Raid Rx: Healing the Lich King

Welcome to the end boss. It is possible to heal through Arthas with a less than ideal composition -- my first kill with 25 players was done without the presence of any holy paladins. If your guild is still struggling with it and the issue might be from the healing side of things, maybe I can help you out here with some additional pointers. If you're not quite sure about the overall mechanics of the encounter, refer to Kinasthesia's awesome tutorial videos: Part 1 and Part 2.
I hope you're familiar with the general encounter mechanics and the strategy as outlined. I'm just going to stick to addressing any aspects that will affect you directly as the healer.
Phase 1
Put one healer on each tank, and the rest can raid heal. You can float a third healer on both tanks.Infest You'll be facing this spell for most of the encounter. Personally, I chose to have that covered by a discipline priest and a holy priest. A discipline priest gives you an extra edge by preemptively casting Power Word: Shield on specific players. If possible, assign specific groups for each priest to cover. Any players who stand in close proximity to each other for most of the encounter (such as a melee group or a healer group) should be assigned to the holy priest. Once everything is assigned, what will happen is Arthas will cast Infest, and players who have been shielded will see it fall off. Any remaining players with Infest can be rapidly covered by that holy priest, between Circle of Healing and Prayer of Healing.
With other healing classes, rapid-firing Chain Heal from a shaman or Wild Growth can just as easily cover the same mileage.
Use any healing spell at your disposal to clear Infest off your players.
Necrotic Plague Designate one player to dispel this debuff off of the affected player. If you happen to have a priest with Body and Soul, it can help out significantly (especially if your guild just started working on Arthas). Call out the name of the player who is affected by Necrotic Plague. Once they're close enough to the group of Drudge Ghouls and Shambling Horrors, cleanse the disease off of them immediately and them tell them it's safe to run back. Ideally, you don't want an Infest healer doing this. Lastly, make sure plagued players don't run in front of a Shambling Horror.

First transition phase
Set up two positions where healers can go and stand. Be sure to divide them up accordingly. For instance, I like to position a holy paladin, a resto shaman and a discipline priest on the side close to the throne. I'll then have another priest and two druids on the side that is closer to the teleporter.Raging Spirits aren't fun. If you happen to get cloned with a Raging Spirit, stop what you're doing and try to run toward a tank. There have been cases where a Raging Spirit will just destroy a healer or any player who is standing next to them. That would be proximity aggro at work, I suppose.
Tanks will periodically get silenced with Soul Shriek. Make sure that debuff is removed immediately. Otherwise, the tanks may not be able to use their abilities to pick up aggro.
Once that third Raging Spirit comes up, you'll know it'll be time to run to the center. But be careful when running back in! Ice Spheres are not fun to run into. Your fellow guildies might make fun of you for it. Trust me, I know from personal experience.

Phase 2
Now that we're all back on the central platform, this is where the real fun begins.Soul Reaper This is an instant spell and has the potential to destroy tanks. If he's geared and lucky, it is possible for a single tank to tackle Arthas all on his own. But that tank will need your help to pull it off. I don't recommend doing it that way, but it is possible to do. Keep your defensive cooldowns close and ready to go at a moment's notice.
Infest Wait a minute! Didn't we just talk about this in phase 1? Yeah, we did. To cover a ticking debuff like Infest when there isn't much stuff going on isn't a big challenge. When you start factoring in Defile and the flying death angels, that's when Infest management becomes a problem. At this point, you may wish to pull a third healer on board to help you manage the Infest load. The times that I've had trouble dealing with are when Defile and Infest kick in at the same time. Players end up going all over the place or can end up out of range. Having that third set of heals helped enormously in stabilizing the group during this delicate phase.
If you happen to get snatched up by a val'kyr, don't panic. Simply call out that you've been grabbed and that you were either tank healing or Infest healing. It is absolutely crucial that the rest of the healers know where to pick up the slack until you are freed from their grasp. Using a raid-wide defensive cooldown can help buy you extra time when any Infest healers happen to get picked up with an Infest active on the raid.
Second transition phase
This phase ends up being the same part as the first transition phase. The difference is that you have an extra Raging Spirit to deal with now. Feel free to help chip in with the DPS if think you can get away with it. Healing isn't that stressful during this stage.Phase 3
We still have Defiles and Infest to worry about. Without the threat of val'kyr, though, they're just not as fatal an issue.Harvest Soul If you have customized raid frames, make sure this debuff shows up on the list. Any player who gets targeted by this needs to have it healed right away. If they're alive after six seconds, they'll get sent down into Frostmourne. Any raid healers who aren't assigned to things like Infest or tank healing should keep a very close eye on this.
Did you get sent inside Frostmourne? All you need to do is heal Terenas. If you can interrupt the Spirit Warden when he's channeling Soul Rip on the king, you should do it. Otherwise, try to remove Soul Rip by dispelling it since it is magic. By the way, since Terenas has Light's Favor, unload your biggest healing spells on him. The more health he has, the more damage he'll unleash. Once the Warden is taken care of, you'll be knocked back up to the surface.

Once you reach the final 10%, Arthas will destroy your raid. Feel free to start nuking him with your assorted damage spells once you get resurrected. It does end up being a form of stress relief.
Good luck in getting the Lich King down! Have any additional class specific healing tips to add? Or any healing tips in general? Add them in the comments!

You forgot the most important part! Have your resto shaman self res after 10% wipe and start nuking him with lightining bolts. Then pop heroism after the raid is ressurected ftw!!!!
thebitterfig Jun 24th 2010 6:50PM
you got that wrong. the shaman should cast bloodlust (or heroism if you swing that way) immediately after using self-rez. why wait for the rest of the raid? :D
Dave Jun 25th 2010 9:35AM
Because otherwise how are you supposed to stick them with the Sated debuff? Gotta wait for everyone, except for the tricky DPS who knows your style and is waiting outside.
Anier Jun 24th 2010 3:11PM
Infest does not happen in Phase 3. I know this from experience as a bubble bot :)
Heather Jun 24th 2010 3:17PM
It's worth it to note that the Earth Elemental in P2 because Arthas has a tendency to Soul Reap the Earth Ele instead of the tank. :D We've used this to great success on normal mode.
I notice that you don't mention Vile Spirits. Moving away from these guys as quickly as possible, with DPS taking them down from the other side of the platform, is vital to P3.

Can you do this same article again but talk about 10 man's?
Our disc priest stopped playing and now the officers in our guild feel the lk is impossible because we don't have one. Can you give us any pointers on healing 10 man lk w/o a disc priest please?
Heather Jun 24th 2010 3:28PM
I would honestly recommend substituting a Resto Shaman for that Disc Priest, at least in 10 mans. Chain Heal is very, very powerful, and with the healing boost, can easily deal with Infest without a Disc Priest.
dudmeister Jun 24th 2010 3:32PM
I'm a resto druid and I cover the infest healing for my 10 man. Pre-hotting Rejuv and Wild Growth right as it casts typically covers any problems. People who get out of range can be healed quickly with a rejuv + swiftmend combo, or a NS+HT if needed. Nourish if Swiftmend is off cd to bring someone who is really low back up.
Kurly Jun 24th 2010 3:35PM
Our 10 man is doing this without a Disc priest. originally we were using 2 Holy priests and a Shaman (Our Disc priest & Holy Pally are both on out other 10 man team).
This proved to be a problem because we did not have a way to slow the Val'kyrs and were not getting them killed before killing a raid member so I switched (Holy priest) to shadow and our Boomkin switched to heals.
In our original configuration, I healed the main tank & the raid, the other priest healed the off tank, and the Shaman did raid heals and was on dispel duty in phase 1. When Infest hit I would hit group 1 with COH and group 2 with POH, then go back to group 1 with another POH if needed (usually was not with the shammy).
In Phase 2, I switched to almost pure raid healing and the other priest took both tanks. We only got to phase 3 once with this setup.
When I switch to shadow the druid pretty much took over the healing I was doing. I'm pretty well geared, but have to admit using the druid was much better for the raid healing and my mind flay worked wonders on the Val'kyrs'
We got to phase 3 but didn't last long (had a tank doing the encounter for the first time).
We hope to down him next week.

Thanks! :-)
Firestyle Jun 24th 2010 4:05PM
I've done it with a holy paladin, resto druid, and resto shaman. They just have to keep on the infest and focus heal soul reaper and soul harvest.
wittigr Jun 24th 2010 4:40PM
We run resto druid and resto shaman for normal LK kills. We are a 10 man exclusive guild so none of us are really running around in 277 gears either. I take care of infest through pre hotting and the resto shaman starts to bounce chain heals off the tank. We all stack on the melee (we don't have a hunter) except the off tank for the Shamb Horrors. Makes it short quick and to the point.
Pyromelter Jun 24th 2010 7:59PM
I'd like to second what dudmeister said. A resto druid makes a great substitution for a disc priest. A resto shaman can handle melee/tank clusters for infest, but doesn't have quite the tools to prevent infest from killing someone. For a 10man, a resto druid should be able to keep hots on everyone, and time WG for when infest hits. I've known plenty of players who have won the encounter this way.
Ideally, you'd want (for 10man) a resto druid, disc priest, and either a resto shaman or holy pally for tank heals. As much as I love holy priests, it always seems like they just don't gel well with a disc priest, or at least not as well as the other healing classes.
A holy priest might be able to pull doing infest with a combination of using renew like rejuv, and CoH like wild growth, all while PoMming the tank, but it's really not optimal.
Raging Epistaxis Jun 24th 2010 3:39PM
@transit: we're doing LK10 with a resto druid, resto shammy and holy pally.
Infest: We're generally able to get the raid healed up with a combination of Chain Lightnings, Wild Growths and a strategic single target heal or two. As the aforementioned holy pally, I time a Holy Light so it lands right after the Infest hits, and (with beacon) that tends to heal both tanks back above 90%. Then I rip off a HS and/or FoL on myself and whoever has the lowest health at that point.
We should have him down this weekend, as we're refining our phase 5 (3) strategy. Especially since they boosted the ICC buff again.
Reinhold Jun 24th 2010 4:13PM
Chain Lightnings? Holy shit!
Raging Epistaxis Jun 24th 2010 5:40PM
oops. Well, our shammy's just _that_ leet.
Obviously I don't play the shammy. and I meant Chain Heal. :-P :-)
Arhaa Jun 24th 2010 4:09PM
Infest is not cast during Phase 3
Sithril Jun 24th 2010 5:44PM
Doesn't he give you all guild invites into the Scourge if you manage to beat him down to 10% ?
palooka Jun 24th 2010 5:56PM
as a resto druid how much healing sp would be neccesary to be able to heal through this fight? im at 2900 while using the 264 resto trinket: http://www.wowhead.com/item=50454#.
Artificial Jun 24th 2010 5:55PM
I want to be that one person in the raid casting healing spells on him, yelling, "Noooo! He can be saved! There's still good in him!" Alas, game mechanics...
