Sounds like the mage didn't know his/her class...

1) Counterspell the MOB's mind control ability
2) Slow on the counterspell? Sheep the MC'ed player
3) No need to DPS an MC'ed player if you have CC or stun moves (any class)

Three strikes and you're out! This is why we mages get a bad name =(
