Patch 3.3.5's Out of Storage error

While some players are happily playing with the new features included in Patch 3.3.5, many others are unable to do so due to problems that cause the game to crash. Blizzard has noted this situation and is working diligently on a fix to this problem. In the meantime, a thread on the Technical Support forums addresses this issue and what players can do to make the game playable again. The issue appears to pop up as an Out of Storage error for players running World of Warcraft on a 64-bit OS. What can you do while waiting for a fix? Simple -- turn down your graphics settings. Blue poster Datth had the following suggestions to make:
Extremely low view distance settings (177 vs 1277) is more than enough to compensate for the extra memory being used in this patch by a few factors. A lot of people are able to get by with setting View Distance from max to about halfway using that alone. Using d3d9ex mode (http://f orums.worldofwarcraft .com/thread.html?topi cId=21723843232&s id=1) can shave off another ~100-200MB from what it's currently doing right now too.
Blizzard hopes to have the game fully functional for all players at any level of graphics quality soon; however, there is no ETA currently on when this fix will occur. Keep an eye on the thread in the Technical Support forums, as they are sure to post more information as they learn more about the errors.

Well, it's a foggy bug.

Considering it's a client bug, no, you can't hotfix it.
I wonder if you knew that, or are just using the opportunity to spam your site.

64 bit OS? Like my N64?
Drakkenfyre Jun 25th 2010 12:30AM
The Nintendo 64 had a 64-bit bus. The databus for the CPU was 64-bit. A 64-bit OS is different.

Someone mentioned this (or another problem that has exactly the same symptoms) being due to the WoW client being poorly programmed. Which is understandable.

The WoW client is far form being poorly programed. One of the reasons it runs on machines with far lower specs than other MMO's is that it is well programed.

It is not programmed well in terms of dealing with 64bit OSes.
At all.
Other than that, it's fine. But this is not a new issue, it's just -even- worse now.
I'm glad they're actually saying they're working on it finally though, instead of just telling people it's 'probably an addon'.
Tribunal Jun 24th 2010 10:58PM
Oh, and if this isn't dealt with (at least slightly, not saying they should release a 64-bit edition of the game though a girl can dream) before Cataclysm it will only get even worse again.
Flying is one of the biggest culprits for this bug, since you're seeing a large area of ground at a time, and moving over said ground very quickly, it 'builds up' in your memory (not a technical explanation but functional) much worse than anything else, especially since WoW doesn't have loading screens where you can 'dump' the old ground you flew over.
And with all the new flying over areas of improved graphics in Cataclysm? Nightmare.

I don't know if I'd call it poorly programmed, but I would call it poor programming. Apparently it seems no one ever thought that you could ever run with all your textures in more than 2GB of physical memory - that once you passed that you'd force VMM32 to swap with virtual, emptying out everything for you so that you could never ask for an address above 2GB and actually get one back. Any time you depend on the machine to do something for you instead of checking/coding logic around it, you're asking for trouble. I mean, we'd never need more than 2 digits to represent the year in computer code because someone would definitely replace or rewrite the code before the end of the century, right? Whoops.. Y2K.
Sure there is a limit, you can't anticipate everything, but available physical DRAM has just been constantly increasing. I would have expected Blizz to see this one coming some time ago.

It runs fine on lower end computers with all the settings down, but yes, it's very unoptimized or has a lot of memory leaks or something because it does not run as well as it should for how complex the visuals are compared to better-running games like Half-Life 2 or Bioshock.

The funny part is there's a bug like this before in star wars empire at war forces of corruption (the expansion) the original game works fine while the expansion requires a special patch installed to play if you have more than 4gb of ram on your computer.
Hivetyrant Jun 24th 2010 8:18PM
That sucks.
For those few of us that are using Eyefinity and running at about 5760x1200 already have to do those things to keep wow from hitting it's 2gig limit, now i'll have to turn everything off just to play it at that res, which means I might as well not use it at all.

I love your avatar.
Boz Jun 25th 2010 7:29AM
I'd settle for HAVING an avatar.
Hoggersbud Jun 25th 2010 11:37AM
Do you need instructions on how to post one, or are you just having problems getting it to work?
Boz Jun 25th 2010 12:44PM
These are the steps I've taken; if I've missed anything, I would be very appreciative of corrections:
Step 1 - Login
Step 2 - Click Yellow Button for drop-down menu and go to "My Settings"
Step 3 - Go to "Your Avatar"
Step 4 - Upload Avatar
Step 5 - See that the Avatar looks cool!
Step 6 - Wonder why it never appears in the WoW.com comments (I'm guessing Gremlins)
Aloix Jun 25th 2010 12:50PM
@ Boz
It (used to, the site is now updated/new/beta but try it anyway) works if you do it via Joystiq, for some reason it's buggy on wow.com.
If joystiq doesn't work, try another one of the sites (massively or smth?) after giving it a couple minutes. Also beware filesize, needs to be under 5kb I think.
Here's a link to your Joystiq profile:

@Aloix: Thank you so much for that!
Boz Jun 25th 2010 2:26PM
1 - Went to Joystiq (no login)
2 - Clicked Forgot Password
3 - Recovered Password
4 - Attempt to login: "You must set a username before logging in for the first time!"
5 - Click Register
6 - Enter information
7 - "The email you are trying to use is already on the system. Please use the recover option. If you are an existing Joystiq commenter, there is no need to re-register -- just login!"
*sigh*

Come on :P Really? It's World of Warcraft. You don't get any benefit having it displayed on 3 monitors. Why would you be using Eyefinity on it anyway?
