One question...why does feign death work, but not vanish? Why doesn't Blizzard just use "death" programming (which I think is the reason that FD works so well), which pretty much never fails (when have you continued to be attacked after dying...things pretty much high tail it out of there right away), for the instant you hit vanish, but then switch it to stealth right after that? Something like this seems to fix it so it works as intended in the current set-up.
However, OTOH I agree this current fix is probably the best fix you can get and still give rogues options. Do you go for the kill or run away defensively?

Feign death just drops threat, you can still take damage from errant auto-attacks and shots in the air. The problem is that stealth breaks when you take damage, and stealth is not meant to give binary targeting protection (eg if you are too close to NPC's when you vanish they will break target but then see you straight away). Code wise I would suspect they both share the same initial threat/target removal code, and probably do with other abilities like fade and invisibility.
