The Daily Quest: We heard you like pugs

Here at WoW.com, we're on a Daily Quest (which we try to do every day, honest) to bring you interesting, informative and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere. This weekend I noticed an achievement and a pet I was missing. So I pugged my heart out, and at the end of the run of pugs, I was rewarded with a pug, so I could pug when I PUG. Or something like that. Everyone's got something to say about PUGS:
This weekend I noticed an achievement and a pet I was missing. So I pugged my heart out, and at the end of the run of pugs, I was rewarded with a pug, so I could pug when I PUG. Or something like that. Everyone's got something to say about PUGS:
- Achtung Panzercow says a little randomness never hurt.
- The Wayward Initiative has some advice for pugging as DPS, and pugging as a tank, too!
- Big Bear Butt has some team talk for all players, from a tired tank.
- And for those pugging with pallies, a flowchart courtesy of I Like Bubbles regarding what to do when you are missing pally buffs.

I think we are seriously kidding ourselves if we think the kind of arsehats who ruin pug runs are also the kind of people who read posts about team talk and courtesy.
These kind of people care only about themselves and thrive on the consequence free nature of the LFD tool to act like the unpleasant antisocial dicks they are. Until there is some way to punish people for shitty behaviour it's going to continue no matter how many blog posts on being a good dps/tank/healer/human being are made about it.

Some people are asshats because they're having a bad day. Some people do asshat things out of ignorance as opposed to a poor attitude. No, those types of blogs won't get rid of the asshats... but they hopefully will at least reduce their numbers. :)
On a side note, I find it interesting that you called them "arsehats" but used the word "shitty". :)

"Arse" is a common spelling of "ass" in Australia. Maybe because that is how we pronounce the word...

OP's name is Possum: probably not American. If the OP was named opossum, I could understand the confusion.

@Darthregis New players can be taught and people having bad days get over them but I think the majority of people causing trouble in the LFD system are people who just *don't care* about the other people in the group because to them they are just a bunch of pixels.
"On a side note, I find it interesting that you called them "arsehats" but used the word "shitty". :)"
Is it? Why? I'm not sure if you're making fun of my Australian English or meant something else? It's at least thematically consistent to call someone an arse and call their behaviour shitty =)

I agree 100% with possum on this, I even think I've posted something similar in the past. These posts don't change anything, the people who need to read them don't, and the people who do read just get to sit back and say "oh, I'm so perfect, I never do any of these things!" That's probably why so many of them get written, people like reading them because they simply reassure them that they're doing everything right.
It's ridiculous how many of these types of dungeon finder etiquette posts there are, they really need to just stop, I think I've read enough for one lifetime.

@Possum
In regards to most of the jerks out there, I agree with you. Changing people's attitude will take more than just a blog post. And most of those people with a bad attitude won't bother to read stuff like that, anyway
With that said, again the hope, when writing such posts, is to at least MAYBE whittle away from some bad PuG habits OR prevent it in the first place.
Also, speaking for myself only here, part of the reason to write those blogs is to vent. :)
In regards to the arse comment, no, I wasn't making fun of your Australian English. :P Typically, in Canada, the word "arse" is used to replace "ass" so it won't be considered profanity. So, from my perspective, it seemed like you were trying to avoid using profanity and then following it up with profanity. Thematically, it was spot on. :)

"I think we are seriously kidding ourselves if we think the kind of arsehats who ruin pug runs are also the kind of people who read posts about team talk and courtesy. "
I've said this before. The people who need to read this wouldn't bother.
This is why i think wow.com readers/posters should make their own Guild.

Aaah, I was kinda confused. Let's hold hands and sing a song about the beauty of cultural difference or something ;)

NO YOUR DOING IT ALL WRONG. Its "We herd u lyk pugs!"

I really do love pugs. I can remember back in vanilla/bc how hard it was to get a group together for dungeons/quests/raids. A real PITA. I'd love to see cross server pugs for raids or at least local server pug tool for raids. Yes, I've had bad and good; but, for the most part I have a very positive attitude toward pugs.
Darthregis Jun 21st 2010 11:56PM
Yeah, the LFD system is actually pretty great. Sure, you may have to wait awhile as DPS, but you can at least do something (ie: quest, fish, etc) instead of sit around in Dalaran/Shattrah and repeatedly asking for a group.
(Odd that some people still do that, though.)

I too am a fan of pugs. They're like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. But learning to deal with different/wrong playstyles and abilities, just makes you and your ability to adapt better.
Janaan Jun 22nd 2010 3:46AM
On your server random raid finder would be cool, I don't know about cross-server, though. I don't know that I'd trust an off-server raid leader with loot master. If the RL is on your server, you can at least do something about it if they ninja, and temptation would be much less due to the bad rep you'd get on the server. But in a random group, with other servers in the mix? The effort it would take to do something about anyone who ninjas would be much greater, and consequences for ninjaing would be overall less. I suppose they could make all loot need/greed, and make master looter not an option, but still, you run into other problems there, as well.
Eresh Jun 22nd 2010 4:59AM
PUGs are like a box of chocolates, yes. A box of chocolates tampered with by a malicious fecalphiliac. You don't know what you might get, but chances are it's all just different kinds of shit.
Well, PUGs have their happy moments too, but that's just not as inviting for ridicule.

I really, REALLY liked one sentence from the "Pugging as DPS" post:
>> Learn what your tank’s AoE ability looks like and wait for it.
Despite how common sensical the idea is, I don't think I had ever given it out as advice nor really ever heard it from anyone all that often. It's a great tip for any dps, especially the non-Misdirecting hunters, pre-emptive striking melees, and what not.
Darthregis Jun 22nd 2010 10:28AM
Brokentree did an excellent post on what the various AoE abilities of each tank look like (with screenshots) as a follow up. I believe it's called, "Wait for it..."
Trid Jun 22nd 2010 7:17AM
Maybe it is just me, but I don't talk much in pugs. I say hi at the beginning, start tanking, and say "thanks for the run" at the end. It seems this is the same that everyone I run with does too, so IDK where all the "bad pugs" you guys talk about are....
baysaz Jun 22nd 2010 7:43AM
You must be playing near perfect to not come under the scrutiny of the "armchair commanders".
Trid Jun 23rd 2010 7:07AM
I do try my best, but most people don't say a word when they get a tank with almost 60k kealth unbuffed (yes, I am a druid).
