Mrghlllghh! Real-life murlocs?

According to National Geographic, the handfish are no new discovery on Earth, but a recent scientific review evaluating the known populations of the fish have identified nine new species. The new species were determined on a number of traits, such as the number of vertebrae and fin rays, coloration and more.
Like murlocs, handfish are a scientific mystery in terms of behavior and biology, but unlike murlocs, this is due to their low population and small geographic occurrence. They are considered critically endangered, something Azeroth's adventurers only wish they could say about murlocs.
As many of our tipsters have pointed out, the handfish certainly do resemble WoW murlocs in a way, especially when you look at all the color varieties. I wonder what kind of sounds they make or if they can hold anything with those little hands? You know, like little sharpened spears? Perhaps Ghostcrawler, marine expert that he is, has some thoughts on how capable these little guys are or at least some insight on any connections that might exist between them and the murlocs of Azeroth.
Check out our murloc gallery and let us know what you think!

Our only defense is to take up arms, immediately.

NOW: they are a endangered species that's unknown to scientists
TOMORROW: they will settle in our beaches and make their tiny huts.
DAY AFTER TOMORROW : they take over the white house
WE SALUTE YOU PRESIDENT MURLOC!!

They say they come in peace! They say they just need to repair their ships, and then they'll be on their way!
But you can't believe them! You CAN'T! I SEE THROUGH THEIR LIES!!!

Due to them being aussies they won't be happy till they get a cool Fosters, well... they wouldn't want a warm beer.
That's what the hands are for I'd imagine.
NRD80Y May 27th 2010 7:01PM
@Jamie - FYI no Aussies drink Fosters anymore (not since the 80s, and I don't even think you could find it any Pub). VB, XXXX, Tooheys New or Melbourne Bitter are the standard Aussie bogan drink for the past few decades.
Fair shake ov the ol sauce bottle!
tonedeff May 27th 2010 7:36PM
Yet to see a Aussie drink a Fosters. Here in Melbourne there would lucky to be 2 bottle shops (out of the 1000s) that stock the stuff!
Carlton FTW!

I had VB when I was visiting Australia. Great stuff. Sadly, just like with the always incredible Kilkenny, it is unavailable in the U.S. We're not allowed to import the good beers. =( I assume it's to protect all the US beer companies from immediately going out of business.

What gets me is that humans (and others) will willingly *eat* murlocs - murloc eyes in westfall stew, murloc fin soup in the wetlands - despite the fact that they possess language (you can learn it up in Northrend), religion (there's a quest to collect murloc idols in Bloodmyst Isle, and there are murloc oracles everywhere), and complex tool use (those huts of theirs, spears, tridents, and whatnot). The human quests in Elwynn, and the Explorer's League quests in Bloodmyst, claim that murlocs are sub-sentient, animalistic creatures ... despite the evidence to the contrary. Murlocs can probably out-think an orc (or Garrosh, at least!) so why do the peoples of Azeroth look down on them so? Gnolls or ogres are equally destructive and violent, but nobody accuses *them* of being barely sentient.

mrghlmrghl??

Humans and others will also willingly wear the leathery skin of Worgen and sentient animal avatars from ZG. Azeroth is a brutal place, where survival and death are next door neighbors.
Fletcher May 28th 2010 3:15AM
That's true - dragonkin are skinnable, murlocs drop shiny fish scales or whatever they are that are used in leatherworking, and worgen are skinnable. I wonder if player worgen will be skinnable? It'll be a strange day when Horde leatherworkers hit the BGs to farm mats.
Zidri May 28th 2010 5:26AM
Very doubtfull, Taurens arent skinnable either.
Artificial May 28th 2010 5:46AM
Well, why not? Remember, in a fantasy world, you can even talk to the trees (and frequently do, indeed most of the trees I've spoken to on Azeroth seemed smarter than the murlocs, or even orcs, indeed seem nearly as wise as the elves themselves). Does it bother the vegetarians that they're killing and eating living beings who they can communicate with if they try? The main reason not to eat a murloc is that they taste fishy. How smart they are just don't enter into it. I know, I know, they do it in Westfall, but Westfall cuisine is largely based on past dares...

Murlocs taste good, Ogres and Gnolls dun't.
Lets be honest, on Azeroth, humans would be considered a subsentient race if they tasted good. Tauren regularly inject themselves with poisonous substances and Blood Elves won't let anyone sniff near them incase they realise how good they taste.
Plus, look at gnomes. The few people who have (knowingly) tried them claim, quite regularly, that they are a vile, evil, subsentient race, just to justify them as food.
