Patch 3.3.5: Changes to vote kick incoming
Zarhym hit the forums earlier this evening to announce a change coming to the dungeon finder in the upcoming Patch 3.3.5. For those who behave themselves, the cooldown for starting a vote to kick a player from your party will be removed. For those who kick players out of those parties more frequently, the cooldown will remain. The quote:
ZarhymWe have found that most players using the Dungeon Finder don't use the Vote Kick feature or abandon groups very often. For these players, we are removing the cooldown on voting to kick players from a dungeon party. In contrast, those players who tend to kick players or abandon groups more frequently will notice that the Vote Kick feature maintains its cooldown. The goal here is to make sure players who are generally patient can make use of the Vote Kick feature when they really need it, without giving a more powerful tool to those who try to kick others or abandon dungeon groups very frequently.
This functionality will adjust itself as a player's behavior while using the Dungeon Finder changes.

You might remember that they started tracking this sort of information as of patch 3.3.3. They have been tracking the number of times you kick, the number of times you are kicked, how often you've abandoned a party and a few other things. While this change is a new one, they have been collecting the data for some time. There's a Santa Claus is Coming to Town parody somewhere in here, but I'm not musical enough to pull it off. Help us out?

Ironically, judging from the last "Daily Blues" Bornakk may be among those being stung by this. It's a little disheartening when one of the people behind-the-scenes talks about dropping LFD groups because "I'm not here to completely waste my time for people who are super behind in gear and hopefully they understand that". :( One would like to think he'd be interested in refining (if possible) a flaw in the tool that players have been pointing out for months rather than grousing about it.

I have to agree with you, TR. I feel badly saying it, because I like Bornakk. But, when I read his comment about that, I was actually a bit shocked and surprised. I guess it's easy to put the blues on a pedestal, but when it really comes down to it, they're just people like everyone else.
I could never bring myself to kick someone for their performance, if I know they're genuinely trying. And, I would never desert a group based on someone doing a poor job, either. I will stick it out, regardless of how long it takes. Because, I know that the person who's not doing so well probably already feels embarrassed and mad with themselves. I would rather lift them up, than bring them down. The only time I'd ever desert a group is if I had to, due to a real life issue or because my internet dies or I get dced.

About time. I don't vote kick often, but I was taking my resto druid through Nexus the other night with a newer Tank who hadn't been there before, who had a tagalong DPS (her husband) who was also learning the joint. So they were going slow and methodically. Fine with me; I'm in no rush, and tanks gotta learn the instance somehow too. The second DPS was also in their guild, so he understood things, but the third DPS (elemental shammy?) was all GO GO GO and pulling when the tank wasn't ready yet, and making life miserable. 15 minutes means we couldn't kick him until after Telestra. And then the tank accidentally picked up the patrol _and_ the fixed group just around the corner from her. Dude ragedropped right then and there and saved us the trouble, but it would have been nice to have been able to punt him as soon as he turned on the attitude.
When I'm on my DPS character, I know that I can be replaced in a flat second so I don't worry if something comes up and I have to run, but man do I hate dropping when I'm healing.

Honestly the only people I've really wanted to kick have been hotshot tanks. I don't care if they're new tanks; I don't even care if they're bad tanks--but I can't stand a tank who is running before I even zone in, doesn't give me a chance to buff, barely gives anybody a breather for mana, and acts like ms. diva because his/her queue times are shorter than dps. Even healers, who have similarly short queue times, don't act as entitled or uppity.
I'd also like to vote kick everybody who responds to a simple "hello" with 'sup', just cuz it annoys me and makes them look like a fool.
I'll repeat what I've said before about the lfd tool: it's either the worst thing or the best thing to happen to WoW in a while. Some days I'm inclined to think it's the worst.
JoeRandom Jun 2nd 2010 1:01AM
what's wrong with 'sup'?
MrJackSauce Jun 2nd 2010 1:16AM
You know 'sup' is a form of greeting in New Zealand. It means "what is up" as in, ow are you and what have you done in the past short while. You saying hello means nothing except to let everyone know that you're here and you want them to reply back :)
MrJackSauce Jun 2nd 2010 1:17AM
er.. that's "how are you" not "ow are you"
Teron Jun 2nd 2010 1:25AM
Trust me, there are plenty of healers who are incredibly rude and irritating, maybe even more than dps, sad to say. But as for the running before you're zoned in, no buffing, and no waiting for mana stuff, I'll agree with you that those kinds of tanks are a pain. But the mr diva thing does seem to happen to tanks more than the others. I'll admit that I've had it happen to me. It's something about being in a position to save the group the most that makes it so, and it's not something that a lot of tanks will notice, although those that do try to catch themselves, since the smarter ones realize it's still a team, and they can be replaced.
As for the replying to "sup" and such.... what exactly is your issue here? Seriously, I don't get the problem. It's just an expression, and it's far less annoying than some that have become common.
As for your question of if LFD is good or not, I'm almost leaning towards no, due to the you can't earn friends with it unless you're really lucky, and for whatever reason I almost never get paired with people from my server. (Wyrmrest Accord)
lolikitty Jun 2nd 2010 4:58AM
I like 'sup, actually, i imagine the person is relaxed and friendly, but that's just me.
Hiwa Jun 2nd 2010 9:39AM
Eh, my reaction to 'sup' is just me being my normal cranky self. Pay it no mind.
Embrus Jun 2nd 2010 11:55AM
I really hate it when tanks do that too. Several times I've entered an instance after questing in shadow spec and write "I need to respec and get mana" only to have the tank start pulling and leaving the group if he/she dies. Some tanks just seem to be in such a hurry when instances start.
I don't see why sup would make a person seem foolish. It's just like saying bye instead of saying god be with you when you part ways. I guess asking someone what's up with them or perhaps upcoming when you just mean to greet them is a bit odd though but it's a common way of doing so.
Hal Jun 1st 2010 11:35PM
Will there ever be a way to write why you're kicking? I never see a dialogue box for it, but the prompt is still part of the vote-kick box.
Kyol Jun 1st 2010 11:40PM
The rumor that I've heard is that that depends on whether or not you're using nonstandard unitframes. Since I can't give up xperl and I votekick so rarely, I can't tell.
Hal Jun 1st 2010 11:47PM
Hm, that's possible; Healbot does seem to do funky things with the unit frames
Jen Jun 2nd 2010 6:00AM
I use the default Blizzard UI and never got a box to write a reason for the kick.
Lieke Jun 2nd 2010 6:39AM
I use XPerl and have seen the dialogue box come up. You don't actually have to enter anything though but the availability IS there.
Tj Jun 1st 2010 11:45PM
Now if only they'd drop the cooldown on the other side. Nothing is more frustrating than when you go to kick someone for being AFK or kick the "tank" who only queued as a tank was for a quicker chance to get in, and you get the message "this person cannot be kicked for another X minutes."
WTF they were kicked from their last run for a reason. Why protect them on their next run when that same reason is still valid?
juxul Jun 2nd 2010 12:12AM
Thats good to see that there doing something about the kick happy, group jumpers, invite declining why did you even quere, in a rush players.
Now if they do something about the people that wait till you get to the final boss and kick, because I was on the recieving of one with my lvl 72 when a lvl 76 tank was complaining about my dps since the middle of the dungeon(can`t rember the name been a while back but its the one in Howling Fjord). Never mind the fact that the mobs were dropping. Then again should`ve known better by the way he talked to the first tank.
Richard Jun 2nd 2010 12:02AM
In my opinion, you can never kick enough. That's not because you need to kick people all the time, but because whenever you do "need" to kick someone, something will be in the way.
I was running tonight & a guy zoned in dual-boxing hunter/warrior with the warrior on auto follow. Sadly, we just started so no kick. And even if we kicked, he'd still be in the group without the ability to kick multiple people. I just dropped group since I didn't want to deal with it & now I'm waiting out my 30 min debuff.
What I'd like to see is for them to publicize the ignore feature a lot more often! Ignore all the baddies & eventually they won't have anyone to play with. I have to hope that somewhere, there's some guy who loves being a douche waiting for hours for a queue because the tanks in his battlegroup have ignored him.
Allow people to kick as much as they want. Publicize the ignore option. Eventually, things will settle down and even out. The baddies will not be able to get a group in the LFD by their own doing & we won't be kicking people because there are no baddies in our group.
Lars Petersson Jun 2nd 2010 7:40AM
Incidentally, what I really want is a much much bigger ignore list and/or the ability to just block a whole server.
In my battlegroup, Ruin, Hakkar has been taken over by Italians and is well known for it's useless noob players. Whenever you zone in and see a Hakkar tank or healer you prepare mentally for the wipes.
Xavius just seems full of douchebags, so I'd like to be able to just block both servers...
And as a healer (mostly) I use the ignore button very frequently...
