For a new 80 Paladin, if your gearscore is under 3k, then get a blacksmith to make you the savage/ornate/tempered saronite battlegear set, scarlet signet and emerald choker (runed mana band/sky sapphire amulet for healers). You should end up around 3200 and be ready to run heroics for the pieces above.
