Ready Check: First look at Cataclysm raids

But what we haven't seen yet is much information on raids. Our good friends over at MMO-Champion have some great information about 5-man instances, but their raid information is running a little behind so far. Of course, that's never kept us from drooling over new raid content before now, so let's not start bad habits. Let's take a look at what raid information we do have and spend a little time getting excited about the new expansion.
Bastion of Twilight
Let's go ahead and get the Twilight jokes out here. Take a moment to do that. OK, good to go? Let's talk about Grim Batol, the Bastion of Twilight.
We already know that the new raid design in Cataclysm is intended to be groups of smaller, shorter dungeons. The huge, labyrinthine raids with dozens of bosses should be firmly behind us. Raevyn's Cataclysm wiki indicates about a half-dozen bosses for most raids right now, based on the list of bosses involved with each raid's achievements.
The Grim Batol raid looks especially gorgeous to me. According to what we know right now, the fights for the Bastion of Twilight will be:
- Valiona and Theralion
- Halfus Wyrmbreaker
- Twilight Ascendant Council
- Cho'gall
- optional, nameless hard mode boss
What's really exciting about Grim Batol is that we get to fight Cho'gall! Yes, that Cho'gall. He's almost definitely going to be the final boss in the raid, which makes sense since he's one of the Twilight Hammer's head honchos. We can probably expect a heavy magic-damage fight, given the history of Cho'gall as a mage (though like all raid bosses, his melee will be tough enough to require a tank).
The only solid sounding achievements for the Bastion of Twilight are your generic "I beat this raid" and "I beat all the raids" achievements. There's no guessing what hard modes might be like, or what that hinted-at option boss might be.
But the Bastion of Twilight is only a four-boss raid. It's probably meant to be about an evening of raiding, once you have all the fights down. This is a pretty decent-sized raid, in my opinion. Judging from early screenshots, though, it's going to be a beautiful, moody instance. It's got a very purple color scheme, though, which is kind of a drag after spending time in the all-blue-all-the-time Icecrown Citadel. Still, for one night and a chance to throw down against Cho'gall, interior decorating should be the last of our concerns.

Blackwing Descent
Check out that picture up there. Dragons are dangling from the ceiling, dangling from hooks like a gutted carp. We haven't seen this level of dragon brutality since Gruul. And to make it even worse, this is probably going to be dragon-on-dragon violence!
The raid bosses of Blackwing Descent seem to be:
- Nefarian
- Magmaw
- Dark Iron Golem Council
- Maloriac
- Chimaron
- Atramedes
Nefarian is back! Of course, we can't tell what the fight is going to be like in Cataclysm. We can't even be positive of his relative positioning inside the instance; I do hope he's not the first fight, though. It seems a little anti-climatic to shout, "Oh my god, it's Nefarian!" -- only to immediately realize there's another half-dozen bad guys right behind him.
Blackwing Descent is a definite descendent of the old Blackrock raids and instances. My running fingers almost instinctively wince at the idea of running for 10 minutes after a wipe. Blizzard's not so cruel nowadays, but still. Old, painful memories die hard.
I've already pointed out the dangling dragons, but pay special attention to the blood in vats. Zone detail that strong is almost guaranteed to be involved in some fight mechanic. It's not only thematic, it makes for a nice bit of foreplay to get your raid in the mood.
In conclusion
Like I said, it's way too early to talk too much about Cataclysm raiding. What we know is slim and based mostly on flavor names and beautiful screenshots. But it does look like beautiful content, and I can't wait to get my paws on it. I'm always impressed by Blizzard's incredible content for raiding, and Cataclysm certainly looks like they're stepping it up a notch.

and the "****** was only a setback!" trend continues!
Jostin Jul 2nd 2010 11:14AM
What are you talking about it's only Ragnaros, Cthun, Onyxia, Nefaria....... damnit
Sithril Jul 2nd 2010 11:32AM
Why can't people get over the "was merely a setback" jokes? They are getting excruciatingly old now!
Qot Jul 2nd 2010 11:38AM
According to MMO, there's also an "undead Onyxia" model and there's a spell (Children of Deathwing, Nefarion and Onyxia attack 101% faster when they are together) that indicates he'll be joining the raid.
Looks like we'll be seeing an Onyxia three-peat.

Armory -> Statistics -> Total Deaths: 1459
And yet i'm still coming back for more.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
On a tangent, i can accept the folks who don't like boss re-use because they want more new and interesting characters and encounters. The ones who say, "He can't be there - i killed him in BWL 4 years ago!" are the people who baffle me. Yeah, you killed him once a week for a whole year 4 years ago. Why is it so hard for you to accept that he decided to go somewhere else after one of those deaths?
Emelie from Dunemaul Jul 2nd 2010 12:29PM
Just don't forget your Onyxia Scale Cloak. >.>
naixdra Jul 2nd 2010 12:36PM
How. Many. Times.
How many times to I have to kill that dragon?
After this kill, I'm keeping the head. I'm tired of it being given back so that more setbacks can happen.
veil Jul 2nd 2010 12:46PM
well...how many times do they have to kill YOU? the raid bosses are probably going "i've killed these 25 buggers numerous times, and they just reappear minutes later. what the shialabeouf is going on here" while the raids going "the last 50 wipes were merely a setback..."
Rawromg Jul 2nd 2010 2:18PM
This setback joke was merely a setback!
Galestrom Jul 2nd 2010 11:11AM
If Halion is any indication, we're in for some SWEET raid mechanics in Cata.
Jostin Jul 2nd 2010 11:12AM
So is Onyxia going to be a twin fight with Nefarian how will she tie into this?
Danieru Lynx Jul 2nd 2010 12:08PM
The current speculation going around is that the undead Onyxia will be the "horrifying secret" after Cho'gall at the end of Bastion of Twilight. Makes sense considering the fact that there's a room in the instance filled with black dragon eggs.
vazhkatsi Jul 2nd 2010 2:10PM
i thought the current idea was that the secret boss would be a mini cthun, since thats who cho'gall was trying to ressurect. if he's been killed in the comic or something i dont know about it.
darthbuckets Jul 2nd 2010 11:13AM
They mentioned at Blizzcon that the new Blackrock raid is accessible via flight to an opening in Nefarian's BWL throne room. That, plus ghost gryphons should make corpse runs pretty painless.

I have to say, my favorite part of all this cataclysm information is that there has been no mention of any vehicle type fights!! The devs finally listened and realized that we don't like them!!
Mutak Jul 2nd 2010 11:56AM
I like them.
I also loved Oculus. IMO the problem with Oculus was that it had too much non-dragon fighting in it. It could have been the instance you go run when you can't find a tank or a healer because anyone could ride any dragon.
I'm not saying i want every instance to be nothing but vehicle gimmicks, but i enjoyed Malygos, Flame Leviathan, and even the jousting part of ToC. If they appear with that sort of frequency and variety in Cataclysm i won't complain.
theRaptor Jul 2nd 2010 12:36PM
That's the way people vote someone down for having a differing opinion!
Tokhand Jul 2nd 2010 12:47PM
I don't mind Oculus as the vehicles were there mostly for transportation. The encounter with Eregos, in terms of what each dragon did, only got ... problematic when grouped with people who didn't know what in the world was going on or with achievement GOGOGOGOGO-people. Mostly, the drakes were mixes of classes into a general archetype of a Role to play. It was annoying to learn but after you know the basics, it was simple and different and fun to fly on the other drakes, if only to try a different role for a few minutes. The other bosses went from very basic spank & tank to quick and clean but you need to pay attention and hey new guy learn stay out of the creeping ice and giant explosion.
Malygos on the other hand is not fun. That single drake to use needs more or less perfect precision and communication between a raid, with one place in Northrend to practice (high up in the Coldara) as well as everyone doing every role and if there is lag, congratulations you are dead and a raid usually shares a lag-spike so now everyone is dead.
Avan Jul 2nd 2010 1:09PM
I can tolerate a vehicle fight if it's done well. Flame Leviathan and Eregos come to mind with that. These two fights are great because you can go in with virtually any composition and down the boss, and the different mechanics/roles between vehicles keeps it interesting. On that note, I wouldn't consider Malygos (phase 3, obv) a well-done vehicle fight as the only vehicle is a red drake; there is very little diversity between the roles (healing and dps) which leaves uninteresting mechanics to pick up the slack.
That said, I would not consider the run leading up to FL well done, and neither is getting around Oculus on drakes. The Iron Gauntlet in FL suffers from "ugh, this is tedious and boring, AFK" syndrome, while Oculus suffers from "why bother having drakes until Eregos" syndrome.
As for jousting in ToC... I'm a bit conflicted. The Defend/Shield Breaker mechanic makes it interesting because you can decide how to balance your offensive/defensive capability. The combination of strafing/charging/lancing to deal a lot of damage in a short time is also interesting, as it lets better players get through the encounter much faster. The only drawbacks to jousting are how NPCs can both charge and throw the breaker at the same time (should be limited by cooldown, like it is for players), how NPCs can throw the breaker behind them, and how the vehicles don't turn on a dime like our similarly-sized ground mounts can. Oh, and I don't like how the NPCs can hit you when you're trampled down on the ground, but all you can do to them is trample and run off. Laaaaame.

There were also dangling dragons and vats of blood in Blackwing Lair. And, there were dragons on spikey slabs being drained of blood. Cool place.
