MMO Roundup: Last week on Massively

If you cheat in Guild Wars, the death god will kill you Guild Wars players hanging out in Heroes' Ascent recently noticed an interesting sight. Dhuum (the former god of death) in all his giant shiny glory was popping in and out of different districts, banning people with a swing of his scythe. ArenaNet announced recently that they have banned over 3,700 accounts and disbanded over a dozen guilds in Guild Wars for botting and match manipulation.

Symantec analyzes cache of stolen accounts Symantec recently discovered and analyzed a massive cache of stolen gaming accounts. Massive, in this case, equals around 44 million accounts from game publishers including Blizzard, NCsoft and Wayi Entertainment.

Complement your Star Wars: The Old Republic character with companions What would Han be without Chewie, Luke without R2-D2, Robin Hood without Little John, or Hall without Oates? Pretty boring, if you ask BioWare. This is the key reason for adding companion characters to Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Massively interviews the Guild Wars 2 design team There has been so much new information about Guild Wars 2 lately that it can be a little hard to keep up. While things have mostly focused around dynamic events and personal story, the scope of those two concepts is so large that every new piece of news seemed to trigger another list of questions. We at Massively have been following the developments closely, so we are as curious as anyone else. We asked the Guild Wars 2 team about several various points -- everything from crafting to the creation timeline.

EverQuest II nerfs Qeynos and Freeport as starting zones Lost amid the lengthy patch notes for EverQuest II's recent Halas Reborn update is a curious decision by the developers at Sony Online Entertainment. The game's two traditional starting locations, the Isle of Refuge and the Outpost of the Overlord (which feed into the capital cities of Qeynos and Freeport, respectively), have been removed as choices at character creation.

More iPhone apps for your favorite MMOs As much as we love our MMOs, keeping track of our characters, maps, ingredients, friends and everything else can't always be juggled while online. And often we want to keep track of in-game activities and friends while offline. As a result, many iPhone apps have sprung up, official and unofficial, to help you stay in the game.

I would love to see that in WoW. You're sitting in Stormwind, trying to drown out the gold sellers and ignore the ones who killed themselves into a website name. Suddenly, a Naaru descends from the sky and zaps half a dozen players into oblivion.
. . . I'd enjoy it, anyhow. But then, given their ability to skirt around the banhammer, it would look like an Azerothian version of fighting the hydra.

So, what MMO has witch doctor monkeys? Because I think I might need to try that one out.

As an old Guild Wars player, Dhuum (old God of Death) is *okay*... it would be nice if Grenth killed those players, since he is the God of Death.

I like the Old Republic and Bioware staying with the use of companions in the game to some extent but I worry about the whole "affection system" they discuss to make these companions adjust more to you and your play style. It's always been my experience that they give you a character storyline that says you are "disowned/disavowed/lost/missing/hurt by others and when you respond to violence against a person, be they a slave, child, or other person your character could possibly relate too with violence your companions tend to frown instead of having the ability to understand your background and why you would vehemently lash out and instigators that remind you of your own past and feel sorrow for you instead.
I just don't think software and programming can truly adapt to the true nature of a situation that a being with real emotion could.

I meant lash out AT instigators.

Or to that first sentence.
