Know Your Lore: The Vrykul

They are giants sleeping in the earth. They are the children of Azeroth's formation, creations of the Titans, cursed by the malevolent power of the primordial Old Gods to decay from their once nigh immortal forms of iron and stone. They are the subjects of Ymirion, he who turned away from his gods the Titans themselves in the face of his people's degradation. And most of all, they are the forerunners of humanity in the Warcraft setting.
The origins of the vrykul we see throughout Northrend are relatively simple, and yet remarkably complicated for that. Each Vrykul now alive is either a semi constructed being made in the creation forges of Ulduar (when you enter Ulduar's Halls of Lightning you can even see an army of Iron Vrykul waiting to be 'awakened' as it were) or is descended from one so created in the distant past, when the Titan Watchers were set to guard the defeated Yogg-Saron in his prison city of Ulduar itself after the discover of the Curse of Flesh. Alongside the Aesir and Vanir giants (including giants like the Sons of Hodir) and the various Earthen and Mechagnomes, the vrykul served the Watchers of Ulduar for untold millennia until the Prime Designate Loken succumbed to corruption and became a slave of Yogg-Saron.
During the Tribunal of Ages encounter, the history of Azeroth is outlined from the Titan point of view. We learn that after the defeat of the Old Gods but at some indeterminate point before the rise of races like the night elves or trolls, Loken either directly or indirectly instigates a war between the various creations of the Titans that spans the globe, and uses this war to place the majority of 'seed races' (ie those created by the Titans, including vrykul) into stasis.
The Tribunal of Ages- Kaddrak yells: Correct. Creators neutralized parasitic threat and contained it within the host. Forge of Wills and other systems were instituted to create new Earthen. Safeguards were implemented and protectors were appointed.
- Brann Bronzebeard yells: What protectors?
- Kaddrak yells: Designations: Aesir and Vanir or in common nomenclator Storm and Earth Giants. Sentinel Loken designated supreme. Dragon Aspects appointed to monitor evolution of Azeroth.
- Brann Bronzebeard yells: Aesir and Vanir. Okay. So the Forge of Wills started to make new Earthen. But what happened to the old ones?
- Marnak yells: Additional background is relevant to your query. Following global combat between-
- Brann Bronzebeard yells: Hold everything! The Aesir and Vanir went to war? Why?
- Marnak yells: Unknown. Data suggests that impetus for global combat originated with prime designate Loken who neutralized all remaining Aesir and Vanir affecting termination of conflict. Prime designate Loken then initiated stasis of several seed races including Earthen, Giant and Vrykul at designated holding facilities.
It's interesting that even the Tribunal doesn't know why the Aesir and Vanir giants went to war. It clearly suited Loken's purposes for them to do so: perhaps it's tied into the means by which Loken managed to overwhelm the other watchers (save Thorim, who would brood atop his temple for eons, and Tyr, who is at present still unknown) and gained sole control of Ulduar, and thus free to plot his new master's freedom.
This much is clear. Alongside the Aesir and Vanir giants, the earthen and the mechagnomes, the vrykul were created by the titans, affected by the Curse of Flesh, and eventually involved in a planet spanning conflict at the manipulation of Loken that led to the majority of their kind being placed in stasis in various 'holding facilities'. It's possible that Gjalerbron was one such holding facility or had its origins there, as when adventurers from the Alliance or Horde go there they can find many vrykul in a state of suspension that they can either be awakened from or killed in. Similarly, Icecrown Glacier's Halls of the Ancestors also holds many vrykul in a kind of stasis.
At some point after this war, the vrykul living in Howling Fjord led by King Ymiron (known as the Dragonflayer Clan) were either awakened from this state or managed to avoid it to lesser or greater degree. While these vrykul were somewhat isolated from their fellows (the Dragonflayers have settlements in both the Grizzly Hills and Howling Fjord and seem to have either subjugated or allied with the Winterskorn tribe, also in Howling Fjord) they, too, ultimately suffered from the degenerative effects of the curse of flesh.
The quest Echo of Ymirion shows two vrykul parents with a child that to them seems hideously deformed, weak and ugly, and far too puny to ever be a vrykul, and players can watch their decision to defy the edict of King Ymirion and refusal to put their child to death. Instead, they choose to hide their deformed offspring somewhere where it can grow to adulthood safely. Later in the quest Anguish of Nifflevar, players watch as Ymirion turns his back on the Titans, believing the curse of flesh to come from them and not the Old Gods at all. (He doesn't actually even mention the Old Gods, which makes me wonder if this was all part of how Loken got the various creations of the Titans to make war in the first place, by convincing those cursed by the Old Gods that it was instead the Titans who had so cursed them.)
Anguish of NifflevarKing Ymiron yells: Vrykul, your king implores you to listen!
King Ymiron yells: The gods have abandoned us!
King Ymiron yells: Even now, in our darkest hour, they mock us!
King Ymiron yells: Where are the titans in our time of greatest need? Our women birth abberations - disfigured runts unable to even stand on their own! Weak and ugly... Useless...
King Ymiron yells: Ymiron has toiled. Long have I sat upon my throne and thought hard of our plight. There is only one answer... one reason...
King Ymiron yells: For who but the titans themselves could bestow such a curse? What could have such power?
King Ymiron yells: And the answer is nothing... For it is the titans that have cursed us!
King Ymiron yells: On this day all Vrykul will shed their old beliefs! We denounce our old gods! All Vrykul will pledge their allegiance to Ymiron! Ymiron will protect our noble race!
King Ymiron yells: And now my first decree upon the Vrykul! All malformed infants born of Vrykul mother and father are to be destroyed upon birth! Our blood must remain pure always! Those found in violation of Ymiron's decree will be taken to Gjalerbron for execution!
Useless...

So imagine you are one of the vrykul who has sired or given birth to one of these disfigured runts. If you don't kill your child, you yourself will be put to death in Gjalerbron alongside the slumbering bodies of your own people. What do you do?
We don't really know, but from what Thorallius the Wise and the players themselves discover, some vrykul clearly decided to save their stunted, half grown children and hide them somewhere their own people couldn't find them. It is these vrykul who are somehow the ancestors of humanity, possibly the direct ancestors of the Arathor clans that became the first human nation long after the Sundering.
We also know that the vrykul returned to stasis perhaps out of desperation to prevent the curse from further ravaging them, and that many of them, their faith in the Titans lost, eventually found a new god to follow. What's interesting in looking at how the vrykul have come to serve the Lich King is how terrified they are of what they see as the ravaging change from their primordial roots as a seed race of Titan origin through the curse of flesh to a state like that of the very humans who produced Arthas Menethil in the first place. How willing they are to let the Lich King test them, and how eager they are to stop any possibility of their race changing from what it is now by the method of being frozen forever in undeath.
We as yet don't really know how the Kvaldir, or sea vrykul, fit into this. We discussed them when talking about water elementals since they seem to have a connection to Neptulon and his kraken minions, which means that they might have turned to the elementals who once served the Old Gods in a similar way, forsaking the Titans for anyone who might be able to prevent them from turning into humans. (Kvaldir are so divorced from fleshly existence that killing one causes it to explode into seaweed and water.) It's also unclear how different the frost vrykul are from their more fleshy relatives, but Skadi serves King Ymirion in Utgarde Pinnacle so there's at least some connection through the Lich King. Yet some still serve the Titans... Thorim is still an object of veneration by the Hyldnr vrykul, for instance, and it appears new vrykul untouched by the curse were churned out by Loken in Ulduar into recent times. Arthas' vrykul can be found in the massive Utgard complex, in Gjalerbron, and throughout Jotunheim on the glacier. They also infest the wing of the Icecrown Citadel where Dreamwalker is kept prisoner.
There's a lot more yet to learn about the ancestors of humanity... how did they get from Northrend to the Eastern Kingdoms? How long ago did they leave? How many still sleep in stasis below the surface of the earth, and do they just lurk in Northrend or could they be found elsewhere?

A few questions:
- I suppose I am right in assuming there should be an (unseen, afaik) 'earthen' version of the Vrykul, right? By that I mean the pre-Flesh versions as originally seeded by the Titans. AFAIK, the Iron Vrykul created by Loken are totally new-builts, like the Iron Dwarves.
- So, theoretically, post-Lich King and post-Ymiron.. is there anything inherently evil about the vrykul? Apart from being fanatically loyal to their ancient king and their somewhat cannibalistic tendencies, I mean. Do you suppose we could be allies at some point?
Blackone Jun 16th 2010 4:27PM
Pretty sure they find humans weak so they would join them. I guess they could join the Horde if they wanted to.
tabardsrock Jun 16th 2010 4:27PM
@camaris:
to your second point, i think it's the fanatical loyalty that would prevent us from becoming allies, seeing as how we killed their king... i could see them being pretty upset about that
on the other hand, however, they might also see humans as formidable allies just /because/ of the fact that we defeated their king, and end up helping us against deathwing (maybe)
Blackone Jun 16th 2010 4:27PM
Whoops I meant to say Wouldn't join them.
IvanZephyr Jun 16th 2010 4:31PM
Earthen.
Slick Jun 16th 2010 4:31PM
It is possible that there are still some Earthen Vrykul out there still in statis... however, it seems like the Vrykul were the most affected by the Curse of Flesh. Dwarves and Gnomes at least have kept their same basic forms all this time, but Vrykul became much smaller and weaker (hence humans).
As for being Allies - I'd doubt it. While it's not impossible, they have such fear of the Curse of Flesh that they do anything they can to fight it. They've also been shown to be aggressive to just about any mortal flesh creatures due to their fear of the curse.
Matthew Rossi Jun 16th 2010 4:45PM
The current iron vrykul do appear to be created by Loken using new materials (including possibly Saronite) in the original creation forges. But we don't know if the original vrykul were more or less like them.
While it's tough to say that they're inherently evil, they are inherently xenophobic, disdainful of those they consider 'weaker' and want to keep racially pure even if it means signing up with the Lich King.
Mike Jun 16th 2010 4:52PM
I don't believe the Curse of Flesh turned the Vrykul into modern humans. I think it turned the ancient Vrykul into the modern race, a group of which travelled to the southern continent, and over time they evolved and adapted to their new environment, and the average individual size greatly decreased over many millenia.
Scooter Jun 16th 2010 5:01PM
The current Vrykul are xenophobes in the extreme sense and have been for thousands of years. It is unlikely that anything short of an ongoing unstoppable genocide by a common enemy would drive them to ally with either side. Remember the only thing a xenophobe fears/hates more than others is not being there to fear/hate them in the first place.
Eldoron Jun 16th 2010 5:05PM
why should every NPC races be allies of a faction? in the meantime, they're just mobs... I'd bet that they won't be allies, and most importantly, they'll never be a new race anytime
Eldoron Jun 16th 2010 5:11PM
Btw, it's also nice to see how our friend Mike just throws the official lore into the bin :D
Mapster Jun 16th 2010 5:24PM
@Slick
We don't know for sure that there ever existed Earthen Vrykul, it could be that there only existed Iron. I believe that the titans made it like this: Earthen (Stone dwarves), Iron Vrykul, and Mechagnomes (robotic gnomes), and that the Iron Dwarves are a new adition to the Yogg-Saron's armies, designed/created by one of Loken's leitenants (or something like that).
Draelan Jun 16th 2010 6:19PM
I don't believe Mike's assessment is ENTIRELY incorrect. At least not about the Vrykul splitting off and traveling elsewhere, forming the human race. Think about it. You've got an unknown number of Vrykul couples siring "deformed runts". (A.K.A. humans) As was pointed out in the quest line, at least some of them opted to save their children rather than put them to death. Obviously, they couldn't just take them and go toss them in the woods to fend for themselves, and it's not like they had any other sentient races to act as permanent babysitters, so at least SOME portion of these couples must have fled with their offspring. (Probably ending up in what would eventually be the Eastern Kingdoms after the sundering.)
Of course, as to whether the "curse of flesh" is the cause of the "deformities" or not is debatable. Given that there were enough children born like this that laws were made to deal with it, it would seem that it's not just a sudden, natural mutation. It would have had to be laying dormant in the vrykuls genes for generations to become so widespread. (Perhaps it was more like the blue eyes in reality. You need both parents to have the gene for it for the possibility of their children being born with blue eyes. And then, the child need to inherit the gene from both parents for it to be seen.) Or, it could be the result of some sort of curse, or exposure to radiation/other unfavorable conditions.
Adegan Jun 16th 2010 7:33PM
Do you really think the Vrykul still believe humans to be weak after they've had their bum kicked from one end of Northrend to the other?
Tabasa Jun 16th 2010 9:04PM
Regarding Vyrkul as potential allies : The official Cataclysm site for Vashjir hints at a conflict between the Kvaldir and the Naga going on. It's nothing definite, but it's possible we may see a "friendly" faction of Vykrul (even if it's only out of a grudging "enemy of my enemy" thing) with the Naga being the common enemy.
Or both may be out to kill us. *shrug*

This is just making me picture the deal that King Ymiron made with the Lich King.
(Knocking at the Great Door to the throne room of Utgarde Pinnacle)
King Ymiron: What the Gjale - (opens the door, sees the Lich King and Kelthuzad) - who let these runts in?
Svala Sorrowgrave: You.
Skadi the Ruthless: You opened the door man, slam it in their face or hear 'em.
Ingvar the Plunderer: I hear knocking!
Skadi: (breaks wind) You hear that?
King Ymiron: Shut up all of you! Little ones, you are bold to come up to my home and challenge me! But we're not your parents! We don't owe you a thing! Not a longboat, not a handout! And if you're selling something, we're not interested! Leave!
(Kelthuzad begins to whisper in the Lich King's ear, but is cut off, with the words "told you to bring the saronite elevator boots" audible)
Lich King: Greetings, your highness. Are you afraid of death?
(Rips out his sword) King Ymiron: RUALG NJA GABORR! Your death is only -
Lich King: We're already dead.
King Ymiron: -the ... what? How can you stand before me?
Svala: How can one kill that which does not live?
(Skadi whispers: Tuesday maintenance.)
Lich King: That's exactly what I've come to sell. You're a big bad mountain of a Vrykul, your highness, not afraid of the hard grip of death ...
(Sadness creeps across Ymiron's face) King Ymiron: Like mountain ... to be big ... to be hard.
Lich King: Hard?
Svala: Pshh, he's got issues, but not of death. All these Vrykul do. Take it from me.
(Skadi raises his head and glares silently. Ingvar lowers his head and mopes, silently crying. King Ymiron continues to stare skyward).
Kelthuzad: Uh, issues?
King Ymiron: All these years, becoming smaller, softer, less of a Vrykul. Cursed! Curse of flesh! Curse of tiny, flabby flesh! I want to be big and hard again! Like an iron rod!!!
(The Lich King and Kelthuzad do their hardest to choke on their laughter)
King Ymiron: IS IT FUNNY?
Lich King: (starts coughing) Dude, you got to do something about the hay in the chamber here, it's getting to our allergies (Kelthuzad imitates the Lich King's hacking as well). That, some Beano and some deodorant. But I can promise you an increased vitality ... never age a day and get your energy back ... with undeath!
King Ymiron: Undeath?
Kelthuzad: Undeath!
Lich King: Make you live long time. You'll have the stamina of a 100 men and the rockhard steadiness of rigor mortis, without the creaking! You'll have all the time in the world to polish your longboat, your highness! And Skadi, you can thrust your harpoon and ride the huffin and puffin dragon with ease!
King Ymiron and Skadi together: Mmm ...
Svala: And what will I get from this ... undeath?
Lich King: (lowers his voice, adds some style into his words): A kicking pair of boots and wings to match, for starters ... I've got a private selection for the ladies ...
(Svala purrs)
Ingvar (shouting): Will undeath make me smart?
(The Lich King looks at Kelthuzad, who gives a negative look with his eyes)
Lich King: (slyly) We'll get back to you on that.
King Ymiron: I WANT UNDEATH! I WILL BUY! WHERE DO I SIGN?
(Kelthuzad brings the paperwork - actually, a tortured ethereal - out of the aether. The documents are signed in blood, giving the Lich King the services and unquestioning support of King Ymiron, his properties and servants in exchange for eternal ... unlife.)
(Hurried footsteps) Vrykul lackey: My king, there's small people down below, building a village near our forest!
Lich King: Just on time, those Alliance dogs. Ymiron, your first task is to slaughter those insects. Don't dawdle. Storm them with dragons, dogs, and men before they dream of building a dancing gnome rogue bar and a Draenei hashish dealership, and I will reward you with a raid-level for -
Kelthuzad: (Scanning the new recruits, then mumbles at the Lich King) I forsee that won't be the case.
Lich King: (whispering) Powers that be?
Kelthuzad: (whispers back) Honestly, they suck ... and the Blizzard can't do everything.
King Ymiron: WHAT? NO RAID-LEVEL FORTRESS? I DESERVE ...
Kelthuzad: Um, your highness, F-Y-I, Loken, that Titan you really didn't like, doesn't have a raid-level fortress either. He also didn't take our package.
King Ymiron: No fortress. But Loken can die?
Lich King: Yes, he can. But one thing at a time. We're on a tight schedule here folks. But for being such a good group of customers, here's consolation, a gift to you for purchasing at this time: this necromancer, these geists, a couple of these Patchwerk clones and this elf vampire guy we picked up, let them shack downstairs, they're yours to command from this post.
Svala: (gasping at Kelseth) My, what big ... teeth ... you have!
Ingvar: I like this Prince Bigteeth! Can he chew my food?
Prince Kelseth (hisses to the Lich King): What did I do to deserve ...
Lich King: That's all for now. We'll check in on you in a few years. (whispers to Svala, making a phone symbol with his hands and winking) Call me up anytime.
