Breakfast Topic: Your city is under attack

While testing out the new toy I acquired this weekend, it came to my attention via large, unfriendly amounts of local defense spam that Orgrimmar was under attack. What better way to break in a legendary? So I went to go defend the city and ended up chasing the Alliance around Orgrimmar, Silvermoon City and Thunder Bluff with my sword wildly swinging in a graphically impressive yet largely ineffective fashion. But despite the efforts of myself and about 20 other people who were more than okay with defending dear Cairne from bloodthirsty Alliance attacks, there were an even larger number of people in trade chat who didn't really seem to care one way or another. "Why bother?" "It doesn't matter; they'll respawn in a few hours anyway ..." These common refrains echoed from trade and made a mockery of those of us who chose to stand and fight.
City battles are often some of the most fun PvP I've encountered -- sure, it's not a battleground, there are no quests involved and it could be argued that there's no real "advantage" to winning. But there's something ridiculously entertaining about simply going back and forth, trading blows with the other faction. It's vaguely reminiscent of the times before battlegrounds existed, when PvP dominance was established in hours-long battles between Southshore and Tarren Mill. Plus, we're fighting to defend one of the major lore figures in World of Warcraft's history, and there's something satisfying about that as well. And don't forget the achievements!
So what do you think, Breakfast Topic readers? When you see the local defense channel light up, do you stand at attention and rush to defend your city leaders, or do you simply turn the other cheek? Do you enjoy raiding cities and fighting off not only players of the opposite faction, but tons of guard spam? Why do you think people simply don't want to bother with it anymore?

Agreed, also we have found the reason of Thrall's inner peace....a plethora of bunnies!

Jefe: What is a plethora?
Jefe: Why, El Guapo?
El Guapo: Well, you told me I have a plethora. And I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has *no idea* what it means to have a plethora.
Jefe: Forgive me, El Guapo. I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education. But could it be that once again, you are angry at something else, and are looking to take it out on me?

The first few times, I rushed to defend my city. After that...repetition got boring eventually.

Perhaps, but I do love world PvP, it is so much more satisfying! The big difference with your daily battleground and arena is 'pride'. When you lose in world PvP, you feel butt-hurt and humiliated.

Honestly every time I try to defend things are unorganized but most of all the lag just kills things (or kills me).

I can haz edit button too...? :'-(
Dawn Moore Jun 1st 2010 8:17AM
Our edit button is super lame, honestly. We have to log into our publishing web app to edit it, and even when doing that, we have to be careful to not damage the html code. Very lame.
The commenting system we use here at WoW.com is high on the list of things the big wig editors want to fix. Maybe one day we'll all get something easier. =)

WTB edit b- WAIT WHAT?! We might actually GET an edit button?
Like Blizz finally gave us sparkle-ponies?!
PS: Nice hijacking the topic of this article Dawn ;)

For the Horde! For Thrall!
I love it when Alliance attack the capital cities and towns, I usually always rush over if I'm not in the middle of something (except for Lor'themar, I just let him die and /clap at all the Alliance).
Parajoe Jun 1st 2010 9:58AM
The Alliance probably have their picks, but I agree we only have 3 major cities. I was in Org. hearing about the 40 or so ally hitting UC. I started asking if we had a def. raid in /1 chat. 3 whispers came to me saying invite.
So I do and convert to RAID. Just us four... "Need more Def raid ORG - ALLY at the back gates NOW" - Just us 6?... Thrall goes down :(
Now i have 25! /RW --- "OK UC,ORG down Mage portal in thralls room to TB, meet at Cairne!" "OK everyone buff up" We wait patiently while the finish SM.
-----THUNDERBLUFF IS UNDER ATTACK____
Right there in front of Cairne, we slaughter all 40 alliance. and start to look around in awe...a silence - Did we actually stop them at TB. The one that they left over as a gimme?
we all waited another 30 min. heck WG was starting soon. But we stopped them cold that day! :)
Thyago Jun 1st 2010 10:09AM
There is not ONE time I won't stand to defend Stormwind or Ironforge (the others I rarely visit, never saw being attacked). Heck, my guilds will have to wait some 5 mins on the raiding, but there will be no bloodlust monsters in our cities! FOR THE ALLIANCE!
Ralasorux Jun 1st 2010 8:13AM
If you're on a pvp server and you don't raid/defend cities/towns you need to gtfo and go back to lame pve servers.
Dreamstorm Jun 1st 2010 8:15AM
Cool story, bro. Did I miss the memo?
Nighthavk Jun 1st 2010 8:21AM
@Dreamstorm: Yes, you did. It was the 'PvP Realm' bit you accidentally chose when making your char. It should've been PvE.
If you don't bother with city raids / defend your city, I don't see why you'd pick PvP realm, now that the only other PvP action is being ganked when leveling up?
