Breakfast Topic: Strange habits

So off I go to a new guild and server where I know no one. I'm scared -- scared I won't be good enough, scared they won't like me even if I am and scared I might be making a huge mistake in leaving my friends. You just have to swallow those kinds of thoughts, though. As a raider, I'm no stranger to moving around, and I've come up with many ways to deal with it.
One thing I do to cope is heading up to the spot you see in the picture before I transfer. This is my favorite hiding spot in the game, only accessible by players meticulous enough to complete the Higher Learning achievement. Up here, I will sit and eat some cake, then after I've had my fill, set out my little green rag doll on the bed and /sleep. The reason for this is so that when I log back in after my transfer has gone through, I know exactly where I'll be and I can pretend I'm waking up from a dream (or nightmare) to a new, promising day. I'm not sure why I do this; maybe the familiarity? It's really all quite silly, but I've been doing it for well over a year now and it seems natural.
Do you have any strange habits or rituals you do in game?

That's really cool, it is like your character goes to sleep and your real life is the character's weird dream of a place with things called "cars" and "responsibility" lol.
And on the topic of a "perfect guild," I don't think one exists. It's like trying to find the perfect man or woman. You may find someone who comes close, but they will always have flaws and imperfections, but that could also be what makes them great! And to say they are "perfect" could actually be putting immense stress and pressure on them to try and maintain that image...but I digress.
Basically, "you take the good, you take the bad, and there you have the facts of..." well, you know.

I know a girl who is always sure to /sleep on a hammock or bed before she logged off... We didn't get to play the game much together because my off-putting attitude was so bad then, but I introduced her to WoW, and she loved it. I miss that girl.

When I was on an RP server, my characters tried to stay true to real life little things. Whenever one of them would have to trudge through water, or swim, there would always be a couple minutes sitting by a fire, mostly naked, as their clothes dried. Yes, it did consume quite a bit of time, but I always had time for cooking & making bandages.

Likewise, I also log off only after I go to an inn, stand on a bed and type /sleep. :S
I refresh my Blessings to be exactly five minutes apart from my Seals without either running out. Let's say, Seal of Command lasts 30 mins and Blessing of Might 10 mins; when SoC is down to 25 mins, I refresh BoM. And if they're a minute apart, I get angry. Latent obsessive-compulsive disorder? 0_0
I salute military higher-ups when they cross me on the street, and always bow to the King upon entering Stormwind Keep to queue for Battlegrounds.
I always re-center my character in the character screen so that he faces precisely forward.
I recheck my bags when I have nothing to do.
I type the /smell emote whenever there's a passive Forsaken nearby.
Whenever the middle teller at the SW bank asks me "You...need something?", I say IRL "of course not, my good man! I only came to the bank to look at your charming mug!"
I have more issues than I thought. :P

Whenever I do the jousting dailies, I only ever fight the Blood Elf valiants.
Lohkie Jun 13th 2010 10:37AM
lol as a bloodelf i always make sure that the last fight for me is the nightelf.
i dont rp, but i feel like its payback for all the crap tha happened in the past
:D

I always joust the Dwarves last as they used to give me the most trouble. I know that's not possible but still.
Also, before every raid on my warlock I like to take her to Dalaran and sit in the washtub with the elemental inside on the balcony of the clothes store. Never worked out why.
Valt Jun 13th 2010 11:59AM
I do this for humans/gnomes. I would do it to nelf males but there is.. none!?
Also my favorite thing is after each CoT run I jump on top of the chest and start to dance.
On every single toon. Everytime.
TR Jun 13th 2010 10:48PM
@Valt
Yes! YES!!!!! When the Black Knight swoops down and does his speech about being "bested on the field of your pathetic little tournament" I always /nod because half the time the voice for that emote is "Uh huh" or "Sounds fine."
In CoT I always dance on the tables of the town hall before each wave, /yell "Oh snap!" as Jaina walks away from Arthas at the beginning, and /pat him (mockingly) when he gets all "To the ends of the earth!!!" emo when Mal'Ganis leaves at the end.
Of course there's the obligatory /taunt to all bosses in all instances and raids. :)

When I was still doing the jousting dailies, I would never joust the Taurens. I just like 'em too much.
As a nelf druid, I also make a point of saluting or bowing to tauren druids. Since we're gonna have company on both sides in the future, figure I may as well try to keep the friendliness intact as long as possible.
Mithris Jun 13th 2010 8:30AM
I always "log off" rather than "exit game" just so I can do one last check to see how cool my character is or isn't looking. Lol
Kynsi Jun 13th 2010 8:32AM
I only tend to wear gear that matches a tabbard of some sort. If it doesn't, I won't use it regardless of the obvious benefits. I'm a diva like that!

I'm new to WoW (the game and this site), and I find it fascinating how you've incorporated cultural traditions and rituals into the virtual environment. I am not being facetious when I ask this but do you find that your online identity is something seperate from your own or do you consider it an extension? My question is how differently do you behave online than you do off?
Dawn Moore Jun 13th 2010 9:23AM
That's an interesting question for sure. When I raid or PvP, or do anything that interacts with other players, I'm pretty much completely the same person as I am in real life. But when it's just me, playing the game by myself and doing things by myself, my character takes on a life of her own which is an extension of me but not necessarily the same person as me. I have all sorts of outfits, habits, favorite places I go. I have names for my mounts and pets, and dialogues that I'll conduct in /say even if everyone around me is thinking "WTF." I even have theme music and a costume for when I fly around in my Mimiron's head, and I'll go looking for lowbies to buff and help out if they're in trouble. It feels like such a super hero mount, you know?
I did used to play on an RP server before I raided so there is a bit of comfort I've developed to express my character in the game, even if it's just by myself. I am very sentimental about my characters and I have two priests because I wanted to join an Alliance guild but didn't have the heart to faction transfer my blood elf priest to another race. It just didn't seem right. =)
I take a lot of screenshots that kind of... document the life of my character. I made a video out of it last year too. I'll do another one later this year. I'll have to upload it and post it on discopriest.com (my personal blog) so people can see it.

Here it is. I can't believe I'm showing this to you guys /facepalm

Dawn, your embarrassment is our entertainment! :o
No but seriously, that was a cool video, thanks for sharing. I definitely get nostalgic when I look back through my screenshots of WoW (and previous MMO's) and remember friends I've made and experiences I've had.
Fizzmonaut Jun 13th 2010 12:54PM
Thanks for sharing and answering the questions. As someone who is relatively new to WoW I find it interesting to watch how people interact and behave in the WoW world. It's interesting to just toon watch sometimes. Cheers.
jimbob Jun 13th 2010 11:23AM
Dawn, what's the tune you used in that video called?
ambermist Jun 13th 2010 12:00PM
@Dawn
The whole /say thing, totally on board with you, there. I never played on an RP server, but I'm familiar with RP, and I like how you can let yourself get immersed in the game sometimes.
I was going to make a list of moments I have RPed on my normal server, but I realized that list might be kind of long.
So thank you for the blog idea, I'm off to write that now!

@jimbob I wish I knew, but the song came to me through an hour long mix that a DJ friend sent me. When I showed him the video last year and said "hey, what song was this?" he said "lol, I can't remember." Hopefully someone will recognize it one day and I can hear the whole piece.
