It exists because the content is actually good, well written and free from the public masses whining. For example the current magazine includes:
-9 Page article on the quest creation process, how they work and what they have learnt
-16 page article on the dragons of WoW with family trees and a general whos-who
-Whats changing around the work in cataclysm
-Guide to pugs
-Guide to arena
-Lots of fold out glossy artwork
-10 page article on lore of the titans
-Guide for "for the alliance/for the horde"
-Complete ICC guide
-Guide to WSG
etc etc

If don't like the idea of it i guess you just don't, some people like having something they can have sat on their coffee table to flick through.
