Gameplanet interviews Cory Stockton and Greg Street

From the interview with Lead Content Designer Cory Stockton:
- Heroic Shadowfang Keep and Deadmines won't ship with Cataclysm. They're currently being planned for patch 4.1. Stratholme, Scholomance, and Dire Maul are high on the list of other instances they'd like to revamp.
- The "narrative flow" of a constantly-changing MMORPG is "always a problem" -- e.g., how do you send death knights to train under an Arthas who is now canonically dead? -- and they've talked a lot about how to balance the game's overall story with the smaller one each character experiences.
- The Cataclysm content patch will be the approximate size of Canada and will be delivered to your house via sherpa. OK, he didn't actually say that, but the patch will be huge, and they'll be breaking it up into several mini-patches for players' convenience.
- Expect a pre-Cataclysm event much bigger than the zombie invasion.
- There will be a new Caverns of Time instance or raid in a later patch.
- WoW's gotten complicated, and the game was initially designed with the expectation that it'd only be around for a few years.
- Removing Path of the Titans was a tough decision, but after a lot of work they asked themselves: "Why are we spending all this time on the Path system when what we really want to do is fix glyphs up?"
- There are other ideas similar to Path of the Titans (e.g. the dance studio) were a lot of work was poured into developing it and they still weren't satisfied with the result.
- They'd like to decrease players' dependence on third-party websites to get an understanding of how their class and spec works. (Speaking as an employee of one such third-party website -- hey!).
- Glyphs will be moving to a three-tier system: major, minor, and medium glyphs. Major and minor glyphs will continue to do pretty much what they do now, but "the new medium glyphs are some of the most interesting because they'll affect abilities that you don't use constantly but you do use, and they can be DPS or healing increases, but not necessarily straight-forward ones."

Well, considering before the Lich King proper Kel Thuzzad was controlling undead and generally being a necromancer.
I'd imagine the folks running the show in these places are due a little more piecemeal redemption for their naughtiness etc that likely helped things/the plague along.
The head has been cut off the animal but some of it's limbs are still thrashing so to speak.

Oh... They had me at "Heroic Scholomance."
/weeps happily

I know, right? It's my favorite old world dungeon, and in my top three favorites out of all of them. Of course, this and all that I'm expecting Skywall/Abyssal Maw to be means that I will be having a very enjoyable heroic dungeoning experience come Cataclysm.
orlochavez Jun 17th 2010 8:07PM
In heroic, if you talk to one of the students in the Viewing Room, it deletes your character.
Cyanea Jun 18th 2010 6:23AM
I KNEW they were doing something with Scholo ever since they did that poll on the forums AGES ago when they asked players for their opinions of it.
I'm glad to see Scholo and Strat not getting obliterated since the Lich King is dead. I'll admit that I want to see a series of quests involving mopping up the Scourge in the Plaguelands.
ccbutch Jun 17th 2010 6:17PM
I'm wary about a change to Scholo. That is still my favorite dungeon, they got the feel to it perfectly. I understand it's outdated but a revamp could ruin one of the best 5-mans they've ever done.

Hmm. An interesting read. :P

i love that there is going to be level 85 deadmines and SFK. but i hope they are phased so that they can still be done from 18-25 like now, because between those two dungeons, the gear is amazing. and losing those gear options woud be....cataclysmic.
Drakkenfyre Jun 17th 2010 6:35PM
I don't understand why people find this so difficult.
"Right-click portrait, choose "Heroic", done."
No other instance in the game that has a heroic setting replaces the normal instance. There is no reason for a heroic version to replace the level 20 version.
kia Jun 17th 2010 7:54PM
Drakkenfyre: exactly. Heroic versions of vanilla dungeons will just be like Heroics now: a version of the instance tuned for max level players instead of the Normal level range that will drop max level loot and emblems etc. Why would Heroic SFK etc replace the Normal versions when no heroic before has done so?
zdave Jun 17th 2010 9:12PM
i guess i just got confused, since the heroic setting is 65 levels higher than the normal one.
and yes, i'm aware of how to set things to heroic. thanks for insulting my intelligence though. brightened the shit out of my day.
Drakkenfyre Jun 17th 2010 11:54PM
It wasn't meant as an insult.
But dozens and dozens of people keep asking what's going to happen to the Deadmines. They act like it's going to be deleted simply because there was going to be a heroic version. One guy even wondered if they would "put the entrance to a level 85 instance in a level 20 zone."
It's like these people don't get the fact that an instance doesn't have to be removed simply to add a heroic version of it. As if they never ran a heroic before, and realized it was simply a difficulty setting and not a complete replacement.
Your post seemed like the same thing.

This is rather late, I know.
In defense of those concerns, I present you with Naxx and Onyxia. Those are two old world places that were "redone" and cannot be done at level anymore.
They are also the only examples of something that existed prior to expansion and were redone.
All other instances that have a heroic version were shipped with the original version. As such there is no "redoing" later to make them heroic.
Those two are also raids and not 5man instances, so the word heroic has a slightly different meaning, yet still one that might not understand in today's world of convenience warcraft.
Yeah, I can see a small amount of confusion, especially from people who are not as familiar with the history of the game and look to those two as the primary examples of Blizzard "redoing" something. Please pardon their ignorance and continue to inform them that SFK and DM are not being redone the way Ony and Naxx were. It's just a heroic version being added.
Not sure if it's warranted yet, but maybe since even casuals are doing heroics these days, maybe a wow rookie on heroics and the differences between raids and 5mans other than the number of people to help stem all this confusion on cataclysm heroics?
Squatstopee Jun 17th 2010 6:28PM
Commence the slaughter of lowboes everywhere as they are summoning friends by a heroics group. Asshattery ensues...
Drakkenfyre Jun 17th 2010 6:39PM
Uh, what? You can't enter a Heroic unless you meet the level requirements. You can't summon a lowbie into any Heroic.
Tori Jun 17th 2010 6:44PM
I think they were referring to summoning stones outside of the instances. If a level 20 group is joining up to do the regular version, and an 80 group from the opposite faction is gathering there could be trouble, but I imagine they might make phasing or something to counter that situation.
Transit Jun 17th 2010 6:52PM
I am more concerned about fly-bys. "Oh look! A lowbie leveling in Thousand needles! I shall gank him and maybe camp him for a bit on my way to Uldum!"
I think people doing 5 mans will just teleport to them now. The threat from being near a summoning stone does not seem to be that much greater then any other area.
PvtDeth Jun 17th 2010 9:38PM
In case anyone's wondering, a lowbo is a lowbie hobo. Made me mad for a second because I thought he called me a lowmo.
Transit Jun 17th 2010 6:30PM
From the gameplanet interview:
Stockton: And finally, the biggest thing is that Tol Barad is actually our daily quest hub for all of Cataclysm, so you’ll see that [Isle of] Quel’Danas thing – and that’s something we really want – we really want players to conglomerate in one spot. And on PvP servers, it’s gonna be nuts!
Gameplanet: Chaos, yeah, that was great.
Stockton: Yeah, that’s what we’re looking for. A lot of people really liked that from [patch] 2.4, they remember that, so it’ll be cool to bring that back.
Did people enjoy this? Personally I hated it. I want to do my daily quests as efficiently and quickly as possible, and not have to "buddy up" to do them either. Dailys are something you do every day, and they get tedious. Having someone there to gank you while doing them was not fun.
Bedvyr Jun 17th 2010 6:33PM
This is why I play on an RP server.
Oh, it's not the only reason, but it's one of them.
