Here's some good news for everyone planning to roll a goblin or worgen, or even a
human hunter or troll druid, when the expansion hits: Your heirlooms will still work, but only until level 80. At
the recent Cataclysm press event, Blizzard confirmed that heirlooms from the
Wrath era will still work for new characters in the
Cataclysm era, and specifically even for goblins and worgen. Since you earned them, you should still get to use them.
However, they also note that the heirlooms will only work up to level 80. At level 80, you'll have to start using new heirlooms that will be added in
Cataclysm itself. So go ahead, buy that
Bloodied Arcanite Reaper for your new
holy cow or worgen warrior; it'll still work just fine, at least until you get level 80.

Wohoo! So gonna macro my Worgen warrior!
Arcanite Reaper! Hoooooooo!
Marc Jun 13th 2010 6:14AM
Oh man please add worgen shammy's to Cata, it's the only class I don't have an 80 of and I REALLY don't want a stoopid Goblin :p
Wulfkin Jun 13th 2010 6:28AM
The thing is, I'm not sure I even want heirlooms on my beloved new Goblin, I don't want the levelling process to go *too* quickly, else I'll end up skipping some content because I've outlevelled it.
Hrunt Jun 13th 2010 8:05AM
My plan is to hold off on the heirlooms until I hit Outland, at least on my first set of alts, just so I can enjoy the newer low-level content a bit more.

I kinda think they should keep the gear scaling but remove the XP bonus to address this very issue.
Fletcher Jun 13th 2010 6:34AM
This is good to know. Given that I already have the BOA armour, trinkets, gun, two Bloodied Arcanite Reapers and a Mekengineer's Chopper ready to go for my worgen warrior. :D

nice, although for my goblin and worgen I wont be using as I want to see everything changed normal once.
any other alts will get the heirloom treatment though.
stevenwoodworth Jun 13th 2010 9:05AM
I probably won't use heirloom items for my Worgen or Goblin as several people have already stated I'll want to quest through each entirely different and new zone as it is, I wouldn't even bother using them at level 80 due to the fact I'll want to experience the new higher level zones and quests for my 80s anyway. But I guess this is good news for impatient players who want to get up and raid and don't pay any damn attention to the story lines of the quest and know jack crap about lore.

You ARE kidding right.
Heirlooms on NEW Races.
Quiz: what would be the MOST frustrating job in the world?
Answer: Designing world quests in CATA.
I not only refuse to use heirlooms that give XP boosts, I also put off experience gains in my world quests and dungeon runs.
I put it on again to level the hard way in BG's.
Only then you realise what an exceptional game WOW ... WAS at launch.
These days you simply level SO fast, you don't exprerience anything anymore except the growth of the XP bar.
How exciting.
Not THAT Matt Jun 14th 2010 3:22PM
You're so tough, Bossy, all BA and stuff.
Go play a tedious SOE game, and quit whining about how WoW is "not hard enough". Also, you could try finding a date sometime, if you know what that is, even.
Just A Canuk Jun 13th 2010 9:44AM
Hmmm. Just a thought: If WoTLK heirlooms took used items from vanilla WoW, perhaps Cataclysm heirlooms will use items from TBC?
Just think... heirloom Stormherald...

I don't like this idea. Part of the fun of leveling for me is finding new gear and seeing how your character looks differently based on his equipment. After leveling an alt so many times, i understand and love heirlooms, but for Worgen and Goblins, and the brand new leveling experience that comes with Cata, I don't want shortcuts available or a homogenization of the gear. I realize this view is my own, and other people could give a crap about the "experience" I am describing, but still, it makes me shed an imaginary tear.
Nipah Jun 14th 2010 4:18AM
I feel ya, I do. And I, as others have said already, will not be using my heirlooms on my Goblin / Worgen come expac.
However, I will probably let them use the heirloom weapons I have sitting around.. at the very least my Troll Druid will be sporting a nice heirloom weapon as he prowls around as some weird, tusked cat.

I don't like the idea of having a second set of Heirlooms for 5 levels... it just doesn't seem worth it.
I kinda figure they might just scrap the 'second tier' heirlooms in favor of just allowing the current heirlooms to work after X number of months have passed and most people have already gotten their first main character to 85.
Zionanthani Jun 13th 2010 1:16PM
I agree. New heirlooms for five stinking levels? Really? Is leveling those five last levels really going to drive people nuts or something?
I mean, come on! It's FIVE levels.
Sarakin Jun 13th 2010 1:33PM
maybe the new heirlooms will work from 1-85? It's possible that they just mean you won't be able to use the old ones to blast through the new content but once you hit 85 and get some "points" you're all set
PictoKong Jun 13th 2010 3:57PM
What would be nice is to have a second set of heirloom (cause, well, for poeple without some sets you can buy maybe BC-flavored Heirloom, and for thoses, like me, who got every aviable, just make a cost that requires 85 that "upgrades" the heirloom once you get a max-level character (they could add it in a patch, like 4.1, in order to allow everyone to lvl heirllom-free from 80-85)
Musterion Jun 13th 2010 4:05PM
Hurrah, my stained shadowcraft set will have a new home my troll/worgen druid/priest :D My goblin - Gallywix - is reserved for bank-alt duty :P
alpha5099 Jun 13th 2010 4:18PM
I don't see why anyone would think they wouldn't work for new classes or races. And I really don't mind them not working for 80 to 85. When I was leveling my prot warrior alt to 80, I pretty much stripped him of all heirlooms once I hit 68 and started using Wrath gear. It probably took a little longer than strictly necessary, but I feel I had a lot more fun actually appreciating the content than barreling through it. Next time I get a character into the 60s, I may hold off on heirlooms there, as I never feel like I get any chance to enjoy Outland.
KJP Jun 13th 2010 4:23PM
I certainly had been planning all along on raising my worgen in heirlooms. The only surprise for me here was the notion that I might not have been able to.
