Gameplanet interviews Cory Stockton and Greg Street

From the interview with Lead Content Designer Cory Stockton:
- Heroic Shadowfang Keep and Deadmines won't ship with Cataclysm. They're currently being planned for patch 4.1. Stratholme, Scholomance, and Dire Maul are high on the list of other instances they'd like to revamp.
- The "narrative flow" of a constantly-changing MMORPG is "always a problem" -- e.g., how do you send death knights to train under an Arthas who is now canonically dead? -- and they've talked a lot about how to balance the game's overall story with the smaller one each character experiences.
- The Cataclysm content patch will be the approximate size of Canada and will be delivered to your house via sherpa. OK, he didn't actually say that, but the patch will be huge, and they'll be breaking it up into several mini-patches for players' convenience.
- Expect a pre-Cataclysm event much bigger than the zombie invasion.
- There will be a new Caverns of Time instance or raid in a later patch.
- WoW's gotten complicated, and the game was initially designed with the expectation that it'd only be around for a few years.
- Removing Path of the Titans was a tough decision, but after a lot of work they asked themselves: "Why are we spending all this time on the Path system when what we really want to do is fix glyphs up?"
- There are other ideas similar to Path of the Titans (e.g. the dance studio) were a lot of work was poured into developing it and they still weren't satisfied with the result.
- They'd like to decrease players' dependence on third-party websites to get an understanding of how their class and spec works. (Speaking as an employee of one such third-party website -- hey!).
- Glyphs will be moving to a three-tier system: major, minor, and medium glyphs. Major and minor glyphs will continue to do pretty much what they do now, but "the new medium glyphs are some of the most interesting because they'll affect abilities that you don't use constantly but you do use, and they can be DPS or healing increases, but not necessarily straight-forward ones."

Heroic DM... hope it wont be as PAIN as DM north runs are (insane title)
slice_sadic Jun 17th 2010 6:13PM
Hope they just make a NEW Dire Maul( and seriously **** that night elves ruins style of place, I hate night elves building)
Ringo Flinthammer Jun 17th 2010 8:45PM
NDM was a pain? Back in the day, it was the most profitable max-level dungeon and was never particularly long to do.
And if you were working on the Insane title at 80, you should know that you only really need to kill the named ogres since, statistically speaking, they're the most likely to have the goblin's key on them. (You have, as I recall, approximately an 80 percent chance to get it off at least one of them. You can even get a second key if you free the goblin and kill the rest of the nameds.)
I am thrilled with all three of the other heroic possibilities beyond just Shadowfang and Deadmines. Now, if they'd only make Dire Maul's arena into an arena map, since the comics sort of hinge on PvP being there, even though I've never seen any there except on holidays, when carebears have to run through for achievements.

So you want a new Dire Maul, but you don't want it to be Night Elf ruin themed. I'll get right on that. I just need to finish the new lava cave Wailing Caverns and undead/Silithid Gnomeregan.

"Heroic Shadowfang Keep and Deadmines won't ship with Cataclysm."
What HAVE they finished...?!
I mean, beside revamping 70% of the World of Warcraft geography...
Oh...

Read the interviews. They pushed them to 4.1 so they could set up story in 4.0 so that they make sense in having a level 85 Heroic version. It has nothing to do with pushing back features due to time.
DarkFinch Jun 17th 2010 6:16PM
I'm sure the majority of players won't be level 85 and READY for Heroic Deadmines/SFK before the patch comes out. So what is the sense in shipping Cata with these instances? Two less things to cram onto the CD.
(cutaia) Jun 17th 2010 6:15PM
At least we'll be farming the new heroics when it ships instead of farming Deadmines. That way when they release the upgraded ones they'll feel more like a fun bonus. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they did this partly to discourage the playerbase from seeing it as lazy design (the Naxx effect, if you will).
Drakkenfyre Jun 17th 2010 6:35PM
I don't see why they need a story.
They didn't have a story for Onyxia level 80. "It's just for fun."
Why can't they just bump Deadmines up to 85, "just for fun" ?
Shakes Jun 17th 2010 6:30PM
Haha....wow don't worry Dreamstorm I can tell you were saying that in jest. :P
mcgig Jun 17th 2010 6:44PM
drakken, story = more fun then just fun. and belive the story for DM hc is a cracker
kcypher Jun 17th 2010 6:57PM
So basically we are paying to just fly around in old Azeroth. Lame. There is literally nothing new in this expansion they are simply redoing old shit and telling us to be excited for it.
Simplifying stats is not expansion worthy considering they are just going back to Vanilla WoWs stat system and ditching all the stuff that screwed it up in BC like hit rating.
Path of the titans and Guild trees were the only somewhat fresh ideas and they butchered them. Have fun in WOTLK 2.0
Bain Jun 17th 2010 7:12PM
All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
orlochavez Jun 17th 2010 7:55PM
@Mike
It actually has almost nothing to do with setting up a story. That's just the excuse for the public. My guess is it has a lot more to do with making each content patch have something for everyone. 3.2 (ToC) and 3.3 (ICC) had new 5mans along with the new raid tier. 3.1 did not. As a result, I'm sure most people who don't raid had no idea what the whole Ulduar thing was all about, nor would they have reason to. Releasing 5mans with each raid tier makes the content patches seem more well-rounded. My guess is they decided to just take 2 instances Cata was going to ship with and move them back to 4.1 to round it out.
@DarkFinch
4.1 is to Cataclysm as 3.1 is to WotLK. In other words, would you have assumed that most players would not have been level 80 and ready for heroics by the time Ulduar had come out? Player will be more than ready to run heroic instances well before teh second tier of raid content is released, or at least I damn well hope so.
@(cutaia)
I can get behind this reasoning more than any other justification, but I still feel they're padding their future content patches by holding on to already (or nearly) completed content.
Cyanea Jun 18th 2010 6:19AM
"There is literally nothing new in this expansion they are simply redoing old shit and telling us to be excited for it."
That's damn right! Nothing new, except for eight new zones, two new races, and (someone's gonna have to check my numbers) 14 dungeons and four raids on release? I mean...SHIT, what have the damn developers been doing all this time?!
jrb Jun 18th 2010 8:18AM
@Cyanea
and lets not forget changing a vast majority of the whole of eastern kingdoms and kalimdor, thousands of new quests, new battlegrounds, and new guild levelling system. Yeah, totally not worth the price of the box.
cygnus Jun 18th 2010 2:08PM
@jrb
And new music for all zones, new graphics and textures, new profession and guild leveling and guild achievements... lawl, this could have been a minor patch release
Shade Jun 17th 2010 6:11PM
Heroic Stratholme.... as if the time it takes to farm that damn
mount isn't heroic enough.
Deathcharger's Other Reins - This one eats sparkleponies!
slice_sadic Jun 17th 2010 6:13PM
Spikemoose > All mounts
Tomatketchup Jun 18th 2010 8:54AM
I wonder more how Scholomance and Stratholme HC will play out. Since they are developing a story for HC DM and SFK, it'll be interesting what will happen with the instances since they are SCOURGE-infected at the moment.
VERRRY INTERESTING.
