Breakfast Topic: Are you in or out

For those that have been absent the past few days -- the Cataclysm beta is now running, and invites are going out. Expect the number of kooky emails telling you that you've gotten in and that you need to log in and give your account information to a strange website to go way, way up. But how do you tell what's a real beta invite and what isn't? Having been through the process myself, there is a really, really easy way to find out.
Don't check your email. Instead, go to Battle.net and log in to your account. If you don't want to go through the Battle.net site, you can also go to the official World of Warcraft website and click on "Manage Account" to log in there. Once you're on your account page, click "Home" in the upper left of your screen to go to your home page. You'll see a section labeled "Manage My Games" there for your perusal. Do you see an icon with the Cataclysm logo? Congratulations, you're in the beta! If not, you aren't in the beta yet -- keep checking back every now and again to see if the status changes.
If you receive an email from Blizzard, no matter how convincing that email may look, don't click the links in the email. Instead log in using one of the two methods above to verify whether or not the client is there first. As scammers and keyloggers get more and more clever, it's necessary to take a few extra steps to verify what's actually going on. So did you make the beta? Are you in, or still waiting? I have a few friends that have no interest in even seeing what the beta has to offer -- they'd rather wait till release and experience everything fresh and new as a surprise. Do you fit under that category? And most importantly -- goblin or worgen?

Remember this is just a opinion;
For Starcraft 2 two of my friends got the beta invite for it on the first wave, now 2 of my other friends and me dint get it.
I did play the beta on the unknown wave after I had upgraded my computer prefrences to Xps m1530 with custom hardware.
Cataclysm Beta is announced and they both get it, 2 of my other friends and me dont get it.
I started to notice something, they both had a alienware laptops, both of them got it at the same time for above 2000 i remember. Now the other 3 of us have home computers, i also have a xps.
Now If u ask me blizzard only gives invite to people with supergood computers.
I can garuntee u if I upgrade my computer prefrences to the xps, ill get the inv.
SO blizz if this is true WTF.
Extra Info: We all made our accounts at about the same time in November 2009. WE all used to play other p.c. games, then suddenly switched to wow.
Remember its just a opinion.

@ Blizzard Info Dude:
I don't think that is true at all man. No offense. I received a Starcraft 2 Beta invite. My computer is not top of the line. I'm still playing on a P4 2.80Ghz, with 2Gigs of RAM, a Radeon x1650 Pro Agp slot card, and Windows XP SP3. (Which I was a little surprised that it would run as good as it did).
Granted, I didn't receive the Beta invite on the first wave. I received mine about a month and a half after wards.
So it could just be, they go by other means. I'm sure they do have a particular process, when picking participates. I'm pretty sure with all beta testing, every company wants to test a wide range of computer hardware set ups. They wouldn't just single out a group of particular setups like that. Especially if those computers were special name brands like Alienware. Just saying.
On that note, I wouldn't hold your breath on getting an invite. Hell I remember when Wrath was in beta. I didn't get anything. I was lucky enough to get into the Starcraft 2 Beta.

It is indeed a fact that blizzard looks at computer specs when handing out the beta, but they hand it out to specific groups. First they give keys to people both on low end machines and high end machines. They next look at what brand each person is using to make sure that the game runs properly on all different types of machines, so that way if you have an intel processor x, they are sure that it doesn't cause overheating or any other various processing issues. They also observe multi-core vs single-core performance.
However, this does not mean blizzard is conspiring against you. While it's indeed true that they do take computer specs into consideration, beyond that it is pretty much random.

I wrote about this topic in a blog a while back (http://www.wowphilosophized.com/2010/05/will-i-really-want-to-be-part-of-beta.html), but here's the short version: The little time I spent testing out new content on the Wrath beta ruined that content for me when I actually went through it again after Wrath came out, so if I do get an invite into the Cataclysm beta, I'll like be a part of it by leveling a Horde toon (likely a tauren paladin). That way, I can be helpful without spoiling all the delicious new Alliance content for myself, and once the game comes out, my experiences on my Alliance toons will be pristine and more enjoyable.

This is the same I plan to do (except probably with a goblin). I usually get into the betas by the 3rd or 4th wave (as I have for the last two expansions), so I hope this is the same for Cata as well.
Kaylad Jul 3rd 2010 8:33AM
Yes... I already decided that I'd rather level a whole new alt in the revamped zones than go through the endgame stuff if I am lucky enough to get a Beta invite.
Anathemys Jul 3rd 2010 9:28AM
I don't have things ruined for me easily, but, just in case, I'll be leveling Horde-side, so when my worgen levels, everything will be fresh and new.
Don't ask me why I don't get tired of things. I only got tired of vanilla WoW after leveling about 4 alts to level 40-ish. Lucky me, I guess!

I received a beta invite, and after downloading patches all night, finally got to play this morning. Copied my 80 pally over just to check out flying in the old world and seeing some of the world changes. Definitely very cool.
I agree with the OP - I'm waiting for the live version to level my worgen so I don't ruin the experience. While in beta, I'm going to enjoy my funny green gremlins with a Brooklyn accent. I'll also try out some of the max-level paladin stuff, and try to give Blizz some feedback, while things are still changeable.

Complete opposite here: I had all of WotLK's beta to relax and experience questing to 80: reading quest text, taking time out to explore, working on dumb achievements, and the most fun, seeing the content evolve through the development process.
Then, in live, I leveled through it again normally, gathering quests quickly and doing them faster.
Who wouldn't want that opportunity?
Dommens Jul 3rd 2010 8:11AM
I have the wotlk logo instead of the cata :( And I have never signed for a PTR.
Does anyone know why there is the wotlk logo problem?
olzer Jul 3rd 2010 9:37AM
WOTLK logo means that you have a WOTLK enabled account. If you get invited, the Cataclysm logo will come up next to the WOTLK one and let you download it.
To opt-in for a chance of the beta, click the Beta Profile Settings under the Manage My Games heading, then tick the Warcraft Universe box and click update my settings.

Worgen. Worgen all the way. And now, I know that although I don't really think I want to be in the beta, because I would ruin it for myself, I would probably do it if I got the option.
After all, I'm only human :(

Do EU players also get cataclysm beta keys or not?
Eamara Jul 3rd 2010 9:09AM
Yes. A couple of my guildies have got in, and I'm in the EU.
Valt Jul 3rd 2010 9:09AM
wow-europe has news post about it and eu links to battle net so you could get it next week if possible.
Myself? I got into SC2 beta, played it for while.. got bit bored because I dont have patience and courage to play online so I just did skirmishes.
Anyways. Still singed up on EU and didnt get beta atleast today. No idea is it because of the weekend tho, maybe they send out on monday or so to EU
Dreamstorm Jul 3rd 2010 9:12AM
EU gets everything later than US I'm, including the last patch.
Strange enough, as more than half subscribers are playing on EU Realms... (if I'm not mistaking).
Been checking my Battle-net 3 to 4 times a day now, but I don't think EU will get any betas any time soon.
