Mail access being considered for mobile app
In a recent forums thread, European CM Vaneras confirmed that in-game mail access is being considered for the armory mobile app. It is of course far from being confirmed -- but still, in theory, if it were implemented, it could be handy, allowing people on the go to transfer items between bank alts, manage consumable distribution between characters and more.
Vaneras also said that Blizzard is always researching new potential additions to their web and mobile services as well, which actually piques my interest even more. I'd personally love to see guild chat and in-game chat channels added to the mobile and web services. If I could use a messenger program to stay hooked in to my guild and my friends list even when I'm not playing, I'd be willing to throw a few extra bucks a month Blizzard's way.

Ooof, I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, as many have said, lots of potentially useful applications, like letting your GM know you're running late to raid or various other things.
On the other hand, I already play this game enough. At some point, it behooves me to stop thinking about the game, stop having access to the game, and let something else have command of my attention for a while. To have 24 hr access to the game, in some form or another, even without my computer? The next logical step seems to be the .Hack//sign approach and just get sucked into the game completely.
I'm sure this is fine for some people, but I'm definitely going to try to avoid this as much as possible if it happens.

Amen to that. I'm really not liking this direction the game seems to be taking, even if there are some positive benefits to these new features they're coming up with. I'm "plugged in" 24/7 enough as it is for work, there is no way in hell I'm letting WoW take over my life to that degree. I've already got people feeling butthurt because I refuse to add them to RealID, and that's IN the game. If I want to keep in touch with people outside of the game, those people have a million ways to contact me that don't involve WoW.
More power to anyone who would utilize this and find it useful, but I think I'm sitting this one out.

It looks like every MMO is going this way. Star Wars: The Old Republic has already announced DLC content, and they're not even in open beta yet.

Hmm. 200 remote auctions per day per character or per account? If per character, you could do some serious AH botting with remote access and the ability to mail items between characters when one ran out of auctions.

Maybe blizz can just partner with a bank like second life so i can use my gold to pay my rent.

Thanks. You gave me an early morning laugh to help start the day.

The only way they would not lose money would be if they also sold gold...which won't happen, probably ever.

I was tempted by the Remote Auctions, I am tempted by the Remote Mail, But once they add Guild chat and Real ID to the app it would be worth paying for.

I'm more interested in being able to craft outside of the game. Add that in with the AH functionality and all those mundane tasks that I do that keep me from actually playing could be done while putzing around in the real world.

Don't get me wrong I love wow and have played for 5 years, I have read and owned all of the blizzard books, comics, manga and otherwise.
I have played and owned every game they have, even lost vikings.
I have brought pets and sparkle pony's
I however 100% refuse to pay for stuff like offline mail and banking and auction house.. I log out of wow for a reason, I have been addicted as much as the next guy but this is just way going over the line of what is needed.
Everyone needs to take a break and log out, this is just promoting people to be over the top with their play time.

I'm 100% behind being able to interact with Guild chat out of game. It would make raid nights soooooo much easier if you're on standby or need to notify the raid if you can't be there.
Besides, a lot of my guildmates don't do Facebook/Twitter/AIM/etc. Convenient things are convenient.
john.burton Jun 28th 2010 3:14PM
They won't add live chat outside the game, it would make it possible to easily make addons that are controlled by programs outside the game, and they've always been against that. Oh, actually they could charge for it, so they'll probably forget what they always said and do it anyway

@MDrules
"But, I already chat with my 'real' friends outside of wow."
Bully for you, but I'm sure many people aren't on such terms with their guild. Plus, chatting with an individual person isn't quite the same as the free-for-all that is /g.
Heathee Jun 28th 2010 4:32PM
Adding features like chat is great. I just regret the Blizzard has succeeded in convincing us that we should pay extra for this stuff. I don't mind sparkle ponies but I really feel that my 15 bucks entitles me to all features of the game. They never charged us to use the Armory when it came out and if they tried we would have cried bloody murder. How did the manage to flip that on us?

@Bronwyn
SSSSHHH!!
Don't say that! Bobby Kotick will hear you!

"Blizzard is always researching new potential additions to their web and mobile services"
ie.
"Blizzard is always researching new potential star ponies"
Deflector Jun 28th 2010 9:01PM
Would pay for a service like that.

I'm just waiting for an Android version of the Mobile Armory.
