Which fights didn't it work on? You probably had an old version or a bad install; any time I've had DXE issues, it's been because something else (e.g., my combat log) was broken.
In response to the article itself:
Saying that DXE has "a little more customization" than DBM is like saying a sportscar goes "a little faster" than a bicycle. On DXE, I can turn on and off alerts for all kinds of encounter events, then customize those alerts, from screen flashes to sounds to /say and arrow displays. I can change the settings on my top (long-term) and bottom (immediate) bars independent of each other. I can build A God-Damned Pony to ride around on.
I personally switched to DXE from BW during ToGC, because it was reported to have the most accurate timers for Anub's adds' Shadow Strike (and lo, it was right on the money). Since then, I was at one point forced to use DBM for a while, and I couldn't believe how much functionality I lost. Happiest day of my raiding life was when I convinced that RL to let me start using DXE again.
DXE uber alles, I say!
