Auctioneering in Cataclysm

Here's what we know:
- All professions seem to have a new cap of 525.
- You will be able to learn the next level of crafting skills at level 75. Well, alchemy works that way, and I assume that at least the other crafting skills will be the same level. No word on gathering skills yet.
- Guild perks are programmed into the client and have been data-mined; however, the more complex leveling system has been abandoned. No precise writeup about how guilds gain perks, but I hear they still work for experience.
Now, of course, everything we know is subject to change; however, just looking at the guild changes and some of the profession work that's been done, I am starting to have thoughts about what auctioneering is going to be like in Cataclysm. For one, having a guild bank will no longer just be for storage!
Guild perks for auctioneers
Here are the perks that Auctioneers will want to gain on their guilds, assuming it's not going to cost them more than it's worth.
Working Overtime Increases the chance to gain a skill increase on trade skills by 10%. This could be huge! I can certainly see myself temporarily putting a crafting alt into my storage bank to reduce the cost of leveling professions.
Bountiful Bags Increases the quantity of materials gained from Mining, Skinning, Herbalism and Disenchanting by 15%. This is almost as huge, because over any given expansion, while I power level several professions, I am constantly disenchanting. I imagine this will continue, judging by the peek I took at the data-mined enchanting recipes.
Bartering (Rank 2) Reduces the price of items from all vendors by 10%. This is nice, but won't be a huge game-changer for me. Still, I got my start by buying cloth, making bandages and vendoring them. Assuming this works when buying and selling to NPCs, it could be great. Even if it's buying only, I've spend over 10,000g on parchment since I became a scribe. And I started late in the game and, aside from my initial research, have been eschewing the glyph market.
Mobile Banking Summons your guild bank. 1-hour cooldown. This is no game-changer, but assuming I could get it with a minimum of effort, it would allow me to take advantage of lower lag areas to do my crafting. Aside from saving a few minutes of transfer time between the bank and the mailbox/AH, however, this won't do much for us and probably won't be worth it.
If the first few levels of guild perks are really annoying for a single person to get on their own, I suspect we might see more guilds and auctioneers pairing up. Actual functioning guilds have a lot to offer auctioneers; however, the auctioneer can't simply use the guild bank as a dumping ground for storage. Still, if I had to choose between two cheap tabs worth of space and the ability to proc more mats when I disenchant, I'd probably be better off with the mats.
Preparing for the profession changes
There's a whole post in how to prepare economically for Cataclysm, but I'll limit myself to what you can do to prepare your business and cover what you can do to profit off others' businesses later. Obviously, we're going to need higher-level professions alts: 75 for alchemy (and presumably all the other crafting skills), so get your alts where they need to be before Cataclysm launches and you have better things to do. Also, if you have any profession slots on a high-level character you're planning on dropping or one that you've never used, consider prioritizing gathering skills while waiting. The single time in the life cycle of an expansion where gathering is more money per hour than auctioneering is the first week or so of an expansion. People will be paying absurd amounts of money for herbs, ore and skins. If you're tempted to just use the stock yourself, don't. Unless you really need to race to a 525 crafting skill, you're better off selling the mats you get farming the first week, and then use that money to buy double the amount when the supply starts to increase.
So what are your business plans for Cataclysm?

Hopefully I'll have my lvl80 Alts all at the cap and with a few decent recipes by Catas release :3
So I'll be preparing for grinding all the raw materials people will want for levelling their proffessions, and make myself a nice sum of gold.

only problem i see is you cant temporarily put alts into the guild the alts need to be exalted with the guild before they can use guild talents and abilitys
Delloga Jul 1st 2010 6:35PM
Is this true? Do u need to be exalted to activate those perks for you? That would suck...
Sol Jul 1st 2010 6:38PM
im pretty sure i read that you need to be exalted with the guild to use the perks to stop people from guild hopping and what not its gonna suck but it makes sence

Delloga:
The void of accountability of the "auction alt" is not intended to be encouraged in the future of WoW. The whole point of guild perks is to incentivize accountability in an effort to clean up the community.
Yes, it sucks for the purposely detatched and anonymous bank/auction alt that enables one to take part in predatory business practices with impunity. It's supposed to.
Zanathos Jul 1st 2010 7:27PM
This isn't going to be nearly enough to stop "predatory business practices" if they're profitable. They're nice perks, but none are crucial. AH alts don't need to buy stuff from vendors, they generally aren't going to be doing a lot of gathering, and if they're developed enough that the player leveled profession on them, the extra cost of skilling up without a guild isn't going to be a killer.
Basil Berntsen Jul 1st 2010 7:36PM
Also, it's not predatory. If it weren't for auctioneers, you wouldn't be able to buy a flask for your raid and a meta gem and belt buckle after it. You'd have to rely on having friends who happen to have the ability to make profession goods.
omedon666 Jul 1st 2010 7:39PM
You're, right, Zanathos, it won't "stop it", but it will make it "not optimal", and that's a step in the right direction.
They can't make people play nice, but I applaud their efforts to "make stupid hurt".

I have no problem with auction devoted alts, let me be clear, marketing in WoW is a fun and engaging minigame. My angle here is that having unaccountable unguilded "masks" for doing shady business is being downplayed through the incentivization of accountability that the guild leveling enables. If you can "look me in the eye" and swindle me, that's between you and the other people that share the tag that enables your perk bonuses... Are they cool with you swindling me? ;)
Gemini Jul 2nd 2010 1:58AM
No such thing as swindling. There's no way for me, short of hacking your account, to force you to give me gold. You choose to buy items. If they're at inflated prices, you can wait, or find a friend to craft them. You're never forced to pay outrageous prices for things.

The whole idea that there are "predatory" business practices in this game is laughable.
There isn't a housing market in WoW, (well not yet at least). And for that matter no such thing as sub-prime mortgages. (Well now there are because you can bet I'm going to try this.)
No one can lose their shirt, guild, mount, wife, kids, because they made a stupid purchase on the Auction House.
Auctioneers will never be subsidized by Blizzard, meaning "the government" isn't going to be giving hand outs to failed artisans. Complaining to Blizzard, "but we've only sold two Hogs this quarter," won't change this.
The Auction House isn't Wal-Mart, S-Mart (shop smart people), or IGA.
The Auction House is more like 7-11. So when someone says, "What did you save by using the Auction House?" Your response should be, "About 30 minutes."
If paying 40g per stack of Wool Cloth seems ridiculous, then you should go farm it yourself.
Time may be money, but that doesn't make the Auction House any more than a convenience.

I really hope it stays at 75. I have almost every profession maxed and I don't feel like grinding all my alts to 80.
Kemikalkadet Jul 1st 2010 6:56PM
Don't see why it would change. Proffesion reqs have gone up by 10 levels with each expansion, theres no reason for the req to go up by 15 levels when we're only gaining 5 levels in cataclysm.
PvtDeth Jul 2nd 2010 3:30PM
Starting with Expert proficiency it's been 20, 35, 50, 65 for crafting professions. So 15 levels each time before. BC and Wrath kept the trend already started in the original game. Previously, the info we had was that that would continue for Cataclysm with a minimum of 80 and presumably into future expansions by requiring the max of the previous expansion each time. So, this is new information and welcome news.
Magma Jul 1st 2010 6:55PM
While the gathering at the start of an expansion is a great idea, It only really works on characters that you haven't already invested actual professions into.
Alden Jul 1st 2010 6:57PM
People might want to hold off on the 70-75 grind for crafting alts.
The BC to wrath expansion, a few months before wrath dropped there was a "amount of experience required to level 60-70 has been lowered" change. If I remember rightly you needed almost 1/2 the experience for a level after 3.0.2 that you did before. Just a thought to keep in mind.
Joross Jul 1st 2010 7:24PM
just wondering...am i going to need a profession at max to start learning cata recipes, or will it be around 425 or something?
Basil Berntsen Jul 1st 2010 7:36PM
425 is what you need to train the next rank.
Joross Jul 1st 2010 7:40PM
sweet thanks, i have 5 or 6 alts with not quite maxed professions.
spamofchaz Jul 1st 2010 8:12PM
My big thing for cata appears to be Netherweave bags. For some reason, netherweave cloth has become much more plentiful on my server, allowing me to buy up tons. The price of bags has also dipped some - not much, I still sell a few ~10g, but I'm making more than I can sell. To the toon of 4 guild bank slots full.
I was about to panic until I realized how many folks would be rolling goblin alts and need bags for them.
Then I smiled my greedy goblin smile.
