Want to get into the beta and don't know how? Well, here's a chance for you and nine of your guild members to make it in.
Blizzard is asking for players to send in a short essay on why their guild should be accepted into the beta and what they'll do to push the new
Cataclysm systems to the brink. You'll be able to play with and give feedback on the new
guild leveling system, updated professions, the new
archaeology system and even run the
worgen and
goblin starting zones.
They'll be picking 100 contestants each week over the course of five weeks. Check the
contest rules and then send your essay to
blizzardcontest@blizzard.com to enter.

One point of fine print in the contest rules: it specifies that the entrant for a particular guild needs to be the guild master for said guild.
"4. Entry in the contest. Beginning on the Commencement Date, you can enter the Contest by emailing a short essay (50 to 250 words) elaborating on why the World of Warcraft guild that the entrant is the guild master of should take part in the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Beta Test"

it would be a safe bet to make sure you use the same email used for your battle.net acc too

Too bad they don't have a similar contest for us that are a bit more 'lone wolf' players.
:(
Shade Jun 7th 2010 7:13PM
If you've been keeping up with the developer's vision for cataclysm, you'd know it's because they want to get rid of us. They want all raiders in large raiding guilds, even on the casual level.
Ricohardt Jun 7th 2010 7:26PM
yet they are making 10 and 25s on almost equal footing. A small friendly guild like mine can finally not be looked down on by the gearscore crowd.

Shade:
I wouldn't say they "want to get rid of" lone wolves, but I can certainly get behind the incentivization of the "social health" and baked in accountability of guild membership.
While there are well adjusted, willing lone wolves out there (and perhaps Nick is one of them) they are the exception, the rule being unwilling lone wolves, (ex guildies or guild hoppers), people that should probably get the hint and realize an MMO might not be for them.
I would certainly advise the well-adjusted, willing lone wolves out there to look into guild membership. Identify what you like about the game, and I can almost guarantee you that there's a group, even within transfer range, that lines up with your likes and dislikes.
This is an MMO, and its further development reflects that fact.
Sincerely
an officer of a small, comfy guild of RL friends that, as individuals, do what we want, when we want, with a friendly social backdrop... Also known as a pack of lone wolves ;)

I don't see how they're forcing raiders into large conglomerate guilds, especially with the guild leveling system. The top twenty guild xp earners are the only ones to effect guild level anyways. And yes, there are going to be guild talents and recipes that will make raiding easier, but I've heard nothing of the tiers and boss drops going away. So, basically the system will stay the same anyways. Being in a raiding guild of some kind will come with some benefits, but certainly none that make casual puggers or lone wolves outdated or useless.

"They want all raiders in large raiding guilds, even on the casual level."
Ah, no. No they don't want that. Where did you get that idea?
kooda Jun 8th 2010 2:49AM
I'm in a raiding guild but i don't raid im there because they're all friendly nice to play with people. Call me casual but i dont have time to raid due to real life.
Shiro Jun 7th 2010 7:07PM
The Korean contest is much simpler :(

Eric J Jun 7th 2010 7:11PM
I'd apply, but i'm not sure I actually HAVE 9 active guild members :)
kunukia Jun 7th 2010 9:06PM
Believe me, if you win this, you could get a few more high quality players in a heart beat, however picky you were. For the duration of the Beta anyway.
louandy2001 Jun 7th 2010 7:13PM
any ideas when the eu contest will happen?
wrlakers Jun 7th 2010 7:17PM
How do they choose the states that are not eligible for contests because i live in Vermont and it says we arnt aloud to do contest :(.
Shiro Jun 7th 2010 7:18PM
State law
spartan_e58 Jun 7th 2010 7:19PM
I saw in the contest rules that it will end July 12th. Think the beta will be up and running around then?
Sal Jun 7th 2010 7:19PM
Not only can it only be the GM but they can't live in "NORTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, CONNECTICUT, OR MARYLYAND". While I've never heard of Marylyand, I live in MD and am assuming calling out the typo won't work. Living in MD has never excluded me from a contest before :(
element_v Jun 7th 2010 7:23PM
Move then :)

i think this is a neat idea. now i wont do another beta because i think it spoils it too much. still, cool news. good luck to all.
