Breakfast Topic: Dealing with unpleasant players

They were still making snide comments about it while we were pulling trash to the Maiden of Grief, and I finally snapped, "He's right. You can spare a second to interrupt the cast, and if you won't do that, the least you can do is avoid killing a mind-controlled player." The abuse rerouted in my direction for a few minutes, but one of the nice things about working here is that after you've been a target of the professional trolling class, their amateur counterparts don't have that much effect.
It leaves me wondering how you deal with unpleasant players without causing a blow-up or turning into a bit of an ass yourself (as I admit I probably was while coming to the defense of the moonkin). We all run into them eventually, and I don't know whether it's better to speak up on behalf of a bullied player who may not want the help, simply drop group or spend the run in silence, not rising to the bait.

Sometimes I will say something like, "Oh... here we go again- yet another generic. insecure abusive jerk in a computer game." Somehow that shuts them up.
I laugh at them.. or when I am healing.. just stop healing them.. then laugh.

I seem to run into these guys in the Random Dungeon finder alot-- just lucky i guess. I usually ignore them but have on occasion lost my temper and let them have it for being such mean spirited jerks. These people are the worst part of WOW for me, and sometimes make me just want to stop playing. In RL I am (almost) never exoposed to such nastiness, and i ask myself why im playing a game where i am forced to deal with it . . .

Sounds like the mage didn't know his/her class...
1) Counterspell the MOB's mind control ability
2) Slow on the counterspell? Sheep the MC'ed player
3) No need to DPS an MC'ed player if you have CC or stun moves (any class)
Three strikes and you're out! This is why we mages get a bad name =(

I wish Blizz implemented a battlegroup only friends list(not the upcoming real id thing), theres alot of people I have met in those runs that I wish I could talk to and group up with again.
The fact its impossible, and the effect it has had on the community(among other things like Gearscore), has ruined the game for me to the point where I now have to justify renewing my subscription.

I run with warlock who kept telling the tank to pull more in the Nexus cause he had to go run his daily on his tank still. we were going one group at a time and it was a decent pace, not slow at all. Right before Anomalus i snapped and said "It's called patience. Learn some." the lock retorted with "its called tanking, learn it." and the tank pulled everything on the platform before Anomolus and then ran straight at Anomolus. it got the lock to shut up and our awesome healer kept us from wiping.

Teleport out of the instance if I am the healer. Don't drop the group. See what they do. Sometimes even say BRB knowing that I am not coming back.

@draco - I had a similar situation a while back in Nexus. I was tanking, and DK dps kept badgering me to pull faster, even when the healer clearly wasn't ready.
On the second to last platform b/f Anomalous, I told him "I'll pull when I see the healer is ready. If you don't like that, sac up and tank."
He could only reply with "I can tank :/", which was met with a bunch of 'lol's from the rest of the group. He was quiet the rest of the run. :)

Go play an FPS for 2 hours and all the "abuse" in wow seems so well meaningless like it's actually meant friendly ^^

WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN
CvijaFaQ Jun 8th 2010 9:54AM
God dammit, I know you hack and use aimbots, you n00b, get out of this server, no one wants your sorry ass here.
Does that even come close? Only real FPS I play online is TF2 and haven't encountered anyone unpleasant so far.
Whitelith Jun 8th 2010 10:11AM
its whenever they get their asses handed to them that they cry hacks. pathetic, really.

Honestly playing FPS aren't as bad as WoW for computers in my opinion. Then again I play Battlefield games and I suppose they would be a lot better than games on Xbox. Overall though, Ive found that the players are willing to help you learn how to use certain vehicles if you really give it a good try and servers are well patrolled for rude people.

Speaking of FPS games I usually use my favorite games quotes when people act like jerks.
That is.. Team Fortress 2. Too bad noone notices the references.

I have to agree on this.. playing games on different platform and also changing the genre can increase or decrease the good chat and bad chat.
Such as Genre F on Platform X = Racist*homphobic+swearing and a dash of nice.
and Genre M on Platform C = lots of nice chat, with a dash of the bad.
Not always the same, but I know if I hop on an Xbox vs a PC how things may differ in voice chat and if I hop on an FPS vs an MMO how things can differ there.

I usually end up doing what you did, but will also /w the targeted player and let them know what I think personally, and how I agree with them. It's been a while since the situation has continued for a while like it sounds your situation had; when that happens, I will eventually speak up for common sense.
The new LFD tool is certainly a very sharp, double-edged sword. Unfortunately it seems the increased anonymity of playing with others you probably won't see again tends to bring out the worst in some people, whereas it brings out the best in others.

I'm with you on the whispering. I've made a couple of neat cross-realms friendships with people just by giving them an encouraging "don't sweat those guys, you're in the right" whisper.
If the abuse is over the top I /ignore those guys so I don't have the displeasure of running with them again. Being a tank, I have a large pool of players to LFG with so no harm done.

I think it's best to just ignore then. Treat them like the little kids they are.
Boz Jun 8th 2010 9:38AM
Ignoring done correctly is very effective. I started the following after encountering an an anti-Semitic tool in a Gnomer PUG:
Step 1 - Put player on "Ignore"
Step 2 - Ask in party chat for the other players to relay any important or relevant information the ignored player might have, making sure to reference that you are now ignoring that player
Step 3 - Run remainder of dungeon
Message delivered without feeding the troll; this has worked for me on multiple lowbie dungeon runs, and I've only ever had one ignored DPS drop as a result.
Bonus: You will not be grouped with that player again in the future.
Happy Gaming.
