Breakfast Topic: Dealing with unpleasant players

They were still making snide comments about it while we were pulling trash to the Maiden of Grief, and I finally snapped, "He's right. You can spare a second to interrupt the cast, and if you won't do that, the least you can do is avoid killing a mind-controlled player." The abuse rerouted in my direction for a few minutes, but one of the nice things about working here is that after you've been a target of the professional trolling class, their amateur counterparts don't have that much effect.
It leaves me wondering how you deal with unpleasant players without causing a blow-up or turning into a bit of an ass yourself (as I admit I probably was while coming to the defense of the moonkin). We all run into them eventually, and I don't know whether it's better to speak up on behalf of a bullied player who may not want the help, simply drop group or spend the run in silence, not rising to the bait.

We have a player in our guild that occassionally pugs on his druid tank. He gives a speech at the start of every run that goes something like "I will pull as fast as I am comfortable doing. I am not looking for a super fast run, but I don't tend to dawdle either. However, if you think my pace is too slow and you pull for me, then I will let you tank and see how far you get."
I think his speech (and attitude) is better than that other guy's.

I pray to God that Cataclysm has some mechanic where the psycho chainpulling tanks get obliterated in a way that they look visciously stupid if they try to blame the healer. Where the only right outcome is four people laughing at him and humiliating him and all he can do is drop group or take it like a man and learn to play nice with others.
I also pray to God tenacity pets can actually tank heroics, so we have more freedom to boot jackass tanks. This "I'm the tank and you're screwed for 20 minutes if u piss me off so do it my way or stfu noobs" crap has really got to end.

@Grovinofdarkhour
You'll see in the beginning of cataclysm what was true at the beginning of Wrath, that it's impossible to chain pull mobs in a heroic dungeon. The only reason why we can now is because everyone outgears the dungeons, BoAs outgear reg dungeons by a large margin. So, when you see a tank all gung ho in a dungeon in the beginning of cataclysm, trying to chain pull the entire place, do yourself a favor and feign death or turn invisible or whatever you can do to drop aggro cause it's gonna be a wipe.

Heh. I've gotten the opposite reaction a lot. I'm leveling a bear tank, almost to 80, and I can't count the times that i've had dps screaming 'GOGOGOGOGOGO!" when i pause because I notice our healer has no mana, or when we first get into the instance, pulling a few at a time so I can see how well we can handle them before doing bigger pulls. Success for me as a tank, is they all die, we don't.

I always rise to the defense of the attacked. It is not always the best idea, but I just hate the bullies. IRL in high school I was the bully or with the bully, not proud of it, but it was high school and I decided to eat not be eaten. I should probably just stay quiet and hope things will calm down or blow over, my blood boils and there is no chance of that. You are in a group for maybe a half hour a little kindness please. I have been kicked a few times for such grievous atrocities as defending a hunter rolling on a sword. The bully was a mage and said the hunter never had to melee and should not have rolled on the sword. I merely pointed out that mage were not well known for their melee prowess either and there I was standing on the dock, no satchel for you. No it was not a spell power sword, no I still don’t get it either. Still I won’t stop I am not a bully anymore but I still don't want to be eaten.

I very rarely heal in LFD groups anymore. I come home from work to play the game and relax. I don't feel the need to have some 12 year old nerd raging on me because I did not heal thru his stupidity. I hate dropping group when that happens, I tend to just put the person on ignore and barely heal them if at all for the rest of the run. Dropping group punishes the rest of the group that are not morons.
Like I said though, I have just stopped healing.
Tirrimas Jun 8th 2010 10:36AM
I've been healing on my Druid. I'll admit, I'm new at this and probably suck. I'm doing my best to learn. Got a BRD run last night.
We went through three tanks.
First one chain pulled, didn't offer any heals of his own (pally), and kept running out of range. Wouldn't listen to the ones who KNEW the dungeon and tried to offer directions. Dropped after pulling the ENTIRE Manufactory and I couldn't keep up.
Second one did the same, and stated that if she initiated one more pull without heals, she was gone. Curvy hallways and Lyceum = LoS and OOR. I cannot keep up with a Warrior's Charge. Dropped after Emperor.
Third one actually helped us complete the quest we requested the others help us with (Ironfel).
(Quick note - the Hunter we had was AWESOME. There's more to Huntering than DPS - he used his abilities to pull my beef outta the fire many times during that run. I'm MOST appreciative.)
PLEASE, tanks - slow down and know where your healer is!

After having read a lot of articles here and elsewhere about how people struggle to find good tanks, how you either get a-holes or just plain noobs (pardon the language), I've always tried to be a fair and decent tank. Not rushing unnecessarily, not flaming people with gear lvls lower than mine, being considerate of newer healers and players in general. I try to not just quit a group after the 1st wipe, since I know how long deeps have to wait fro tanks to swing round, but sometimes, just sometimes....
I have found myself in a lot of groups with trigger happy, overeager dps (hunters mostly, sorry) who will egg me on to go faster or the like, will ninja pull random mob groups (without MDing me, or FDing after) and then I'm left to run arround like a headless chicken trying to pickup all the loose ends, since the other dpsers are inevitable targeting entirely diffrent mobs aswell. After a wipe caused by such events, if said instigator actually has the gall to then call me a noob tank or a moron etc, I will drop group, I will not argue, I will not taunt that player, I will not do anything for that group from that moment on. I am really sorry, but I am an adult who gets hassled at work all day in the same manner, I wont stand to be inuslted by a 14 year old who needs a good smack against the head.
That's how I deal with it. Call me stupid, but sticking around trying to argue with children or childish adults who get their jollies off from enraging other people, really isn't a way I want to spend my time in wow. That's also why I find the /ignore function such a blessing.
/end rant

Personally, that is why I would love a /dopeslap emote. Just a polite reminder...

I play a hunter as my main, and used to take offense at comments about "huntards". Then I started leveling a tankadin, and now I understand the hunter-hate. :*(
I don't know why it's so hard for most hunters to simply follow a few easy dps rules - don't pull for the tank unless asked, hold your horses and let the tank get aggro before you open up, and freakin' misdirect (once you've got it).
I do my best never to be "that hunter" but I have no sympathy for anyone who thinks their dps meter is the be all and end all of life.
A_V Jun 8th 2010 12:33PM
You know, I used to have the 'headless chicken' mindframe when people pulled ahead of my tanking and I had to desperately pull them back but now I have the mentality of: If you pull before I do, enjoy having it eat your face. I'm not bothering with it.
SunGod228 Jun 8th 2010 8:22AM
It blows my mind how quick a player will flame healers or tanks. I know I got berated once for using 10min pally buffs in a heroic.
All I can think is, "Umm yeah I'm tanking and didn't have to wait 20min for this group so keep it up bub"
J Jun 8th 2010 8:47AM
So the DPS should simply be grateful that you decided to put them out of their queue misery, regardless of how lazy or entitled you happen to feel today?
Symbol of Kings is not expensive. Cough up.
SunGod228 Jun 8th 2010 9:11AM
Like I said there are a lot of factors cost of reagents isn't really one, like i said in my post i was trying to blow the guy off:
1) If for some reason I have to change specs, group buffs get dropped. I have to rebuff everyone, it happens sometimes even when you loose a dps in a group. We get a tank and I have to switch to Ret.
2) Usually I am the only pally and people want different buffs. So Class buffs don't work
3) There are only 4 other people that need buffed. I don't have a large mana pool to start a tankadin.
Blessing of kings costs 6% base mana x5 players thats 30% base mana.
Greater Blessing costs 12% base mana x7 classes thats 60% base mana.
I am trying to get things moving it's only a heroic. I can make the first pull with 70% mana going in under 50% is risky. So now i have to stop an drink when otherwise I could have begun pulling.
4) Granted I have to rebuff people as we go, but i find that I can spot buff individuals people between mobs effectively keeping everyone buffed with no downtime only using 6% base mana in between pulls.
5) IT'S THE SAME BUFF. As long as i keep it up on everyone in the group you are getting 10% increase to stats regardless so who cares. This does not make me a noob or crappy player.
So there are plenty of reasons for me to not using greater blessings in heroics. NONE of them have to do with how much the symbols cost. So Even if there was no reagent I would still use 10min buff and with good reason. But you knew all this already cause you play a Pally right?
J Jun 8th 2010 9:18AM
I do play a pally, actually. A tank.
Seriously, you're complaining about mana usage for a buff that you want to put out multiple times? Just give everyone their Greater buff, drink something (which takes all of 5 seconds, with our tiny mana pools), and go.
This is my problem with LFG tanks. You get into the mindset that you're so valuable that no one should ever disagree with you, or challenge how you do anything.
SunGod228 Jun 8th 2010 9:41AM
I was justifying my personal reason for using blessing instead of greater blessing after you assumed I was being cheap (you know what happens when you assume). I have no problem with people using greater blessings in pugs.
And ironically you seem to be saying I have to agree with your way of buffing heroic pugs. So who's the player here that thinks everyone should agree with them :)
Grak Jun 8th 2010 9:44AM
@ SunGod228
Yes, my main is a tankadin, and I've been tanking dungeons for most of this expansion. And sorry I've never heard such ridiculous nonsense. After zoning into a heroic I buff myself with Sanctuary and SoComm, then I buff x4 greater Kings, and occasionaly someone asks for Might which they get a greater blessing again. And I then still have enough mana to start the pull and not look back.
Buffing 10min blessings is cheap, and invariably they are forgotten to be rebuffed. I dont have a problem with 30min fortitudes or motw's, but 10min blessings are just plain annoying.
Frizzle Jun 8th 2010 9:52AM
Are we arguing about buffs in heroics?
Sinfulle Jun 8th 2010 9:52AM
The only time I use ten minute paladin buffs is this scenario: End of dungeon wipes on last trash or final boss. Unless the dungeon is seconds from being finished, I'd rather have the peace of mind that everyone is buffed and will remain so for the duration. If you are constantly refreshing those ten minute buffs during the run, that creates just as much downtime due to mana loss. Probably even more downtime as you are clicking group members to check buff durations, and they tend to run out during fights. Also, Glyph of Blessing of Kings, a minor glyph, reduces mana cost of the most used buff.
As far as mana recovery.............level cooking? I catch fish in Northrend and cook them up, they give both health and mana, and are very cheap since you catch them yourself. Sauteed Goby, Smoked Rockfin, Grilled Bonescale. None of those require Northrend spices, interfere with other food buffs, or have difficult to find base ingredients. Any of those foods I listed will have a tank Paladin back to full mana in the blink of an eye.
