Phat Loot Phriday: Girdle of Eternal Memory

This weekend is America's Memorial Day. It is a day during which we remember and pay homage to the men and women of America's fighting forces who gave their lives in service to our country. I often feel like many people pay lip service to the phrase, "Thank you for your service to our country," and just kind of nod to Memorial Day as they fire up the BBQ. Years ago, however, I had the honor of attending a good man's funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. He'd served in Korea; he never talked about it, but we all knew it. I had nothing but respect and admiration for the man. As I stood in Arlington while he was being set to rest among his peers and fellows, I was struck by the raw history and impact of that place. It's never left me. There are heroes, and they deserve our respect and memory.
For all the meaningless nod that it is, then, today's Phat Loot Phriday is the Girdle of Eternal Memory. This is the reward you receive after returning Crusader Bridenbrad's Tabard to Tirion Fordring. When Tirion hears about Bridenbard's sacrifice and his ultimate fate, he says the words I hope we all remember as we begin this Memorial Day weekend:
"We shall take heart in his shining example and in your selflessness. Thank you for all that you have done."

Not to be a downer, but it's not "America's" memorial day. It's the United States memorial day. There are a lot of other countries in both of the American continents . . .

Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas
"In many parts of the world, America in the singular is commonly used as a name for the United States of America; however, (the) Americas (plural with s and generally with the definite article) invariably refers to the lands and regions of the Western hemisphere."
The article didn't say "the Americas", nor was it talking about a holiday for anywhere else.

As a United States citizen that grew up in various countries of Latin America, I can understand this opinion and where it's coming from. Let me say this, however: you do not have claim to the word "America" in the same sense that we do. When we say, "God bless America," we mean it in the sense that others would say, "Viva Mexico," or "Aguante Argentina." It's not political semantics for us but national pride and patriotism. We're not rubbing it in anyone's face, "America" is just what we have come to call our nation. And we love our country - you must identify with that sentiment, at least to some extent. So if you own country is at all dear to you, please just bear with our idiomatic inaccuracies, and stand in respectful silence as we honor our warriors this weekend.

I had the same argument with a friend some time ago, you guys call yourself "Americans" not for thinking that you own the entire continent but because it's in the name of your country, my country once was named "united states of Colombia" roughly translated, what do we should call ourselves? colombians or unitedstatians? (or something like that :P) I feel it's the same thing, the first part it's the description of some sort of social/political organization, today my country is called Republic of Colombia, and we don't call ourselves "republicans", just "colombians" it all relates to a boring "rawrrr americans think they own the world rawrrrr" *flag burning than something else.

Thank you for this post. WoW gave me the opportunity to not only meet a wonderful person, but he was also a member of the United States military. He passed away last fall, and even though I never got to meet him in person, he will be one of the many I pay my respects to on this holiday.
My prayers and love go out to the memory of Timothy G. Bowman(Abbu in WoW) and his family, as well as to anyone who has lost someone of uniform, whether they be family, or simply guildmates whom you've never met, but will always remember.

Yeah, that's a great example of remembering the sacrifice of others. No one should forget the sacrifices that people have made for us. People should take time EACH day and remember those who gave their lives in service to their country, no matter WHAT country they are from.

Something to listen to, both for the end of that quest and the day in general.

More topical and less geeky (though that is a very nice song)

'American Anthem' by Norah Jones, from the wonderful Ken Burns documentary 'The War'. Made me cry then, makes me cry now. Longer, full version of the song at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdjnAFqapg4

well done, mr. gray. as a Soldier, veteran, and one who has personally experienced the loss of several battle buddies, this means more than i can say. kudos to you and wow.com for highlighting the reality behind what so many Americans take for granted as a long weekend and excuse for a BBQ.

You made a former military brat tear up.
/salute to you and everyone else who have worn our country's uniform, regardless of branch of service. We wouldn't be here if it weren't for you.

Very thoughtful post. It's good to be reminded we have the life we do thanks to those who laid theirs down. We're not a perfect country, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
