Football is just a game. Have you not seen the craziness that is happening with the World Cup? Humans are social* animals which mean they invest emotionally in groups in which they participate. Being part of the group is important and not hurting the group is important. People who don't get this are either immature or somewhere on the sociopath scale.
"Just a game" doesn't mean real people with real emotions aren't affected by your actions. But unfortunately modern Internet culture, especially that of 4chan, seems to exalt anti-social behaviour under the delusion that actions conducted through the medium of the Internet are less real than if done face to face.
* One of my psych professors argues that one of the main reasons for the size of human brains compared to other animals is to handle the more complex social hierarchies we construct.
