All the World's a Stage: How Cataclysm will help roleplaying

But all that being said, I'm still pretty sure there are people out there strapping on their in character personas, and doing their very best to spin some fun story lines. They're getting their creative juices and taking on the roles of their characters. I couldn't tell you how many people are still out there, but I can say I've never been unable to find some kind of RP.
But I will admit: it's getting a bit more sparse. Of course, raiders and guilds have the same problem. We're between expansions. The burnout blues are setting in. We're struggling to keep the game fun and fresh. We're trying to stay engaged. But, still. It feels like there's fewer roleplayers out there, and thus, story lines are getting harder to find.
I hold out hope. Cataclysm can help us. And here's how.
It will all be new again
This probably goes without saying, but when Cataclysm is released, vast swaths of the game are going to change. And most, if not all, of Azeroth will forever be altered. As Deathwing lays the elemental smackdown on the known world, landscapes will be torn asunder, new quests in new zones, and the whole thing will be a new enchilada.
The raw amount of new and different content will open up hundreds of thousands of new experiences. If we consider roleplay is motivated by a character's interaction with his environment, it's easy to see how tons of new interactions will be opened up. These new opportunities for interpretations and interactions are increased exponentially.
This is the most important thing Cataclysm will bring for our roleplay. The new and different content will give our characters a whole new world to explore again. While you probably won't have same wide-eyed wonder you had when you first explored Azeroth, it will still be a fresh place to experience.
Lots of new characters
Fresh blood is key to roleplay. Especially if your roleplay troupe is predicated on the idea of sitting around a bar, having drinks, and just randomly talking, then adding new characters to that mix is critical. Otherwise, all your stories, dark secrets, painful tragedies, and epic baggage will be displayed and depleted quickly, leaving you nothing to talk about.
And, besides. Goblins and Worgen. Two whole new races will bring a brand new dynamic to roleplaying. You get all the cool "getting to know you" stuff, and who knows what further factions shifts will happen as a result. Draenei are the default "big, tough brute" race right now for the Alliance, for example. When the big, furry wolf-men hit the street, will that stay the same? I can't imagine that it would. And will the displaced draenei warriors be resentful or bitter?
This kind of conflict is the stuff roleplay is made from. Embrace it, and stir that conflict into your stories.
The drums of war
I had hoped Wrath of the Lich King would be a great expansion for the war between Horde and Alliance. And while tensions have certainly increased because of Wrathgate. Wintergrasp has been engaging as Horde/Alliance conflict. However, as necessary balances have changed the game play in the faction zone, Wintergrasp has become a kind of PvP-flavored ping-pong match as much as actual war.
But in Cataclysm, Garrosh will have his day. Does anyone think that lil' Hellscream's going to take control of the Horde, and not find every possible reason to go get some war on? Garrosh isn't a spark in a powderkeg. He's a lit match, doused in lighter fluid, tossed into a powderkeg wrapped in fireworks.
The radical alterations to the lands of Azeroth will make resources finite. The people of the world will be frightened. So, do the math. Finite resources, fear among the populace, and leaders who can't trust each other. Oh yeah, war's coming. And it's going to be awesome.
A sustained, real war between the factions will fuel the vital roleplay that suffuses World of Warcraft. Front line stories, war room stories, tragedy stories. Just about every kind of story imaginable will once again echo through the forums and blogs. Hell, even Casablanca is actually a war story.
Players will be back
In the end, though, the most important thing Cataclysm will bring back to roleplay ... is all the other players. Let's be honest. It's the tail end of an expansion. If you're a raider, you've raided. Icecrown Citadel has been out for six months. It's now the summer; players have stopped logging in to the game. They're out tubing, biking, and playing with puppies.
Without these players around, the game loses a lot of charm. Even roleplaying can't keep self-sustaining interest going if there's nobody around to play with. But, when Cataclysm hits the ground, players will return to the game in groves. They'll be questing, raiding, and most importantly ... roleplaying.

I dunno about you, but RP on WrA is certainly -not- dead. Bigger influx of PVE players on the realm, sure, but RP is still not dead.

Wyrmrest Accord has an excellent roleplaying population, and I absolutely love it there. :D

naming policy non-enforcement - pushing enforcement onto the player base
...big part of why I'm no longer playing, together with the death of tight-knit server communities and the sense of being immersed in a WORLD

You can start the roleplay now by rolling a new toon (maybe a shadow priest?) and wandering around towns yelling "THE END IS NIGH, REPENT YOUR SINS OR BE JUDGED"!
Sintraedrien Jun 27th 2010 4:33PM
That sounds more like a ret pally. (Repentance or Judgement, your choice)

I was planning something similar, but with a long drawn out conspiracy involving a mad member of an influential part of one of the many races of the Alliance, trying to do something radical, because he feels it needs to be done because something is wrong with the world, etc.
It involves murder, lies, deceptions, etc. and would climax in some epic RP raid battle against something.
It probably sounds better in my head than it does on paper.

I actually did that with a druid for awhile on Twisting Nether, standing on a corner in Goldshire saying that nature is troubled, the trees and animals whisper that a sleeping evil awakens, and other vague references to Deathwing.
I drew nothing but contempt.

In a similar vein, perhaps somebody's first toon could be a lvl 1 going round looking at the devastation and yelling:
"Oh my God. I'm back. I'm home. All the time, it was... We finally really did it.
You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell! "

I'm hoping to find a more active (and possibly PST) RP realm than where I'm at currently.
That being said, I do agree with, pretty much, everything said in the post. For my Draenei main, just the fact that the world is getting reshaped because of Deathwing is new motivation for him. Easily explained by the fact that Draenei are immortal (unless killed), he witnessed the fall of Argus and the fall of Draenor, and actually has some power behind him now to try and prevent Azeroth from suffering the same fate.
Here's hoping Cataclysm comes soon for all the wonderful Role Play possibilities.

I've been playing on Sentinels for the last year and loving it. I can't speak for redside, but blueside's hopping. (Also PST realm).
Bronwyn Jun 27th 2010 6:18PM
Maybe I'm just unlucky but I have not had a "hopping" vibe for Sentinels.

On Argent Dawn, I'm a member of Agency, a guild of sometime-mercenaries... our HQ is in the SW Park District. So yeah... this is going to do some interesting stuff for our in-guild RPs.
My paladin is a native Gilnean trapped on the Eastern Kingdoms side of the wall... who will end up infected and cursed from calling the Light, finding a new... path. (DROOD!)
How the Cataclysm will affect the lives and stories of all my toons is making me think. My gnome warlock, still very childish, is going to see tragedy like none she's experienced before. My Hunter will lose her long-time companion (new pets, whee). My Dranei toons will both realize that this place they've found to call home is much more fragile than they thought...
As it is, it's currently fun to have little things happen in game that hint at what's happening. My Dranei shaman is having a hard time talking to the elemental spirits, and some of them seem to be in pain... one of the toons I have on hiatus right now has gone missing investigating rumours of a 'Cult of Neltharion'...
I do think RP is dying somewhat, but it's definitely 'burnout blues' that every aspect of the game will have at the end of an expansion cycle.

The first thing I thought when i heard the SW Park was going to be destroyed in Cata was "Where will all the RPers who use that area a lot go?"
I don't RP myself, but i am curious to know what those who do RP think of the Park being destroyed.

I think Wyrmrest Accord is amazing, even to this day. You can find a few roleplayers in just about every zone in the game it seems, every play session I go on, I run into several people playing in character while questing, walking around the Crossroads, it's quite surprising to me, all you have to do is advertise yourself with an RP mod like RSP or Myroleplay, and walk here and there, they will start popping out of the wood work. Out of all the RP servers, Wyrmrest has the highest concentration of random consistant world RP, so check it out and help to make it even more so.
If random world RP isn't your thing, and you'd rather focus on scheduled weekly events and a tight knit OOC community with highly active global channels, I would suggest Cenarion Circle, but don't expect much random world RP.

What I'm looking forward to the most:
Goblin roleplayers flushing out some of the bulk of Blood Elf players.
Alexander Jun 27th 2010 5:19PM
Any lessening of the Blood Elf population is a welcome change.
NostraThomas Jun 27th 2010 5:43PM
Worgen will take away more blood elf players than anything, I'd assume.
Darky Jun 27th 2010 6:14PM
That and tauren pallies, because the (arguably)* best class of this expansion is only available to one race, adding another race will definitely thin out the belf population.
*I'm not saying they're OP but holy pallies are almost mandatory to raid in progression nowadays.
Marcosius Jun 28th 2010 5:57AM
"lololol blod elfs suk"
That's a very old and stupid song. Please stop singing it.
Sean Riley Jun 28th 2010 5:26PM
@Marcosius
But they make up 36% of the Horde population. 36%. If you limit it to RP servers that goes up to 42%. (The source, of course, is http://www.warcraftrealms.com/census.php )
I admit, I'm not a fan of Blood Elves and haven't been since the end of Burning Crusade. And even before that, I was a fan of them in a "I need a magic fix so bad I'm pretty sure I'd murder anybody, including you, for one" strung-out junkie way than anything else. Whereas I think (?) that most RPers seem to like them in a noble, wounded heroes kind of way.
As an aside, I'd adore, adore a column on the appeal of Blood Elf RP from someone who genuinely enjoys playing them. That person is not me, and I'd like to understand that person.
