Arcane Brilliance: Mage guide to quest rewards -- the early levels

I'm realizing something as I level the stinking warlock you guys thought it would be fun to have me create, and that's how incredibly fast the leveling process is these days. Gone are the days when your best bet was to pick a zone and then quest it out before moving on to the next one. I was over-leveled for the first quests in Ghostlands before I was even halfway done with Eversong Woods, and I wasn't even trying that hard. In fact, I was more actively engaged in finding new and creative ways to get myself killed than I was in questing efficiently.
The fact is, you can now absolutely pick and choose while leveling. Which zone? Which quest? Do I want to just bag the whole thing and hit some random dungeons? If something is unsavory -- say, you find yourself shackled to a quest in which you need zhevra hooves, only it is becoming rapidly apparent that none of the zhevra you're killing actually have feet -- you can skip it with negligible consequences. You're just going to come back and do it later for your Loremaster achievements anyway, right?
So today, and probably in the coming weeks (I have no idea if I'll attempt to bring these guides to you consecutively, but I might), I'm going to try to provide you with something of a sightseeing guide for your accelerated tour through Azeroth. But instead of pointing you toward destinations like Hoover Dam or the Louvre, I'm going to direct you toward a selection of particularly worthwhile quest rewards. If you do nothing else in these zones, do these quests. Today we'll focus on classic WoW, and hopefully tackle Burning Crusade and Wrath rewards in the coming weeks.
So gather your robes about you, plant your staff firmly into the path ahead and bring lots of conjured water. Our destination today? Phat loot.
A note on organization (or lack of it):
These will be primarily listed by level range and secondarily by zone. Simply scan the section for whatever level you happen to be, then look for the zones you wish to quest within. I'll also be marking rewards that are faction-specific, so you can easily eliminate those that your faction can't obtain. Keep in mind that the level I'm listing within the parentheses following the quest name is the minimum level at which you can pick up the quest. In most cases, it may be quite difficult to actually complete the quest at this level, but at least you can go get it in your quest log. The list will by no means be comprehensive. I've simply selected those quest rewards that I think are especially worth going out of your way for. Feel free to add things that I've missed in the comments below.
Levels 1-10
In this range, there simply isn't a whole lot going on, and you're typically not going to be moving beyond your racial starting zone anyway on a pilgrimage for a staff that has 1 point of intellect on it or whatever. My one piece of advice probably goes without saying: do your mage quests. I won't list each quest individually. Just visit your mage trainer at level 10 and pick up the quest for your race.
Unless you have some awesome one-handed weapon to go with the orb, take the staff. It'll probably be your first weapon with actual stats on it, and it'll give you a nice boost for the next few levels. A couple additional items to look for:
- Fallen Apprentice's Robe (Horde) - Word from the Spire (Eversong Woods 8)
- Farmhand's Vest - A Favorite Treat (Bloodmyst Isle 9)
Levels 11-20
- Staff of the Sun (Horde) - The Traitor's Demise (Ghostlands 15)
- Crescent Staff (Horde) - Leaders of the Fang (Wailing Caverns 10, but not really doable until 18-ish)
- Staff of Westfall (Alliance) - The Defias Brotherhood (Deadmines 14)
- Vindicator's Walking Stick (Alliance) - The Cryo-Core (Bloodmyst Isle 15)
This is a good selection of exceptionally powerful staves for the level at which you can acquire them. You'll notice a theme as we go through these early levels, and that theme is that the quest rewards are way better if you're a blood elf or draenei (or if you're some other race and just make the trip to the blood elf/draenei starting areas). So do with that information what you will. Also noteworthy, the dungeon quests can be obtained at a far lower level than they can reasonably be completed. Still, they're more than worth picking up early, so that when that dungeon pops up in the random finder, you're ready for it.
- Lesser Spellfire Robes/Manaweave Robe - Mage quest available at 15
Again, do your mage quests. You're a mage.
- Robe of the Dragon Slayer (Alliance) - Razormaw (Bloodmyst Isle 19 group)
- High Robe of the Adjudicator (Horde) - Assault on Fenris Isle (Silverpine Forest 17)
- Vindicator's Soft Sole Slippers (Alliance) - I Shoot Magic Into the Darkness (Bloodmyst Isle 14)
- Troll Kickers (Horde) - Escape from the Catacombs (Ghostlands 14 escort)
- Kimbra Boots and Minor Channeling Ring (Alliance) - WANTED: Chok'sul (Loch Modan 9, but not easily doable until 18-ish)
- Brewer's Gloves (Horde) - Sample for Helbrim (Chain starts in Silverpine, finishes in Undercity, 10)
- Evergreen Gloves (Alliance) - Tharnariun's Hope (Darkshore 10)
- Red Silk Trousers (Horde) - Report to Magister Kaendris (Ghostlands 15)
- Lucky Trousers (Alliance) - In Defense of the King's Lands (Loch Modan 10)
- Talbar Mantle (Either) - In Nightmares/In Nightmares (Wailing Caverns 10)
In all likelihood, this will be your first opportunity at some nice shoulder armor. You won't be able to really complete the quest until level 18ish, but pick it up anyway.
- Relic Hunter Belt (Alliance) - The Absent Minded Prospector (Darkshore 15)
- Grassland Sash (Horde) - Consumed by Hatred (Barrens 14)
- Featherbead Bracers (Horde) - Returning the Lost Satchel (Ragefire Chasm 9, but not really advisable before 14-ish)
- Divining Crystal (Horde) - Deactivate An'owyn (Ghostlands 11)
- Sunwell Orb (Horde) - The Twin Ziggurats (Ghostlands 15)
- Carved Crystalline Orb (Alliance) - WANTED: Deathclaw (Bloodmyst Isle 9, but not wise to undertake before 14-ish)
- Ley-Keeper's Wand (Horde) - Dar'Khan's Lieutenants (Ghostlands 17)
- Torchlight Wand (Alliance) The Coastal Menace (Westfall 15)
- Mystic Shawl (Horde) - Pyrewood Ambush (Silverpine Forest 12)
I have no specific suggestions for Alliance cloaks or bracers at this level range; most of what's out there simply doesn't have mage-specific stats. Take what you can get here, and keep in mind that stamina is a great leveling stat for mages.
Levels 21-30
As we progress into the mid and upper ranges of the leveling process, the options become even more numerous and varied. I'm going to limit my suggestions even more, mentioning only those rewards that I feel are especially noteworthy.
- Rose Mantle (Alliance) - Morganth (Redridge Mountains 20)
- Voodoo Mantle (Horde) - Jin'Zil's Forest Magic (Stonetalon Mountains 20)
If the shoulder piece from Wailing Caverns isn't on your radar, these are the next ones you should aim for.
- Hooded Cowl and Charred Wand (Horde) - Dangerous! (Hillbrad Foothills 17, but bastard-hard at that level)
Here you have a two-fer. That hood, for you Horde mages, sucks hard. But it's probably the first head piece you'll be able to get your mitts on, so snatch it up when you can. Plus, you get a wand! This quest line is much easier in a group. Just saying.
- Warsong Sash (Horde) - Warsong Supplies (Ashenvale 22)
Best belt out there for a while, really. The quest can take a while to complete, and makes you run around a lot for no defensible purpose, but is well worth it.
- Gravestone Scepter (Either) - Blackfathom Villainy/Blackfathom Villainy (Blackfathom Deeps 18, wait to do it until 24-ish)
- Witch's Finger (Horde) - Baron Aquanis (Blackfathom Deeps 21, must pick up Amongst the Ruins first to make the Baron spawn)
Great rewards from these dungeon quests, and worth doing a fairly tiresome instance to get.
- Astral Knot Robe/Blouse (Alliance) or Netherlace Robe/Tunic (Horde) - Mage quest available at 26
Again, if you're a mage, mage quests are mandatory. It's a rule. And because I'm writing this, I get to make up the rules as I go along. My next rule: Pants are optional. Also, I declare June 5 to be the start of warlock season. Happy hunting!
That's it for the first 30 levels of sweet quest loot. Next, we'll tackle the rest of the old world, before moving on to Outland and Northrend. I don't know when I'll get them done, but hopefully it'll be before Cataclysm arrives and renders everything I've just written completely worthless. So what did I miss? Which quests rewards did you get the most mileage out of on your mage? Which ones do you always recommend to leveling mages?

That blouse looks terrible on male gnomes. I know that from experince.
Fairnia Jun 5th 2010 2:24PM
I see what you did there, Mr. Belt. By making a rule that the mage quests are mandatory, nobody can argue that this is a *warlock* list of quest items. Clever.
Urza Jun 5th 2010 7:26PM
I wish I had this list when I was leveling both my Mage and my Warlock. :P

In Ghostlands for Horde players, completing this quest: http://www.wowhead.com/quest=9140 will give you a choice of 4 items including a nice wand: http://www.wowhead.com/item=28151
The Alliance have a similar Quest in Bloodmyst Isle http://www.wowhead.com/quest=9569 and one of the 2 rewards is a similar wand with the same stats on it.
I highly recommend doing this quest (first one for Horde, second one for Alliance) since this is pretty much the only wand you can get with some actual stats on it for a while.
Randomize Jun 5th 2010 4:44PM
For Horde, you can also obtain a very good wand with excellent stats on it by killing a rare in the Ghostlands. He's named Dr. Witherlimb, and he can be found in either ziggurat along the Dead Scar or in Deatholme. He's got a fairly quick respawn rate, and realistically he's going to be there because there simply aren't as many people in the Ghostlands as there used to be. But getting a Banshee Rod http://www.wowhead.com/item=31270#comments is great, it gives you stats and great weapon dps, which are hard to find at a low level.
Kittens Jun 5th 2010 10:22PM
Also for horde, at level 17 you can pick up a quest in Hillsbrad Foothills that will net you the Inferno Robe: http://www.wowhead.com/item=2231
Now, you are going to need help from a higher level friend with this since it requires you to kill a lvl 40 guy. But a 19 spellpower robe is not something to pass up at lvl 17 :)

Actually, it is the Warlock.
1-80, the Lock can rip through PVE content like no other class.
I pretty much soloed all Elite Quest bosses, 2 and 3 man ones, (and a few 5s) all the way through.
A Demo spec Lock is more of his own group than even the Hunter.
Once you get the talents/glyphs to boost your Healing to the point where Tap becomes no-cost, well that's all she wrote for PVE.
Have a blast with your Lock.
Nothing can touch it.
Cyanea Jun 5th 2010 3:29PM
It's even more crazy ridiculous if you go deep Affliction to level. I would go out of my way to pull five things at once, and all the healing you get from Siphon Life, Drain Life, and Haunt is way more than the damage the mobs can do to you.
Plus your imp becomes a walking mana battery. Win win.
jorge_av Jun 5th 2010 2:40PM
Eh, I skipped the two robe mage quests because I had a heirloom chest piece. That was purchased by my lock. :) So, no, not all mage quests are mandatory.
vanye111 Jun 5th 2010 3:18PM
Why not do them, since they are quests with quest XP.
jorge_av Jun 5th 2010 4:09PM
Because, I could easily walk over to Westfall and do 2 or 3 quests by the time it takes me to run to Loch Modan to find the quest items.
Kaz Jun 5th 2010 3:00PM
"Also, I declare June 5 to be the start of warlock season. Happy hunting!"
I thought it was ALWAYS open season on Warlocks. This makes it sound like there is a time when we're not supposed to be setting them on fire. Don't tell me you getting soft on Warlocks Archmage Pants.
"...plant your staff firmly into the path ahead..."
Did that sound dirty to anyone else?
thegatherer Jun 5th 2010 3:22PM
While it may be open season on 'locks, it was voted by the Azerothian DCB (Department of Class Balance) that the population of mages is making them pests, therefore, there is no time that getting a mage in the bag is illegal.
Have fun all my 'lock brethren!

My mage is my banker, but I've grown so bored, I decided to level him. Timely topic (for me, at least). Thank you for a great read.
Tim Jun 5th 2010 3:21PM
Like the idea. Only problem for most of the items I'm heirloomed to the teeth. Anyway, look forward to the next article on this topic. Who knows, you might add something in there that I can use on my mage. And because of you Mr. Belt I am prejudiced of warlocks also. I hated them before, now I know that I'm not alone and my hate means something...
thegatherer Jun 5th 2010 3:23PM
Hate is nothing but a tool. A tool we like to twist into fear!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
themark0fevil Jun 5th 2010 5:16PM
There is one decent cloak that Alliance can obtain in that level range (PvP rewards aside): http://www.wowhead.com/item=6667 - Engineer's Cloak from http://www.wowhead.com/quest=1096 - Gerenzo Wrenchwhistle. This cloak *can* be obtained by Horde as well, but the Ashenvale one is much better.
(Also, the belt from Blackfathom Deeps is a much better belt than any other option, and lasts for a ridiculous amount of time, but it's not a quest reward :P)
icepyro Jun 5th 2010 5:26PM
I would just like to mention that it was always Daffy who posted the signs on hunting seasons. We know how that usually turns out. Just sayin.
Oh and for all the heirloom wearers, do pay attention to the stats vs level. Not sure how the mage heirlooms compare, but my 27 priest is not wearing a large portion of his heirloom gear because the stats are better on drops and rewards.
Bronwyn Jun 5th 2010 6:54PM
While there are sometimes quest rewards and dungeon gear that is slightly better for a level or two, I find the xp bonus on the heirloom chest/shoulders and the high-powered enchants (at lower level anyway- the AGI and spellpower chants especially are quite op) you can put on the weapons make it more worthwhile to just stick with those items.
Element61 Jun 5th 2010 6:55PM
sligthly better stats vs. potentailly 20% bonus exp from heirloom...easy choce mate
