Around Azeroth: A Mega mistake?
The AVR mod will soon be obsolete, and Kärgon of Daggerspine-H is apparently ... upset? Yes, let's just call this upset with Blizzard's actions. He used his Engineering skills to build a humanoid robot and ordered this Mega Man to protect the treasured mod at all cost. Unfortunately, a poorly timed experimental spell from Krasus turned this new creation into a two-dimensonal rendering that appears almost ... pixellated.
Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see them on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as emailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word "Azeroth" in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use Alt Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, Val'kyr on mounts or pictures of the Ninja Turtles in Dalaran. Older screenshots can be found here.

I haven't used AVR, and I'm surprised that it was even possible to create, seeing how Blizzard has always had a "addons can't affect the real world" policy.
I haven't used it because, from the description I read of it when it was featured on mmo-champ a while back, it seems to simplify the game in a way I can't really put into words. I probably shouldn't be casting aspersions on something I've never used, but it didn't really appeal to me.
I'm starting to have second thoughts on it since seeing the cuteness of Megaman here, though.

It only creates an illusion of effecting the world.
The addon guesses at how the image will look on the landscape, and takes your flat image, and warps and bends it based on the addon's guess, to make it look like it's actually drawn on the game world.
That's why the images tend to bug if your camera get's stuck on a wall or something, and won't be lying where you drew them. It's not actually on the ground, only an illusion of it. And when your camera gets stuck, the illusion is destroyed.

If you've ever used photoshop, and played with the perspective tool, it's basically the same thing, just a slightly more complex version that automatically does the math for you.
Here's a simple example that I threw together in 30 seconds in photoshop. It's a flat image, just stretched to look like it is not flat.

Personally I find the addon very fascinating. Before it's taken down, I really need to download a copy and look at it's code and see the math he used in the addon.

Thanks for the information (and the purdy diagram). It's quite a simple idea, really. So simple, infact, that I'm surprised it took so long for an addon like this to surface. I'm guessing it's taking advantage of a more recent change in the allowances for scripts?
Hoggersbud May 22nd 2010 12:28PM
Yeah, it's only possibly because it uses math to guess what's going on and where to put things.
As to why it took so long, well, there might have been some API changes, or maybe folks just realized that its purpose was against Blizzard's intent and never thought about doing it.

Cause Azeroth is definitely the real world.
But yeah, never used AVR myself, never needed to. But, Im sure a lot of people are upset.

After reading about this addon here, i figured i'd try it out to see what all the hubbub was about. Yeeeeaaaahhhhh it's MSpaint, that attempts to translate something into 3d, and it doesnt even do it well.
The image IS part of your HUD, you can tell in 5 man groups because the images dont exactly styay where you put them. I honestly dont know how Blizz could have such a cow over this addon. It's easily less "game breaking" than DBM or Deus Vox.
Hoggersbud May 22nd 2010 9:34PM
Let me guess...you didn't use it with the AVRE addon, did you?
See some examples of it being used in raids.

Dr. Lichy and the eight Undead Masters:
Kel'thu Man
Anub Man
Saur Man
Putri Man
Blood Woman
Sindra Woman
Yogg Man and Tirion Man were part of the crew, but they highly disagreed with the "Undead" part.
Dreamstorm May 22nd 2010 10:16AM
Tirion? You mean Bolvar?
thegatherer May 22nd 2010 12:36PM
Nope, and actually, Tirion is the real name of Pally man. The reason Pally man and Yogg man are opposed to the LK, is because they will have nothing to do with refurbished machines or Robot Masters.
Kurash May 22nd 2010 4:39PM
I think it'd be Dr. Yogg as a rival mad scientist, actually. Except instead of making his own robot minions he just brainwashes already-built ones!
Ice Man (Calling Hodir "Ho Man" implies a whole different power)
Lighting Man
Plant Girl (Eco Girl?)
Robo Man
"Keepers" nothing! They're just repossessed Mega Man bosses!
Feanora May 22nd 2010 10:24AM
"You could have been my greatest champion, Fordring." repeated every single time you clear the first trash pack.
Bolvar's more like Proto Man. And I have no clue if he's undead, alive, or unalive.
CaryEverett May 22nd 2010 10:29AM
Does that make Saurfang Bass?
thegatherer May 22nd 2010 12:39PM
What is it with these dern new fangled Mega Man characters?!
In my day, you had to walk up hill both ways, in the snow, with wild robotic dogs chasing you.
The only good characters are Mega Man, Roll, Rush, and the Robot Masters!!!!!
Dookieshed May 22nd 2010 11:06AM
HELL YEAH MEGA MAN FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kargon May 22nd 2010 1:31PM
Sweet, thanks for sharing my masterpiece with everyone.

Its better than drawings of penises. Thats all I normally see AVR used for.
Vodkamartini May 22nd 2010 1:59PM
I haven't played Mega Man in 20 years. Does he still do the goofy jump stance (one arm in the sky, one legged hop with his mouth wide open) in the new games, because that's how I best remember him. (Heck, there's T-shirts of that pose).
And the blink. That creepy f'ing blink.
