Shifting Perspectives: Aesthetics of balance druids, page 2

Casting animations
Each race usually has its own unique casting animations associated with it, further different spell sub-types also have a different animation in order to signify which archetype they belong to. Portal spells look different from damage spells which are different from healing spells. Balance druids, however, only have one casting animation as we only have a single type of spell which we can cast. Casting Starfire is the same animation as casting Wrath, save one is blue while the other is green. To a degree, this is fine; after all, most other classes, particularly warlocks and magi, often don't see a variety of casting animations either. Healers, too, are locked into one animation subset as their spell type never changes either.
Yet, for a form that is so stagnant, having some variety within our casting animations would be a nice breath of fresh air. As balance druids, we never really get to see a different casting animation save for those times when we drop form in order to heal, yet that has no correlation to Moonkin Form itself, the form we are consistently stuck it. A mage casts differently when they use Evocation instead of Arcane Missiles. Warlocks have unique summoning animations that are different from their other spells; balance druids are not afforded this variety through anything. All of our spells have exactly the same animation.
This too should change, if only because we are not afforded the same novelty that other classes get when they use their special abilities. Moonkin Form needs two unique casting animations that are split between the spell schools -- arcane magic should look different from nature magic. Although this is not a principle applied to other classes, they also have various abilities that they use throughout their lifespan which are different, Moonkin Form does not have this. The only variation that we posses is that our CC and buffing spells cause our hands to raise upwards upon completion while damaging spells throw our hands outwards; there needs to be something else there. It would only make sense that a druid would use different hand gestures when invoking the power of the stars opposed to calling upon the power of the earth when smiting their foes. It will probably never happen, yet it is a change that would make me extremely happy. I've grown tired of seeing the same animation over and over and over again with limited to no variation simply because we have no tools which offer a difference.
Spell animations
Beyond simple casting animations, how spells themselves look is highly important. Players like to see flashy spells, they make every look that much more fantastical, that much more unreal. In many ways, we do not have this either. All the way back around half-way through Black Temple, Blizzard changed the effects for quite a number of spells -- the only balance spell that was changed during this time was Moonfire. Moonfire used to be a fairly flat spell, now though, now it is anything but. The spell effect is shiny, it's different, it actually looks like it would hurt someone. For those that still remember the old Moonfire, I don't think there is any of them that could disagree that the change was for the better, yet our other spells have not followed in step.
Wrath, as a spell, has a fairly decent animation. Compared against similar spells such as Lightning Bolt and Frostbolt, it looks virtually the same. Although somewhat boring, changing Wrath isn't of major import as it at least has a visible animation; if only all of our other spells could be so lucky. Starfire is perhaps the worst offender when it comes to bland animations. Unlike most other spells, Starfire does not have a travel time, or at least it has an excessively short travel time. The animation for Starfire is so insignificantly bleh that it is often hard to notice it at all. There are benefits to this in certain terms, yet just because the spell itself doesn't have a travel time doesn't mean that it has to be boring; Moonfire, after all, doesn't have a travel time and it looks epic.
Why then cannot Starfire also be flashy? Updating Starfire to actually have a true spell effect, to really seem like the burning power of the stars raining down upon our enemies would be a vast improvement to the overall visual appeal of balance druids. We are bringing down the rage and fury of the cosmos themselves upon our foes; that should look powerful, you should see Starfire and cringe at the thought that, hey, this spell really hurts. Instead it looks as if we're pinging the mob with radar. When I cast Starfire at someone, I honestly cannot tell if they should be flinching in pain, or gazing about lackadaisically wondering what just blipped them,
Starfire isn't the only culprit of bad spell animation though, there is also Typhoon to think about. I do not know how many of you remember back in Wrath of the Lich King beta when Typhoon was first introduced, but at that time we were told that the animation for Typhoon was merely a placeholder, a stand in effect that was slated to be updated to actually look like something. Sadly, this is just another one of the many things which Blizzard never got around to doing. For however good Typhoon may be as a spell, the animation for it is atrocious; just as much as Moonkin Form is, Typhoon has been a running joke within the WoW community. The spell looks right out of Pokemon, a game noted for having excessively poor graphic effects somewhat due to the system limitations that it posses. WoW does not have those limitations, why then does Typhoon look like it comes right off an old school Game Boy?
Forgiving Blizzard for everything else that they do add into the game, but the animation for Typhoon is simply unacceptable. It isn't a Typhoon, it looks like a little wave washing up onto the beach that threatens to annoyingly soak our enemies, not wash them away with the natural fury of the seas. I demand to be scared that I may end up sinking Darkshore into the sea if I misplace a Typhoon, not wondering if I might be able to knock over some kid's sand castle.
Every week, Shifting Perspectives treks across Azeroth in pursuit of truth, beauty and insight concerning the druid class. Sometimes it finds the latter, or something good enough for government work. Whether you're a bear, cat, moonkin, tree or stuck in caster form, we've got the skinny on druid changes in patch 3.3, a look at the disappearance of the bear tank and thoughts on why you should be playing the class (or why not).

i'd be happy with typhoon animation if i could actually see it
80% of the time there is no animation at all for me or for enemy moonkins who use it.
no idea why.
as for moonkin form, they should really change it into some battle chicken style.
make it slimmer for sure.
give it a head of a chicken.
arms with feathers and short wings which grow from elbows to hands.
feet with lots of feathers
let the whole body be covered with feathers, but let the armor be seen on top of it in a bit savage way/nature/forest way - i.e. a little torn here and there etc
make them wield beautiful staves only
let them heal in the form or at least give them some %heal through dmg like aff locks and spriests can. although heal in form would be nicer
also give it some increased speed.
wish i could draw it to share with u. i got such a beautiful picture in mind.
basically similar to egyptian bird gods, but with feathers on body.

@Nex
Turn on projected textures to see it. Same as the floor rune graphic for dks death and decay and paladins consecrate.
Dreamstorm Jun 20th 2010 10:49AM
@ Kemil
I have the same problem. 80% of the time, no animation for Typhoon. This doesn't have anything to do with graphic setting, as I have eveything maxed out or activated that has an influence on my graphics.
If, apparantly, you do have the animation all the time, whenever you use it, would you care explaning or guessing how this could be possible?

Do moonkins have same cast animation for Hurricane as for Wrath/Starfire?...
Pyromelter Jun 18th 2010 6:06PM
It's similar. I just checked, and what it is, is that when you cast a starfire, you are turned a bit to the right, and then the hands come forward and the moonkin squares up to the target. When you cast Hurricane, you just have that "squared up" stance that is the same as the finishing part of starfire/wrath casting. Typhoon has that same stance.
The only different animation is for innervate, starfall, and Force of Nature, in which the moonkin makes like a "Y" like he's doing the YMCA dance.
Fox Jun 18th 2010 5:18PM
Great article. I love thinking about the "feel" of the spells, etc.
I really hope they update the spell effects for boomkins.
- What "is" Wrath? What am I actually doing when I'm casting this weird ball of green energy? If it was green lightning, that might be cool, but it doesn't make any sense as it stands. It's such an abstract spell. I suppose you are pulling energy from the Emerald Dream or something, and hurling it at your foes.
- The Moonfire moon: I find the moon they added at the top to be actually kind of distracting. In effect, it's putting an icon in the game to show me what I'm actually casting. That's like "telling" rather than "showing," and breaks immersion for me.
- What IS moonfire, anyway? It's a bolt of energy from the moon, apparently. But how does that work, exactly? How does that work when the moon is gone? How does that work when there is stuff in between the sky and my target (like, I don't know, a ceiling?)? Obviously there is some kind of connection to Elune here, and this is a magic school of night elf invention, but moonfire is such an abstract spell.
- Starfire - same deal as moonfire. It's so abstract.
- Hurricane - this spell just looks atrociously bad, especially the nearly perfectly straight lightning bolts.
Swarm, cyclone, and roots look awesome, though. :)
In general, balance would be cooler, I think if it focused on weather more. But the "weather" domain overlaps with elemental shamans, so what can ya do there? In general, it needs to evoke "nature" more than it does.
Dreamstorm Jun 20th 2010 10:54AM
I agree with your statements. Especially Insect Swarm looks neat in my opinion. It looks weird on larger bosses (i.e. Marrowgar) though, because of the 1-1 scaling of the Insects.
Perhaps Insect Swarm should deal more damage to targets with more HP?
Mob @ 100% HP: 50% damage by IS
Boss @ 100% HP: 100% damage by IS
Boss @ 50% HP: 50% damage by IS
Just something that came to my mind he other day. Might add some more diversity to our current rotation.
Eyhk Jun 18th 2010 5:26PM
Agree 100%, but not only for balance druids.
I may be greedy within the druid community since ferals did get updated form graphics after all, but compared to other classes we are still lacking so much.
Like I posted before, even hunter pets are more prominent on the battlefield and look more dangerous than a feral druid. I use my highest potential damage output cooldown, Berserk, and all I get is a tiny green circle above my head that looks nothing like this kittie is going berserk. In PVP, this may actually be a benefit since the tiny graphics are barely noticeable and the likelihood of somebody noticing and CCing is much less than Beastial Wrath, for example, where the pet grows huge and turns a fearsome red. Still.. Everytime the hunters line up with their exotic pets for a kill shot and I stand next to them looking puny in comparison I just wish Blizzard would give us maybe a fraction of the coolness that they give some random level 75 rare mob out in the middle of nowhere.
Jorges Jun 18th 2010 5:59PM
I feel the same as you do about this.
When Berserk first came, I was thinking my Cat would grow like a Hunter's Beast affected by Bestial Wrath, or my Bear would stand of two feet and start mauling like real bears do when berserked.
But no, I just got flashy red paws =/
Feral Druids are supossed to be fearsome, to be FERAL. Not a cute kitty and huge teddy bear. Same goes for our gear. I'm really tired of wearing a freaking robe. I'M A FERAL DRUID, not a caster. Leave that to Balance and Resto druids.
Sharvis Jun 18th 2010 5:27PM
Here here! I agree with everything you said. I'm always in the camp for better character graphics and animations. The moonfire update was a nice and unexpected change, let's hope for more. At the same time, I'd like official previews for something as important as a form update, namely Moonkin, if it ever happens. Spell graphic changes snuck in are fine to me and it's not something I'd need a blue post about. But when Blizzard showed off the new Feral forms, that got me stoked. I like having something to look forward to, and that's why the wishy washy response about Moonkin form thus far makes me a sad panda.
If they reuse the same Horde and Alliance Moonkin forms for Trolls and Worgen, I'll be annoyed. Blizzard doesn't like putting anything out there unless it meets their criteria and reusing forms intended for Night Elves and Tauren without customizing for the new two races is a big no no. I'm trying to be optimistic and believe Blizzard wouldn't do that, but it's hard to when there's really been no indication that there wouldn't be.
Basically I see it happening in either one of two ways. One, they reuse the current forms at the start. Or two, they have new models for all the races. I can't see a middle ground where they use the current Moonkin form and change some minor bits, putting out the same old quality graphics. That would just be a slap in the face, or for many, a hard slap on the beak.
Loopy Garou Jun 18th 2010 5:28PM
I think druids should get a minor glyph that causes them to retain their normal racial appearance in moonkin form. Those who really dislike the form can be rid of it for the cost of a glyph slot, and those who love it can still be giant chickens all they want.
Wally Jun 18th 2010 6:11PM
this this this this... the perfect solution, i would buy this glyph no matter what the cost. What you want me to give 42 jesus shards of sargeras?
I GET TO NEVER SEE A MOONKIN AGAIN???
Here you are as well as my immortal soul as a tip. Have a nice day!
neutral.anonymous.0 Jun 19th 2010 8:04AM
You have my signature for this suggestion. I would pay 10k ingame gold for this minor glyph since it would actually enable me to play PvE balance druid which I would love to but can't stomach because of that hideous form.
Zilar Jun 18th 2010 5:43PM
Personally, I would rather keep Moonkin form as it is now if they update it like they did the feral ones. The Bear form looks like a bear mount without its armor, and the cat form looks more like a kitten. In other words i would rather have the original than a messed up new one.
Pyromelter Jun 18th 2010 6:01PM
There is absolutely no way on earth you can convince me that the old tauren cat form is better than any of the new cat forms. I know it's just an opinion, buy you are just absolutely wrong. (Maybe you are referring to the pink necklace alliance cat form... but even the most prissy ally cat form is still way better than the old cat form.)
The old tauren cat form looked like some kind of mouth breathing inbred lion. My black cat form? Looks like it would rip your head off, and look stylish will doing it. :)
And I really have no idea how you can justify the "never have my mouth closed" old bear form as better than the new ones. It was just plain ugly.
ambermist Jun 18th 2010 5:43PM
I do remember the old Moonfire, and I was giggly when they changed it. I remember walking around Isle of Quel'danas (I was still resto then) popping things with Moonfire because it looked cool.
I HATE the Starfire animation. If there are more than 2 people attacking the target, it's hardly visible at all. I already knew it was bad, but it really struck me at the beginning of WotLK when a guildy asked, "Wow, a druid just hit me for a bunch of health, but I didn't even see a spell. Do they have some kind of new instant cast?" I asked him to check his combat log and see if he had been hit with Starfire. Yup.
Typhoon annoys the piss out of me. Not only is the animation kinda dumb, but it only works half the time. Is this only me? A lot of times I'll use Typhoon and not see the animation at all. It's definitely going off, I can see the damage hitting the target and the CD pops up, but I see nothing. In PvP, this might not be too big a deal, but I like to use it on heavy movement fights, and being able to see whether or not I'm shooting it in the right direction to actually hit the boss is kind of important to me.
As for Moonkin form, I don't mind BEING in the form, but I would really like to see an update. I also feel kind of cheated that every other form is getting one. The tier 10 druid armor set is terribly boring, surely they had some time left over from that to work on a new form...
Wally Jun 18th 2010 6:06PM
I find the typhoon issue happens a lot, like more than half the time. Though i've found if you jump and cast it midair the graphic has a much higher proc chance ;)
dalroi Jun 19th 2010 8:41AM
"The tier 10 druid armor set is terribly boring, surely they had some time left over from that to work on a new form..."
Quite so! I don't understand why they allowed you to customise what your characters hair and face look like and added barber shops and than subsequently hide all that in some kind of hideous gimp mask. That issue goes all the way back to the Tier 8 sets too (I recall Tier 7 was one of those tiara things - I liked that one). I agree that tier 10 is the worst of them all, though.
Nowadays I rarely see fellow druids running around without hiding their helmet - the time designing those helmets would have been better spent on the issues mentioned in the article.
ambermist Jun 19th 2010 9:30AM
I definitely hide my helm. I hate that thing so much.
I commented to my husband the other day that the T10 druid robe looks like a tie dye experiment gone wrong. OOPS, we mixed all the colors together and got mostly brown with some drab streaks...
