Cataclysm screenshot of the day
Though it was oddly missing over the weekend, Blizzard's Cataclysm screenshot of the day feature makes a comeback today with a shot of the Blackrock Caverns, one of the new 5-man dungeons. They've also added the screenshots that were missing over the weekend, which are mostly new angles of areas we've seen previously, Hyjal among them.
If you want to see those screenshots or a hi-rez version of the one above, check out the gallery below.

I believe it was the 20th century songsmiths Erasure who said it best:
"Come to me, cover, hold me
Together we'll break these chains of love
Don't give up, don't give up
Together with me and my baby
Break the chains of love"
Or some such.

FMY=EOFMY=F?
Sorry just trying to read that gibberish written above the door over there.

omggg this is getting annoying. I dont want the same picture different angles anymore. Blizzard stop cheaping out with the screenshots. the hyjal cottage thing really made me mad. and the blackrock cavern one is practically the same too. *sigh*

It's obviously Dwarven Runes. They don't have any real meaning.

They are showing the same damn screen shot with different angles trying to drive the hype.
Wanna know the main thing that drives MMO's and expansions? The hype of being in a Beta test for a game people know is awesome/the best/their favorite. They show the changes BARELY, and drive up the hype by going "Man! I'll bet you wish you were in the beta to see all this yourself, don't you!"
The entire gaming industry is driven by hype before the launch and during the initial phase, which is soon followed by the second quarter, which will always be about additions of content or updates (think map packs, quests, dungeons, etc.) in which case, they re-hype (PTR, interviews, previews, etc.).
That is the business point of the video game industry...And i am completely fine with it. I ENJOY hearing about a person's opinion, taking what i can from it, Then either hearing another person's or checking it out for myself. And you know what? It makes alot of sense from the business side AND the "player" side. The suits drive up the amount of people who want to pre-order and buy it, and the players who participated/tried/have the game tell others about it via word of mouth, which is ultimately the best selling point, because no matter who you are, you know you have at least 3-5 people who are highly influenced in the stuff they by from what you or someone else says or suggests.

At least we're getting screenshots, eh? While 5 or 6 different shots all of the same general part of Hyjal may seem kind of lame (don't forget the feeling of "neat!" when the first Hyjal shot came out), it's better than nothing. It's meant to build hype and be a teaser, not give away huge chunks of content like the alpha leak did.
Just remember that not everyone checks this every night, so just cause you've seen a similar shot doesn't mean everyone has.

I could go take that screen shot in BRD right now. I think they're picking bad ones in retaliation for the leaks.

Lol...Blizzard

That's how I've felt about several of their screenshots. A lot of them look like they were taken in Coilfang Reservoir.
Moonkinmaniac May 24th 2010 11:21PM
The female Worgen is hardly done, maybe they simply don't have anything finished enough to show that would be impressive. Either that or everything seems lame after how interesting the leaks were.

Can't wait for Cata.

I can't help but feel that the people going "omg the screenshots are so lame compared to the leaks" are tasting a bit of karmic justice. I didn't look at the leaks, and as a result the screenshots look pretty cool to me. I'm looking forward to killing twilight cultists in Blackrock Caverns.

The leaked screenshots were great to get a broad outline of the layout of the new instances and the new and changed zones, but that's about as far as you could take it (though I definitely let out a "wow" when looking at a couple of them). The leaked shots gave you a feel for the zones that you won't get from a Blizz shot.
However, the leaked shots obviously didn't have any characters or smaller props in them, just terrain, trees, and rocks (most of them). They also weren't shot to be "cool-looking" or "aesthetically pleasing" like the Blizz screenshots are (think family versus professional photographer), so in a way we're both missing out on a "woah cool" factor.
Portals May 25th 2010 12:41AM
It's only "not cool" because all of you lack artistic vision. And obviously will be in denial of that fact. Don't argue with me on this....you're in denial, just accept it. >.o

I have to wonder why the new pics on the Cat SSotD page on the official site were dead links all weekend. Do they not have some guy they can give a bit of overtime who can just properly link the pages each day? It defeats the point of putting up new pics on the weekend if the images are broken until they get fixed on Monday. I feel like this has happened on previous weekends too.

Not in today's but what would have been yesterday's photo, it shows a lot of dragonkin and those mage/locks with the chains. But to the left is a huge figure that appears to be patting around.
What is that? Is that a boss for this area? Is that a new model?
nemo96 May 25th 2010 6:33AM
Someone ain't proud of the Twilight's hammer...
Camaris May 25th 2010 7:26AM
The sure love their underwater doors.
bmiller May 25th 2010 7:45AM
It's nice to see the chains actually be 3 dimensional objects instead of 2D planes stacked perpendicularly to each other

I don't mind the screenshots that WoW.com is showing us. They are there to remind us of what's coming, not spoil everything. It's still a while before Cata comes out.
I thought that Blackrock Depths (and its sister, Blackrock Spires) were two of the most fun and involved dungeons in Classic WoW, hopefully Blackrock Caverns will deliver more of the same. (Admittedly I liked how Dungeon Finder split BRD into different sections, though.)
