The OverAchiever: The 25 most entertaining achievements, part 1

Today we'll examine the first five, with more to follow next week. In a nutshell, I think these are the achievements that every WoW players should do, if only because they showcase some of Blizzard's best, most engaging or funniest work.

It's not like I really need to tell people this, but the Grizzly Hills -- Zul'drak story line, Guru of Drakuru, concerning the decline and fall of the Drakkari empire is the stuff of greatness. I'll be returning to the Zul'drak leg of this in a future column, but the Grizzly Hills portion affords you a glimpse into the mind of a troll named Drakuru who ... well, I'm not sure it's a good idea to spoil the quest line for any of the newer players out there still leveling. Suffice it to say that Drakuru offers you some insight into the Drakkari empire's many troubles, and that's not the only thing he knows that you don't. It's among the best-executed story lines in Wrath where you belatedly realize that that nice NPC with whom you've been chatting has been several steps ahead of you the entire time and that your good intentions helped pave a fine road to hell.
The Wowhead commenter Oroleen nailed it, I think:
This quest line ... is some of the finest storytelling (Blizzard) has ever done, right up there with Bridenbrad. Drakuru remains my favorite WoW villain -- yes, above Arthas -- simply because I utterly loathed him AND pitied him AND felt guilty for his fate -- at the same time.
The only problem with this particular achievement is that many players go from their initial quests in Howling Fjord/Borean Tundra to Dragonblight, and then to Zul'drak via the small Argent Crusade camp in northeastern Dragonblight without having done the Grizzly Hills leg first. Consequently, it's not unusual for people to wind up doing the Drakuru story line out of order, which I think is a shame.

24. Critter Gitter
I had to agree with the commenters who pointed this one out; Critter Gitter is among the funniest and most screenshot-worthy achievements in the game. While it's a nuisance in the sense that you have to have leveled cooking to 400, shelled out three Dalaran Cooking Awards to a vendor for the Critter Bites recipe, and then farmed up a bunch of Chilled Meat and spices in order to pull it off, there is no part of this achievement that isn't a complete blast once you start accumulating a huge pack of friendly little animals around you.
An especially nice touch is that the recipe's effect isn't limited to Northrend critters; any critter in the game can be a temporary pet as long as you've got one of the little snacks on you. Feel like being accompanied by your own personal herd of cows in Elwynn? A flock of penguins to keep you safe while you do Argent Tournament dailies? You do that! And if you don't bother screenshotting your character once you've rounded up your little critter posse, well, I pity you for the soulless automaton you probably are.

23. On Wings of Nether
The grind to exalted with the Netherwing to achieve On Wings of Nether is made considerably easier by the lovely lore moments you'll get along the way. You start off at Hated with the faction -- the dwindling number of free Netherwing who have no real reason to trust anyone anymore -- and work yourself to Neutral with a short initial quest line that sees you battling against the evil Dragonmaw enslaving them. Once you free Karynaku, the materfamilias of the Netherwing clan, they decide that you might be the last chance for their race to decide its own destiny.
With the blessing and help of the Scryers or the Aldor in Shadowmoon Valley, you're packed off to Netherwing Ledge in the hope that you can work your way up the Dragonmaw ranks and bring the entire clan crashing down from within. The subsequent quests:
- require you to be disguised as a Dragonmaw orc, which is great fun for all those of us who don't have a male orc as a main;
- temporarily transform whatever mount you're on into a netherdrake;
- send you all over Netherwing Ledge and Outland;
- expose you to a plot containing the seeds of the Twilight dragons you'll see in Wrath;
- contain the single greatest daily this game has ever seen (The Booterang: A Cure For the Common Worthless Peon);
- and end with a set of dangerous air races and your sudden, terrifying exposure as a spy by Illidan himself.
If you're at all interested in the lore behind the Netherwing (and frankly, there's a great story behind them), I would highly recommend reading Anne Stickney's recent and excellent article Know Your Lore: The Netherwing. If you're a newer player who hasn't gotten involved with the Netherwing and wants a glimpse of the in-game quest line, I would recommend watching Netherwing: The Movie, which we featured on Moviewatch almost three years ago.
22. Shave and a Haircut
From OverAchiever: Pure Win:
Admit it: You've spent a ridiculous amount of money at the barber shop. The urge to get our characters looking as cool as possible has resulted in people returning to the shop over and over again to get the color, hair and feature combination most suited to their present gear ... Not that it lasts. I'll be back next week.
21. The Keymaster
Some of the keys The Keymaster, I concede, are not terribly fun for a new character to have to get, although the grind to Honored with the Burning Crusade factions for heroic keys is the hell of a lot easier than the Revered grind that was once necessary for them.
Barring that, there's a real sense of accomplishment in getting all of them, particularly because the keying process for Blackrock Depths, Scholomance and Dire Maul is a set of rather engaging little stories with some interesting lore. BRD's is especially notable in that the quest line is started by an NPC you have to be dead even to see -- and frankly, he's less interested in helping you than getting revenge on Fineous Darkvire. It's also considered a rite of passage for players to complete the Scarlet Monastery library and pick up the Scarlet Key from the chest behind Arcanist Doan.
Blizzard's increasingly moved away from keys being required to access dungeons and raids. As someone who experienced her share of frustration in a BC-era raiding guild tasked with "keying" people for Mount Hyjal and Black Temple, I definitely agree it's better for the game as a whole not to slap artificial (and annoying) requirements on players just to see content. However, I do kind of miss the little stories accompanying each -- whether it was jury-rigging the key to a school of dark magic on a haunted island, chasing a demon through Dire Maul, or having to hunt down Magistrate Barthilas so you could sneak into his doomed city through the back door.
If you're not yet keyed for all of these dungeons, OverAchiever ran a guide on The Keymaster last year that should still be accurate today.

I'm 100% with you on the eggs. For the rest of my life I'll suffer from a Pavlovian drool whenever I see that damn glowy egg silhouette...
But considering the nether drakes are still the best looking mounts in the game, totally worth it.
Danterius Jun 24th 2010 1:11PM
Yeah, don't worry Kassima, you're not a nut, (or at least not a unique one) :P I'm with Sicadastra on this one; I will forever be stimulated by Netherwing egg-like qualities.

Rep grinds and rare item spawns. You'll never be the same.
I was the same way with those stupid icicles that the Sons of Hodir have you find. I hated them so much, and yet wanted them so badly (the icicles, not the Sons. I only liked them for their enchants anyway...)

Back when we were raiding Naxx, I used to run around with a small legion of rats, grubs, and spiders at my side.
Good times . . . good times.

Critter bits are actually really good ways to level cooking. You just need chilled meat which should not be a problem to obtain. Anyway check the AH for critter bites. I cooked 100 of them a while back and after a month of trying to sell them (at any price) i just gave up.
And yes netherwing has its moments. But generally, I found the grind to be pretty painful. Most of the quests suck (with the exception of booterang).

I disagree about keys for raids being annoying. People put prerequisites on raiding anyway " lfm icc 5k gs link achieve" why not put it in the game so you know your raiders are at least semi intelligent? The kara key quest was the most epic thing ever.
rip Jun 24th 2010 12:37PM
I agree, even if it was a pain in the butt. At least you know people worked for it. Not just pugged heroics all day.
Draelan Jun 24th 2010 1:57PM
There are numerous problems with attunement quests. Is your raid short a healer, tonight? No problem! You've got a healer alt you can bring who's pretty well geared, and you already know all the fights, anyway... oh... what's that? You haven't completed the long-ass quest chain to attune this particular alt to the instance? Whoops! You either need to A) go do the quest chain RIGHT NOW, which may take a little while, B) Find a PuG who you know nothing about who is attuned, or C) Give up and cancel the raid.
But wait! You've got that new guy in the guild, who's proved to be a good healer in the other dungeons/lower level raids you've brought him in! ... Oh wait, he's not keyed either. (He never saw the point, since he's not part of your normal raiding team, and joined the guild to be with friends.)
The point is, attunements can be fun, but when raiding time comes and you need to fill an empty slot with a last-minute replacement, or if you want your alts to be available for raids, you realize they're a pain in the ass. Hell, I never DID finish getting the Kara key on my priest alt, though I did manage to get him close to Exalted with the Violet Eye after they made the key only required to open the door. (I started bringing him in to Kara to allow our normal healers a much-needed break from constantly running the place.)
Lars Petersson Jun 24th 2010 2:49PM
I too miss having to be attuned to HCs and raids.
There was a special feeling of achievement when I could get my first key.
It was a sense of achievement which no pop up on my screen saying "Level XX Achieved" can quite match.
I am very much a casual player, but even I think it's a shame that this simple way of getting the worst window lickers out of HCs isn't in the game anymore (For the record, I'm happy to 'carry' people who aren't well geared, as long as they are at least trying)...
@Draelan:
Good points, except that those players wouldn't be geared for Karazhan unless they had been to the HCs to get geared for Kara. And you did the key quest in the HCs, so you would do the quest chain while gearing up for Kara.
So by the time you were geared for a raid, you had plenty of chances to have done and completed the requisite attunement quests.
I can speak for vanilla WoW since I only got to end level in BC.
tl;dr: You did the attunements while gearing, so there wasn't a problem unless someone wasn't looking to raid and couldn't be bothered...
I hope Blizzard will bring back attunement requirements as I felt it was a nice part of the story...

I am so happy you included On Wings of Nether in this list. To this day, my best memories of The Burning Crusade come from getting to exalted with Netherwing and earning that AWESOME onyx nether-drake.
And sadly, I didn't take a screenshot after doing Critter Gitter because I was after the Chef title and it was one of the last ones I did, and a flock of turkeys doesn't look as impressive as a flock of penguins. I know, I have no soul; I'll make up for it, I swear.
Iirdan Jun 24th 2010 12:48PM
I always use a Critter Bite to enslave Mr. Bigglesworth.
Then I drag him into the slime tunnel before Gluth.
Hih Jun 24th 2010 12:55PM
When I first did Guru of Drakuru, I did it kind of out of order, but not completely. I had done all the Grizzly Hills quests first, but since this was before LFD, I didn't bother trying to find or put together a group for DTK. So I didn't know that he went and "betrayed" me for the LK. So when I got to Zul'Drak and started doing those quests, I ended up at the Drakuru quest chain. "That name sounds awfully familiar, but I can't quite put my finger on it. And why does that Ebon Blade guy say they've been tracking him since Grizzly Hills? I think I would have seen him if he were in Grizzly Hills thank you very much." So I finished the Zul'Drak part. I finally saw a group doing DTK, so I joined, finished the last part of the Grizzly Hills chain then and promptly went "oh god ****it."
Still, a really cool quest chain, easily one of the most interesting they've done in Wrath.

It was the day after Lil'KT killed Mr. Bigglesworth, making the rest of us very mad. We were running TOC and I decided to give the little fellow a target rich environment. I had two layers of penguins surrounding me as I confronted the noncom. Lil'KT just stared back at me, and I think he might have been making a rude gesture under his robe. Alas, no fireworks, After feasting on cat and raiders tears, Lil'KT didn't have a taste for penguins, I guess. Critter Gitter is one of my favorite moments in the game, as well as one of my favorite achievements
Helston Jun 24th 2010 1:02PM
I was once partied with someone who dinged on the BRD key quest chain. He was dead. First and probably last time I've seen someone ding and get an achievement (level 50) while dead, and not just corpse dead, ghost dead.
Lars Petersson Jun 24th 2010 2:51PM
That is a fantastic point. I'm totally gonna have to do that when my pally get to around 50...
Ian Jun 24th 2010 1:05PM
To thise who recommended it, adding the Key to Searing Gorge to the Keymaster achievement would not be a good idea considering that it's an Alliance only quest. As far as I know the only way a Horde might be able to get the key is via faction transfer.
The Dewd Jun 24th 2010 1:06PM
I bet a lot of folks have gotten Critter Glitter off penguins. It'd be interesting to see what, if any, Blizzard has on critter bite usage. I have screenshots somewhere from different toons with armies of penguins following them. Mostly because someone in my guild HATES penguins. (Hi Kad!)
Not having a miner back in vanilla made getting keyed for Scholo a pain. I have to buy thorium bars? At those prices?
Nice list so far. Can't wait to see 20-1.
nonentity Jun 24th 2010 1:10PM
Uhm.... @ the Netherwing one....
a) not "fun" if you have to do the dozens/hundreds of dailies but yeah, nowadays you might just be able to get the reputation by turning in the eggs, don't think there's much competition around anymore
b) if you honestly do this achievement for fun... DON'T DO THE LAST RACE! You don't need it to finish the reputation/get the mounts, you only get a +10% mount speed whip that doesn't work if you're over lvl 70. The last race fucking sucks! I tried dozens of times back in BC, to the point where I was flying ahead of the npc and still got hit by invisible fireballs and dismounted. That damn quest made me yell sooo much...
Recently tried it at 80, on my 310 mount (Al'ar) ... or rather wanted to... as soon as you get there they sit you down on a 280% mount, only this time you can't use the whip to increase your speed.
Damn I hate this quest.
I did a lot of quests I didn't like when I worked on Loremaster but this one.... don't think I'll ever finish it/try it again. Fuck.
Draelan Jun 24th 2010 2:05PM
I certainly can't deny the stupidity of that last race... I came close a few times on my main, but never did finish it. It just sort of drives you insane getting hit by things that, on your screen, are nowhere near you.
Aruhgulah Jun 24th 2010 6:35PM
But DAMMMMN, it feels so good when you finally whup that final flyer's butt....
