In most heroic 70 instances the trash is a lot more dangerous than the bosses. They actually expected you to CC things back then, so if you aren't then their damage output is very high, and they strip off Inner Fire much faster. Three tips for shadow priests on trash:
1. Don't be afraid to Mind Control to pull a pack, many heroic mobs are immune but if you learn which ones aren't then on a hard pack you get a free kill off the bat, and often get some decent damage in on the others.
2. Run away! This is often key when one of the mobs has a regularly used interrupt or stun. Cast VT on that mob to pull at max range then run away as you put up pain and plague on the same mob. As you keep running put pain on the other mobs in the pull. Soon enough the interrupt/stun mob will be dead and the others will already have a DoT on them. If there is a second interrupt/stun mob then start out the same way by putting all your DoTs on the first mob, then put Pain on the second one and Shadow Word: Death it right away to lower it's health. When the first mob is almost death move plague over.
3. If you run into a true AoE pull (large number of mobs with low hit points) use Holy Nova.

Great tips.
I don't know how I forgot to include this in the article, but your post reminded me ... if you can, use line of sight. There are an awful lot of places in BC heroics where you can turn a corner, bringing the melee with you while LOSing the spell casters. You interrupt their casting, giving you a few moments of time without taking damage from them.

I have to agree with visitingl337noob. Mind Control is such a powerful tool for soloing dungeons. So good in fact, that I would consider using the Glyph of Mind Control for insurance. I would also use Glyph of Inner Fire since a lot of the damage you take will be physical. For maximum survivability and control I would use:
Glyph of Inner Fire
Glyph of Mind Control
Glyph of Dispersion
Better mitigation, more control of large packs, and a lower cooldown on the Shadow Priest's ultimate "oh s@#$" button.

Another tip I'll add that I'm surprised wasn't mentioned.
On some pulls, if you start with shadowfiend (i.e. the fiend has aggro on all mobs) hit fade, you can mind sear your heart out while the shadowfiend tanks. I've done this many times and it more often than not works out amazingly well.
Also, if you try and solo Heroic Durnholde, the second boss cleanses DoT's and Dieases and heals, so have fun....
