I was under the impression that pinging the map also pinged it when you bring up the full map for the instance. Why not simply have raid leaders (people who by definition should know this stuff without addons doing it for them) ping the map as they talk (blizzard's default voice chat, vent, text) and the raiders view it with a full screen map to get positioning.
Of course, I'm also one of those people who believes if my raid leader actually studied a bit more, he could be calling out the same stuff as BigWigs and DBM when we need to know stuff is coming, mentally counting cooldowns on boss abilities, and we should be calling out when we have debuffs on us that require us to run around. Yeah, the addons have made us lazy, but AVR is really just a step too far when it draws safe zones for you. Heck, I still eyeball most ranges and if I mess up, I adjust accordingly. You really don't need big blue circles telling you what 10 yards is.
