The Light and How to Swing It: Retribution and protection paladins in the Cataclysm beta

It's here! Cataclysm has moved from the alpha stage into the closed beta stage. The non-disclosure agreement is no longer in effect and all of the news sites are going crazy with information overload. At first glance, not much has changed, but a lot of little things have been tweaked and I have a feeling a lot more changes are in store for the paladin class throughout the course of the beta. Some things, like the Guardian of Ancient Kings that I used a reader screenshot to fake above, just don't appear to be coded yet (and with its complexity, it will probably be a while).
Speaking of which, if anyone wants to show up in the column, just send screenshots to gregg@wow.com and I just might be able to make that dream come true.
This is a quick summary to get you up to speed with some of the more major changes. The level at which almost all abilities can be obtained have changed, but the talent trees themselves are pretty much in the same shape, but with talents tweaked in a lot of cases.
Changes to existing abilities
Divine Intervention Gone! That's right, when you and some random DPS are the only two left and Ardent Defender has already gone off, that last chance to save yourself repair costs is gone. No news yet as to the exact reason, but we no longer have the wipe prevention (after all, that random DPS might be a druid, priest, shaman, paladin or engineer). We also don't know if we're going to receive something in return at the moment or not.
Blessing of Wisdom Gone! This has been rolled into Blessing of Might. However, there is still a talent for Improved Blessing of Wisdom in the holy tree right now, but that could be on the list of things to disappear.
All Greater Blessings Gone! All blessings now work as both a singular and greater blessing, and instead of casting them class by class, they're now raid-wide. Oh, and they also last a full hour like all of the other raid buffs.
Blessing of Might Adds 10% attack power and a small amount of MP5 when you get it, but likely scales with level. It has also been shifted all the way up to level 56 instead of level 4. Improved Blessing of Might still exists in the retribution tree, which isn't in sync with Blizzard's claim to be removing talents that buff buffs, but we're seeing a lot of that in talents.
Blessing of Kings Now the same as the revamp of Mark of the Wild, which are both obtained at level 30.
Blessing of Sanctuary Gone! Well, kinda. Blessing of Sanctuary is now just a passive talent instead of an ability. It still reduces damage by 3% and gives mana return on dodges, parries and blocks. The upside is that you can use the revised Blessing of Kings just like everyone else instead of needing to do Sanctuary separately.
Resistance Aura All of the resistance auras have been rolled into a single one to cover everything. This will knock two buttons off of our aura bar and make it easier to just assign someone to cover 'resistances' for the raid.
Holy Shield This is a very poorly worded talent. It decreases the critical strike chance of incoming melee hits by 6% passively at all times if you have this talent, thus getting rid of the need for defense rating. Completely separate from that, it's a talented ability that does all of the things that it always did. One note is that during the class previews, we were told that the charges on the ability were going to disappear, but that doesn't seem to be the case at the moment. This could possibly be one of those things they haven't gotten around to tweaking yet, but we've yet to see.
Crusader Strike We finally have another baseline, early-on melee attack ability! This is something we've been sort of lacking on as a melee class in general. Against solo targets, this will probably replace Hammer of the Righteous as protection and will help the overall boredom of leveling a young paladin in general. Taking its place in the retribution tree is Improved Crusader Strike, giving ret a damage boost on the skill.
New abilities
New Mounts There are new paladin mounts for draenei and tauren. Since they're both larger races and sort of look silly riding horses, they're getting paladin themed versions of their racial mounts. Everyone else gets to keep the existing pally ponies.
Divine Light This is going to be a new healing spell for paladins. First off, it appears unfinished and other than the obscenely high mana cost, it just duplicates Holy Light currently. This is likely something that we'll never use while tanking, but it could be helpful between things while soloing at lower levels. Still no real details on what the level we'll get it at, as we can presume that it's just filler right now.
Healing Hands Imagine something like Wild Growth but always centered on you. This is going to be an instant-cast, but according to current numbers, it will have a very high casting cost. But, if you're able to keep as unlimited mana during intense fights as you can on live realms, this would be a great way to help out yourself and your healers.
Missing in action
Guardian of the Ancient Kings This was a new skill mentioned in the class previews a while back. Currently, the level cap on the beta realms is 82, which means that this level 85 ability wouldn't even be available for testing were it in. As something that would require its own new art for a guardian creature to help the paladin, this will probably take some time. There is also the logic to do different things depending on the spec of the paladin that summons it. Overall, we'll likely not see this for a month or two if we're lucky.
Blinding Shield The spell appears to be in game but not attached to the paladin class yet. Also, this ability has a short cast time, which was supposed to have talents in the protection tree to reduce it down to an instant-cast, but those features also don't appear to be in yet. Essentially, not yet implemented (NYI).
Baseline Holy Shock This idea might have just been scrapped. Holy Shock, a 31-point talent in the holy tree was supposed to follow suit with Crusader Strike and make itself available to all paladins. However, as it stands, it is still sitting square in the middle of the holy tree. This was supposed to offer an instant healing ability for retribution and protection to make use of while leveling, as well as taking full advantage of its offensive capabilities.

Wait ... wait .... so the Spacegoats and Stumpies get to keep their warhorses/chargers, but we Light-Blesséd Humans can't get their versions? Not fair :(
Matthew Rossi Jul 2nd 2010 3:14PM
Maybe it's cause you call them spacegoats and stumpies.
Josin Jul 2nd 2010 3:15PM
That's not what he said. He said they get new ones. Everyone else keeps the old ones.
elstor Jul 2nd 2010 3:22PM
No love for dwarf paladins, I find this to be the most unfair part- they deserve rams!
Tribunal Jul 2nd 2010 3:27PM
I am a Spacegoat and I want to keep my pony.
I freaking hate the dumb Elephants. I was so happy to be a Paladin and not have to ride the dumb Elephant.
I'll also miss my faithful charger friend who carried me around for -so long-.

Trade you my draenei's pally-elekk for your pally-horse... I really dislike the elekk model and every draenei I've leveled to 80 has abandoned elekks the moment they could (pally never used it, hunter went nightsaber, and shammy went ram). I've already picked back up on the tournament quests to get the pally vendor mount from there but I'll miss the blue and gold horse. :-( Almost enough to get me to consider a race change eventually, depending on how racials shake out.

I've gotta agree with Tribunal. The pony was a factor in my choosing a Draenei Paladin--I liked that I wouldn't have to grind rep to get something not-an-elekk. I really hope they offer some way (medium glyph?) to allow us to keep our ponies. For that matter, the same or similar glyph could give human pallies the elekk if they really wanted it.
Or maybe treat it like the other mounts... Once you reach exalted with another paladin race, you gain access to their charger.

Jeez, you people can't take a joke, can ya? Lighten up, Uther.
I just want my own Palekk and Retram. Is that so wrong?
Mattimus Jul 2nd 2010 9:33PM
If you still want a Horse (assuming they actually do get rid of the old ones for Draenei), you can still get the Argent Charger.
Meg Jul 3rd 2010 1:47AM
I'm totally thrilled - the models look great. Even the kodo one, and I usually hate kodos. Definitely changing my belf pally to tauren now. :)
RetPallyJil Jul 4th 2010 2:28PM
You people DO know that Draenei and Dwarves don't exist, right?
Just in case, let me get all of this out of the way:
Na'vi smell bad
Gallifreyans are smug jackasses
Vulcans dress badly
And hobbits have disgusting, yellow tobacco teeth.
Might as well get all the imaginary people mad at me.
Decius Jul 2nd 2010 3:15PM
Hope they're not softening us out. Loosing wisdom is inconvenient as I have low regen.
shkss Jul 2nd 2010 3:21PM
No you have misunderstood. Blessing of Wisdom has been added into Blessing of Might. So you now get the mana regen AS WELL AS the attack power bonus in one blessing.
They just combined 2 blessings into 1.
Sidfish Jul 2nd 2010 4:43PM
I'm a little bitter they made pallys go an entire expansion without implementing these changes to blessings.
I remember shortly after wotlk was released there was plenty of noise being made about Sanc being a buff rather than being passive. They didn't want to change it (I don't recall the reason) thus forcing us to buff 10 min kings to the ret/holy pally in many circumstances making buffing that much more annoying.
Glad it's getting fixed. /rant
Ultralord Jul 2nd 2010 3:16PM
NO Divine Intervention! Ridiculous....
meestertuba Jul 2nd 2010 4:26PM
Totally agree.
No more suicidal healers.
No more playing dead with hunters.
No more avoiding repair bills on wipes.
This sucks.
g2g591 Jul 2nd 2010 4:47PM
Save DI ! I like having a unique way to save repair bills :/
uncaringbear Jul 2nd 2010 7:40PM
I will be kind of sad to see DI go. Like Battle Rez, it's one of those class-unique talents that make playing our toons a little bit more fun. I'm sure more than a few of us have had some chuckles using DI outside of recommended operating procedures :)
McRaider Jul 4th 2010 6:32AM
This is horrible... First they destroy bubble/hs and then they take away DI. I'm annoyingly starting to feel like I want to change my main in cataclysm to some of my other toons :
Awwjwah Jul 2nd 2010 3:19PM
I'm more upset that those with hooves get racial mounts but Dwarves and Belf's don't. At least Belf's look right on the horses due to their size. Dwarfs look just as wrong as the other two because they are small.
I am glad that crusader is going baseline and hope that holy shock still will too. Buff's being modified is awesome in my mind and I am glad that might and wisdom are now one and are based upon the targets AP.
Is the warriors shout changing to not over write this?
