Cataclysm screenshot of the day
The latest Cataclysm screenshot from Blizzard is shown above, featuring another look at the new Azshara. A race track on stilts is exactly what such a scenic zone needs, don't you think?

Where we're going, we *do* need...roads....

New Engineering design: The Flux Capacitor?

Given how often the car stopped working, or the time circuits fizzled out... I'm willing to bet that Doc Brown studied similar engineering guides as we do, in-game.
Daeolt Jun 14th 2010 8:07PM
I don't mind this *too* much..
Everyone one else, and my subconscious, hates the fact that roads are popping up in medieval surroundings.
phoenixblight Jun 14th 2010 8:14PM
Warcraft has always had technology a little more advanced than medieval ages, look at gnomes and goblins. The roads in Azshara fit well with the goblins owning that area especially with their go-carts.
Sithril Jun 14th 2010 8:33PM
I think Warcraft falls under the tag of "steam-punk fantasy". Using semi-medieval general theme but having highly advanced technology on ocasional places (gnomes, goblins,Titans).
I may be wrong...
Arbolamante Jun 14th 2010 9:19PM
The technology in Azeroth raises questions. Industrial and even post-industrial technology exists but is not widely used, outside of then Gnome and Goblin dominated areas. Why? Well, in human history, we can see in various periods of Chinese and Roman Mediterranean history the existence of proto-industrial technology, but the leap to an Industrial Revolution was never made. Why not? One key reason wasthe wide availability of slaves or other forms of coerced labor. Why build machines when labor is ultra cheap and expendable? So - where are all the slaves?
Cyno01 Jun 15th 2010 12:25AM
@ Arbolamante, they have magic. Why have slaves toil in the fields when you can conjure food and water magically.
Seems like a lot of the more complex technology in azeroth is meant to emulate existing magic. Most of the engineering enchants replicate something else already in game as a spell. Parachute cloak, rocket boots, etc. Wormholes and Teleporters when mages have portals, that sort of thing.

Everyone else is bothered by roads in medieval surroundings? Speak for yourself.
Where do you get the idea that Warcraft is in a medieval setting? Maybe if you were talking about humans, but the setting can best be described as Schizo Tech:
Half the Horde is in the Iron Age
The dwarves have gunpowder and are in the Industrial Revolution
The gnomes have a strange hybrid of steam punk and nuclear fusion.
The draenei have sci-fi that's powered by magic.
Judging by what we've seen so far, it looks like the goblins are going to have the most "recognizably modern" technology that can be best described as "crazy awesome" and/or "shouldn't work but does, don't ask why."
Seriously, I would not bat an eye if I came across a goblin on a cellphone.
Etreya Jun 15th 2010 7:17AM
@Arbolamante
Where are the slaves? Check the mirror. Those shiney exclamation marks are a sure sign your masters have work for you.

You said:

I know this is not true in WoW.
But to be fair and lets not forget that theres more to WoW than just this MMO.
Warcaft, warcaft 2, WC2: through the dark portal, Warcaft 3, WC3: Frozen throne.
You know, the base of everything? Those werent THAT big of scifi etc. They were more medieval added with fun things like Guns, zeppelins and all this. Some people like me are looking at these pictures with bit of "err?" feeling because when I played those RTS games there wasnt scifi ships flying and crashing around and cars driving roads along with choppas while people jump to wormholes teleporting themselves across the worlds.
I'm not saying that I disagree. It looks decent and it might be fun. But its just wierd the direction they want to go to. If azhara was booty bay 2.0 I wouldnt mind at all and neither would anyone..mostly cos they wouldn't know they were planning HIGHWAYS. But since there IS highways people mind because it breaks little the setting of warcaft. What would WC4 be like with this direction? "Gnomish jetpack troops" and "driveby goblins in car" units like in starcaft 2? -shrug-
Newchron Jun 15th 2010 11:47AM
With conjured mage food, I imagine you'd be hungry again in less than an hour.
Sithril Jun 20th 2010 10:46PM
Fully agreed with Valt. Hard to add anything more; Kezan/Azshara take it a "bit" overboard.
Falcon6 Jun 14th 2010 8:10PM
Hiiiiighway to hell.
Nishall Jun 14th 2010 8:22PM
She's a goblin on a one-way ride!
MrJackSauce Jun 14th 2010 9:03PM
Like a bat outta hell I'll be gone when the goblin (rocket) comes!

"On a long and lonely highway, east of Winterspring.."
Finnicks Jun 15th 2010 12:13AM
On and off, off and on, all day, all night!
Soon where Azshara once stood will be a string of gas stations. Inexpensive motels. Restaurants that serve rapidly prepared food. Tire salons. Automobile dealerships. And wonderful, wonderful billboards reaching as far as the eye can see...
My god, it'll be beautiful.
Sugarnotch Jun 15th 2010 11:19AM
Lol @ Finnicks RR refrence is win.
