already started, I can already feel the post-expansion exodus ready to begin.
Guilds begin losing members faster than they can be replaced, and recruiting becomes a daily burden instead of a monthly chore. While all of this may sound like bad news, there is some hope in this transition period between the final tier of Wrath and the first tier of Cataclysm. Players will be using the free time to level alts, and I have already seen a deluge of newly minted toons appear in my guild this month. With any luck, there are future holy paladins in this mix, and in a few weeks' time, we'll have new brothers and sisters in arms. However, before they're truly ready to take up the mantle of keeping a tank alive through 3 stacks of Festergut's Inhaled Blight?, they're going to need some sweet gear to give them the throughput and longevity to pull it off.
The secret to gearing a holy paladin
I'm going to share with you my favorite trick when helping my friends and guildmates work on gearing their newly 80 holy paladins. You already have enough throughput. That's it. The scaling of Holy Light in a post-Blessing of Light world coupled with the ability of Beacon of Light to double our potency ensures that we'll never be caught without the HPS to keep our party alive. The spellpower that we pick up passively on all healing gear will be more than enough to boost our heals to an appropriate level. While other healers are forced to focus on mixing between regeneration and throughput, we're able to put all of our efforts into maximizing our mana pool. Due to the holy paladin love affair with intellect, we even have a super simple strategy for making sure we can chain-cast Holy Light for days.
Similarly to how tanks like advertise their total HP when trying to flaunt their skills, and how a PUG leader may only care about your GearScore, holy paladins are often weighted based on the sheer amount of mana we have in our pool. Because of spells like Divine Plea, Seal of Wisdom, and Replenishment, which all scale off of the total amount of mana we have, we can focus on stacking our intellect and letting Holy Light do all of the heavy lifting.
Where to start
The easiest way to start working on your holy paladin's gear is to start healing via the dungeon finder and simply picking up any spellpower gear that you find along the way. I recommend buying several Brilliant Autumn's Glow or Brilliant Sun Crystal gems and having them ready to put into any new gear that you acquire. While you might get lucky with a few chance drops in the random dungeons, I like to focus on the guaranteed gear that comes from the various factions' reputation awards and Emblems of Triumph. You should ensure you're friendly with every major Northrend faction, and that you wear their tabard while running dungeons. We'll be shooting for gear with haste on it first, which will allow us to decrease our Time Until Healed value. TUH is the key weakness of a holy paladin in a situation where multiple targets are taking damage, and so by trying to pick up haste gear first, we'll be able ensure that even the lowly rogues stay alive.
Argent Crusade
The first faction you'll want to work on is the Argent Crusade. Because the AC is very pro-paladin, they've got items of interest to a fledgling holy paladin at every single reputation level. Once you're honored, you'll be able to acquire the Standard Issue Legguards, which are very solid healing pants featuring both haste and a socket. While there is a mail helm you can acquire at revered, you're better off saving your gold until you're exalted and buying the Helm of Purified Thoughts. That's not all, though, the Argent Crusade vendor will also offer you a Signet of Hopeful Light, which means that there are actually two awesome epic items that you'll get for working for Tirion's crew.
Kirin Tor
Obviously, since the holy spec falls into the caster archetype, the two caster factions of the Kirin Tor and Wyrmrest Accord will be two of our favorite reputations to grind. At honored, they'll help us fill a very difficult cloak slot with the solid Shroud of Dedicated Research. At revered, they do have a nice belt, but again, we'll want to wait until exalted and pick up the Ghostflicker Waistband instead. However, as a perk for waiting for exalted, they'll also sell us the Robes of Crackling Flame, which are perfectly itemized for a newly 80 paladin.
Wyrmrest Accord
The Wyrmrest Accord should be the last faction you focus on, and by the time you're getting around to working your way to WA exalted, you may be getting into some of the higher level gear from triumph emblems. At honored, you'll be able to score some seriously sweet bracers, with a yellow socket that will match the intellect gem you'll want to put in there. Once revered, the vendor will sell you the perfect helm enchant for holy paladins: the Arcanum of Blissful Mending. If you have another toon that is already revered with WA, this item is Bind on Account, so feel free to just mail yourself one from your main. Sometimes luck may be against you, and if you haven't scored a decent healing weapon yet, the WA will sell you the Gavel of the Brewing Storm at revered, though chances are you'll have picked up a superior weapon before that. Finally, at exalted, you can buy the Grips of Fierce Pronouncements and the Sandals of Crimson Fury, adding two more epic items to your mix of starter healer gear.
Craftable gear and Bind on Equip items
I wouldn't worry too much about trying to have any gear crafted for you, unless there is a particular slot of yours which is very weak and you can't find anything to replace it. The same would go for any BoE items you may see on the auction house: I wouldn't bother spending any money on your gear unless you have the gold to spend or you see a simply amazing deal on a high level piece. There's no point in buying item level 200 gear when you could be replacing it in a day with a triumph emblem piece. Speaking of Emblems of Triumph, next week I will be covering part 2 of this guide to gearing your holy paladin, by going over all of the items you can buy with your emblems and what order you should buy them in to maximize your effectiveness as a healer.

I guess I find it interesting that you don't prioritize AH gear first, and badge gear second. For 1000g, you can get every BOE blue out there, gemmed and enchanted. For 2000g you can get all that plus the 2 piece ilvl 200 BS set, gemmed and enchanted. This alone is enough to do fine with heroics. For 1-2k more you can get the ilvl245 bracers, and make a start on your pre-raid set. From there, its just a matter of running dungeons.
I'd like to know if anyone actually prioritizes rep pieces. Sure if you have the rep, great; but at the end, they are just blues (exalted takes a while to grind). I have only used a couple of rep pieces as upgrades to my fresh 80.
WoWie Zowie May 16th 2010 5:16PM
he probably didn't put it there because he's assuming you are the first 80. After playing alliance for a few toons I created a horde alt. he didn't have the benefit of having a cash cow main. he did everything the hard way. and by the time he got to 80 he had about 3k gold and many items listed in the AH for some more. did the argent tournament dailies every day. which, btw, you might also want to list the argent tournament rep rewards as well for any new 80.
its hard getting that first epic flying cost out of the way. i wouldn't assume any fresh lonely 80s have gold to buy stuff in the AH. his suggestions for rep gear are spot on. while you're getting emblems and more gold, you'll automatically be getting rep. and the rep rewards are the best thing until you can get either some more gold or emblem gear.

This far into the expansion, you're better off using PvP Gear as starter gear.
Sky May 17th 2010 5:56AM
yea you should totally spend 1 - 2k g on the AH on gear that you would replace in 1 day. That's a good way to spend your money.
In all seriousness, just keep queueing the new heroics (icc and toc) and just freeload there. Save your gold for gems and enchants and just collect your welfare epics. Its annoying as heck when I get someone in greens join in my frost run but its really fun when I did it on my new 80. You could seriously get geared enough for ICC 10 in 1 week.
Rob May 17th 2010 8:37AM
Yeah i did assume people had some coin. I'm kinda amazed that so many do not have much money. I am gold capped and I don't spend more than a few hours a week making money.
Anyway, think of it this way. If you get the stuff from the AH or what not, enchant it, then you just replace it with a badge piece. If you are dps, assume 10 badges per hour. You can get the 5 T9 for 210 badges. So thats 4 hours per piece. When you start to do the math you realize that not giving an hour to work on specs, rotations, and a good set of BOEs is just silly. I guess others would rather be carried their whole lives.

What great timing! My new paladin just hit 80 a few days ago and while he's tanking main spec (and I put together a bunch of high-end crafted tanking gear for him to get him started) he's going to be holy offspec and I just started collecting heroic drops for his holy set last night.
This was a good read!

If you keep telling people there is a lull now there will be a lull now. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy. When a comment is repeated enough it becomes true. I think WoW Insider should be focusing on encouraging people to explore the full potential of the game and to try other games if they aren't having much fun in WoW. If you only play WoW to mindlessly grind for gear (which is now pointless with a new expansion coming) then I really think you are wasting your money on an addiction (to the thrill of incremental reward).
The game won't be significantly more fun in Cataclysm and I really doubt most players have done all the content currently in game (I haven't and I have been playing since launch). Live a little people. Don't spend so much time on this game that the instant they take away your purple e-crack you stop logging in.
Boobah May 16th 2010 9:30PM
Yes, because everyone's sheeple and surely past results mean nothing about how things are likely to go! And it's not as if quite a few members of the commentariat have ALSO mentioned that they're having trouble keeping their guildies (or themselves!) interested as Wrath starts feeling more and more like old news. Or work, take your pick.
/sarcasm off
Not talking about something doesn't stop it. People are still going to be caught up in the anticipation (and testing!) of Cataclysm. They're still going to be sick of yet another ICC or daily heroic run. They're still going to have more important things to do over the summer than WoW. If reading others mentioning these things helps someone realize they feel that way, too, then talking about it will help them choose an option that'll make them happier. That's a good thing.
mikzilla0 May 16th 2010 10:59PM
You tell people to get the "full potential of the game" and then also say that "gear grinding is a waste of time". The "full potential of the game" includes ICC. How is one supposed to get into ICC without at one time or another grinding for gear? "wait til the new expansion"? Why? Why not wait til the first three patches after Cataclysm is released?
You have to enjoy the game though. Enjoy the grinds. I know I do. It is repetitive but blissful. You say mindless, I say relaxing. It's relaxing to do a few easy heroic runs after running TOC, painful ICC runs, etc. So, I guess I agree that if you're not enjoying the game, don't play. But I don't agree that grinding is pointless.
theRaptor May 17th 2010 10:18AM
My point was that people should always play the game to have fun and not mindlessly grind gear because everyone else is grinding gear. There is a reason Blizzard are taking away the second raid id and that is because apparently large numbers of players feel compelled to grind so much the game loses its fun. Once upon a time you needed to grind from dungeon blues to tier 3 gear in a linear fashion, that is no longer the case.
Getting gear from raiding should be secondary to experiencing the fights and progressing as a guild.
Also past performance isn't a guarantee of future results. The BC lull was nothing like the classic lull (partly because the gear jump wasn't as massive, and it will be even less in Cata).
Hoggersbud May 16th 2010 6:27PM
I prefer the KT head glyph over the WA one. It's odd that it's not even mentioned though.
BlindSight May 16th 2010 8:47PM
Good thing about gearing a holy paladin is that unless a paladin is healing your group it's very unlikely that someone will roll on spellplate no matter what spec you are.
Noz. May 16th 2010 7:15PM
Hello.
This might sound weird, but, my Tankadin is close to dinging 80, and i would really like to have a guide like this one. Much Appreciated if you do a Prot guide after this Holy guide.
Thanks.
Noz.
Jamie May 16th 2010 7:55PM
Hey Noz, Chase only focuses on the Holy Paladin side of things.
Michael Grey did a few guides for lvling a paladin, not sure how much it covered lvl80 though.
ryang May 16th 2010 8:05PM
Honestly, for a fresh tank @ 80, you've made it harder for yourself if you haven't already been tanking, or at least building a tank set.
Run a couple of reg dungeons, or just queue up random heroics, as DPS - and ask the tank if you can roll on tank gear. This will help you get a decent set ASAP. Most people tanking heroics now are already geared enough to not need any loot.
But aside from that, the most important thing to do is get yourself defence capped. 535 defence for crit immune in heroics, 540 for raid bosses.
Rob May 16th 2010 8:36PM
Starting as a fresh tank is pretty painful due to the defense cap issue. You can get the BS tanking set, it will get you defense capped (barely). I would do a week of runs as dps or even heals and built up enough badges for some badge tank pieces, those are far better than the blue BS stuff.
Noz. May 16th 2010 9:38PM
The problem is, ive tried to read loot list and with all the changes, i dont know whats best with all the ToC5 and ICC5 gear. Nevertheless the BS gear, and everything, please Michael Grey then, do a Tankadin guide
Hal May 17th 2010 6:27AM
Some excellent resources for the new tank are Maintankadin.com and Tankspot.com. The latter not only has good resources for tanks, but also does excellent raid encounter movies.
Anyhow, I found this guide at tankspot.com:
http://www.tankspot.com/showthread.php?66111-Tankertots-Gear-your-Tank-in-LFD
It's discussed from the perspective of a Warrior tank, but the gear is pretty universal at that level.
Hal May 17th 2010 6:38AM
Oh, let me just point you back to their consolidated list of tank-gearing guides:
http://www.tankspot.com/showthread.php?47048-Beginner-Gear-Guides!
I used the Pre-Naxx gearing guide when I first turned 80; it's a different game now, but much of that is still good, at least before you use badge gear.
Sean May 17th 2010 8:20AM
I'm having the same problem gearing my new level 80 prot warrior....noone takes him seriously and just bashes his GS and either leaves or kicks me from the group..i don't even get a chance to tank.
I got about 21.5k HP and about the same Armour...i tried dpsing but then people complain why my dps is so low and why don't you know how to play my warrior...or why are you wearing tanking gear dpsing...my response usually is....(I never wield a 2handed weapon since i got rid of my axe at level 2 and since then i've been a tank." and usually get kicked from the group that way.
and my server either i'm not looking hard enough or Thorium brotherhood alliance side has no good guilds out there.
