WoW Rookie: More tips, tricks and tidbits

Though I've been playing since open beta, there are still things that I stumble upon that I either didn't know or had forgotten. There are also many little conveniences that took me forever to figure out. So while these tips, tricks and tidbits say they are for rookies -- well, even long time veterans have a few holes in their knowledge of the workings of Azeroth.
Lisa tackled some tips just a couple months ago, so I've scavenged in the comments there as well as in this guest breakfast topic. I am also going to touch on some subjects that come up a lot in the WoW.com guild, <It came from the Blog>.
Built-in Talent Calculator If you, like me, have a tendency to click the wrong thing when choosing your talents, there is a way to set up a safety net. Just go to Game Menu (ESC), Interface, Features and click the Preview Talent Changes box. After that, you will be able to play with your talents a bit before accepting them.
Take a walk Whether you are participating in RP or just want to stay slow while completing an escort quest, the default key to toggle between running and walking is / on your numpad.
Run away! If you want to put your character on autorun while you chat, snack, knit or go take a break; the default key is NUMLOCK. Don't use this if you have people on autofollow or you may have an unintentional incident that will remind people of the lemmings myth.
Wash your mouth out with soap! If you would prefer not to see profanity in game, the Mature Language Filter is located in the Game Menu under Interface and then Social. Of course, misspelled profanity is plentiful and on purpose, so it only does so much.
Diamonds are not forever Putting gems in sockets is not a permanent thing. They can be replaced by just dropping the new gem over the old gem.
You don't have to be all matchy-matchy Gems don't have to match the color of the slot to work. The drawback is that you will lose any socket bonuses. However, not limiting yourself to the color of slot may allow you to stack up on stats that are of better use than the socket bonus.
Multitasking mealtimes I know it's in the in game tips and it may seem really obvious, but I think it took a year before I realized I could eat and drink at the same time.
Druid training If you are leveling all over Azeroth and are a druid, you don't have to go back to your home city for training. There are druid trainers in Moonglade, Silvermoon City and Stormwind.
Realm time Realms are scattered across the time zones (physically or virtually), but realm time can easily be viewed on the clock that is on your minimap. It even shows you the difference between the server time and your desktop time when you mouse over it.Guild commands There are a few commands that are useful to know if you are in or running a guild:
- /gquit quits the guild
- /gkick does absolutely nothing
- /gremove charactername kicks the character from the guild ( you have to have the appropriate permissions set in your rank to do this)
- /gpromote charactername promotes the character to the next rank up (you have to have the appropriate permissions and be at least 2 ranks above the character you are promoting)
- /gdemote charactername demotes the character to the next rank down (again, you have to have the appropriate permissions set in your rank to do this)
Chat channel commands One of these commands may be essential to your sanity.
- /leave chatchannelnumber leaves a chat channel. For example, you can stop reading tradechat while in major cities by typing /leave 2 and pressing enter.
- /join chatchannelname in order to join a chat channel, you must use the actual name of the channel. So type /join trade to read tradechat again.
- Rightclick on your General tab.
- Choose Create New Window.
- Enter in your new chat tab name (I use "chat" because I'm super creative like that.)
- Press Accept.
You got mail! If you have mail with multiple items in it, just shift-leftclick the letter and all of the items will move over to your inventory at once.
Corpse runs are not mandatory One of the bajillion reasons I loved WoW from the beginning was the fact that you don't have to run to your corpse to res. If your body is in a very inconvenient place, you can just stay in the graveyard, turn around and ask the Spirit Healer to res you. There are penalties that vary with level and she will tell you about them, but sometimes it's worth it. I am still haunted by the memories of multiple hour corpse recoveries after raids in EQ. /shudder
Help! My quests aren't working! Are you in a raid? There are many ways to get stuck in a raid, but you can't turn in or even collect items for non-raid quests if you are in a raid. Just rightclick on your portrait and choose Leave Party.
Please comment any of your favorite things that made you /facepalm when you discovered them. You can use your embarrassing experiences to keep others from doing the same.

There's also a druid trainer near the docks on Azuremyst Isle.
Groth Jun 16th 2010 1:49PM
Perhaps most importantly for levelling druids, set your hearthstone to where you are questing, then when you ding and can get new spells, you still have the teleport to moonglade spell.
Teleporting there and hearthing back means minimal time out of questing.
There's even a vendor inside the building the trainer stands next to, so you can empty your bags at the same time.

blizz needs to turn the preview talent changes option on by default. It pisses me off when I remake my UI and wipe out my WTF folder (which resets the setting) and do a talent change and make a mistake and go "WTF, why isn't right clicking working?", only having to fork over 50g to fix the mistake.
thebitterfig Jun 16th 2010 1:56PM
agreed. i can't tell you how many times i've messed up with it on lowbie alts i've rolled for luls when just feeling bored...
MAKE IT DEFAULT!
Ikarus Jun 16th 2010 2:18PM
I agree. However, if they turn it on by default, they need to have a message pop up when you close the talent window if you haven't pressed "learn" yet. I've had times where I place the point, but forgot to press 'learn' then closed it and went on doing whatever til I got the next talent point, then realizing I have 2 unspent talent points.
cendrekai Jun 16th 2010 1:57PM
For laptop users, to walk hit Function + 0 (zero).
Ikarus Jun 16th 2010 2:16PM
Been playing since TBC, have 7 lvl 80 characters and I didn't know about creating new chat windows til today /facepalm. But seriously, I'm still learning new stuff all the time, not major game changing things, but little details. Just found out the other day that if your flagged (on a PvE server) you can type /pvp to toggle it off (5 min duration of course) I always just clicked on my portrait to do it.

i just found that out last night! and i've been playing since vanilla. >.

Druid training If you are leveling all over Azeroth and are a druid, you don't have to go back to your home city for training. There are druid trainers in Moonglade, Silvermoon City and Stormwind.
The important one is Moonglade as you can teleport there and then HS back to wherever you're questing.
Might be worth mentioning there are Mage & Paladin trainers in Darnassus - two Draenai next to Tyrande - as a lot of people seem unaware they were added (oddly no Shaman)
Imagene Jun 16th 2010 3:23PM
Something that might not be a noob thing, but the talent preview option doesn't stay the same from character to character. If you turn it on for one, the others lack it. I have too many characters and sadly forget to turn the function on. Luckily, that first talent is usually one that you need to take in the right direction...
brian Jun 16th 2010 4:28PM
Yeah, I'm not sure why they don't make it baseline. After all, turning it off is just as easy as turning it on, but the way it is now, it's much easier to make a mistake.

The Tracker button on the mini-map (usually defaulting to find mine or herb nodes) is really amazing. It took me a while to figure out they had all these options (plus more that I can't think of):
Find Innkeeper
Find Flight Master
Find Auctioneer
Track low level quests (awesome for Loremaster)
etc.
I wish I utilized this button a lot earlier in my WoW career, would've made leveling that much easier. And I feel really stupid because the button wasn't even hidden in some interface menu, it was staring me in the face since level 1.
moink Jun 17th 2010 5:32AM
These were added in Wrath (I think, may have been some other closely related patch). So if you rolled before Wrath, no, they haven't been staring you in the face since level 1.

I made 5 tickets about not being able to complete quest objectives...
...I was waiting for an icc to start...

I'd love a list of commands for the custom chat channels. My google fu has failed me.

"For everything but /gquit, you can use the guild interface to perform these functions"
Actually, if you press o ,find your characters name in the roster, then right click, there is the option to quit guild.
Zanaji Jun 16th 2010 4:56PM
If you are horde, there are NO shaman trainers in the Eastern Kingdoms, just so you know. :(
icepyro Jun 16th 2010 7:24PM
There is one in Stonard unless they removed him recently.
Also, he can only train the spells. No dual-spec or wipe talent funny business.
I don't know.

"If you have mail with multiple items in it, just shift-leftclick the letter and all of the items will move over to your inventory at once."
I've been playing for years, and I never realized that was anything but a feature of the mail addon I use (Postal).
