Breakfast Topic: Fear ... so exhilarating

Enter WoW.
Now, I realize it's just a game, but keep in mind that I'm the person who nearly cried the first time I saw The Grudge because I was so terrified. There have been more than a few instances where I've been creeped out (gigantic spiders, anyone?), but the one part of the game that actually made me uncomfortably frightened is going into Hrothgar's Landing, due north of the Argent Tournament Grounds. It's got everything I hate: lessened visibility, the feeling of claustrophobia (from the mists) and very deep and dark waters. It actually got to a point where I would abandon those dailies unless someone was with me, as I would just get too nervous to do them.
Have there been any times when you have been genuinely scared in game? Does the Scourge make your skin crawl? Do Nerubians make your blood run cold? Or are you just afraid of the dark?

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

Pfft, why can't my IRL friends understand the significance of quotes like this?
Epic response btw, looks like you got that comment up about 10 and 1/2 hours before this post existed. Are you perhaps prescient?
Aureliusz May 29th 2010 8:18AM
Wait. Carry the one, cancel the four...
My amathretics is wonky. Should be more like 21 and 1/2 hours. (Silly AM and PM.)

THe Litany Against Fear should be part of the mental toolset of every thinking being.

Our raidleader taught us that the only thing we should be afraid of is him.

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.
It is by the juice of sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning.
It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

Aureliusz asked...
"Are you perhaps prescient?"
You cannot possibly understand what it is to be prescient, therefor any answer I give would be meaningless. The golden path lies ahead, this I am sure of.

This is close to if not my favorite quote of all time, and you managed to be the first reply.
Epic win.

Fear is what it's all about.
You cannot sell while undergoing fear.
You need to VANQUISH fear.
One must wrestle fear to the ground.
You will now wrestle my cousin Mose!

I've been debating the pros and cons of getting this as a tattoo on my forearm.
Cons: a little too long.
Pros: only i will remain.

Oh god yes, the way they just stand still staring into nowhere... *Shudder*
I think the most afraid I've ever gotten was leveling in Outland at the last few levels before Northrend. I made an ally alt to see what the other side was like, and it was on a low-pop server with more Horde than alliance. When I leveled my main through Outland the first time (in TBC) it was all beautiful and wondrous, but this time I was creeped out. As soon as I got to like 65 or 66 I begun to see less and less people. Everywhere I went it was a ghost town. By the time I got to 67 I was absolutely terrified, I hadn't seen another soul in ages. Everything was eerily quiet and empty. Add the fact that I didn't know anyone on that server made it even more scary. Nobody to talk to in the distant broken world. I made my way to Northrend as fast as I could when I reached 68. Never been so happy to leave Outland, lol.

I think you're correct about Outland. The whole thing is an almost cliched descent into existential horror. Things start happily enough in the sun drenched hills of Hellfire. There's a constant stream of people coming and going from Thrallmar, someone's always around to give you a hand with Cruel's Intentions, and there's the occasional last second escape from the Fel Reaver to give that Action-Movie-With-A-Happy-Ending feel to the whole place.
But eventually you have to move on and the world starts feeling emptier and emptier. Even the cheerful vistas of Nagrand aren't enough to shake the feeling of encroaching doom, though the Ring of Blood offers a brief respite from loneliness when you can find enough fellow souls to band together one last time.
But, without fail, the sun sets those green floating hills and you fall through the shadows into the bleak wastelands of Netherstorm where nothing living can ever be found. The madness grows and grows until you find yourself having long conversations with your new soulmate: the silent shade of Archmage Vargoth. At least he always laughs at your jokes when he's not quietly urging you to kill, kill them all.

Falling from a great height always freaks me out and gives me vertigo!
Arodiel May 29th 2010 8:09AM
Same! It makes my stomach lurch, even tho I'm not physically falling
Suite May 29th 2010 8:15AM
I get this too.
Whenever I do the Algalon encounter I have to close my eyes too, when the stars rush in, because it makes my stomach lurch and gives me mad vertigo.
Aureliusz May 29th 2010 8:16AM
Personally, I love falling from those heights! That's why I wish I had a druid so I could hit flight form before I land. Or a Mage so I could hit slow fall. Hmm, trying to time a Blink perfectly to avoid damage would be the most awesome form of Russian roulette.
I guess I'll just have to stick to my Shaman and his once-only trick.
