WRUP: The mystery weekend event

There's a definite, unmistakeable theme to this weekend's activities. I'd normally belabor it, but let's see if you can't just notice the pattern yourselves. Here's your hint: it involves explosions.
Okay. Yeah, you caught us. It's the beta.
Adam Holisky (@adamholisky) : This weekend I won't be playing anything. I'm going down to Minneapolis and finally making it to a Twins game at the new Target Field. Katie and I will be 11 rows up right behind the first base line. Can't wait! My favorite thing about the beta dropping has to be our live stream. Nothing is more fun than hanging out with thousands of you as we explore Azeroth all over again.
Alex Ziebart (@alexziebart): Beta
Anne Stickney (@Shadesogrey): Playing the beta until my eyes bleed. No raiding since it's a holiday weekend, so more than likely I'll be working on an entry for the Blizzard writing contest. Favorite Cataclysm beta thing...is that...bacon? Does anyone smell - HEY GUYS DO YOU SMELL BACON?
Amy Schley (@wowlawbringer): Saturday is my last day of WoW before my subscription runs out, (I know better than to have an active sub during my last month of bar prep. I am NOT taking this thing twice!) so I'll be cleaning out my mailboxes and bags, collecting gold from auctions and sharding the greens that haven't sold. I'll also be pushing my shaman as close to 80 as I can get before signing off satisfied with her jump from neglected level 25 to well equipped healer at ~75 in only two months. My favorite part of Cataclysm? Just ogling all the changes so I know what to preserve in my screenshot folder while I still can.
Basil Berntsen (@outdps): It's my step-brother's bachelor party, so I'll be camping this weekend. My favorite part of Cataclysm is probably Aspect of the Fox for hunters.
Chase Christian (@madsushi): Having a 4th of July BBQ with the in-laws, and hopefully trying out Ruby Sanctum if we can get enough people online. The new leveling path will definitely be my favorite part of Cataclysm, considering how much I hate leveling now after doing it so many times over the years.
Daniel Whitcomb (@danielwhitcomb): Considering sacrificing small animals so the Scythe will drop for my druid in the closing days of the fire festival. Also making good time on finishing up Eastern Kingdoms on my Loremaster push. My favorite part of the Cataclysm beta so far has been my goblin hunter. That girl is FIERCE. Haters to the left.
Elizabeth Wachowski (@leeatwaterlives): Going to San Francisco for the weekend, so no gaming, unless my mom deigns to let me show her how awesome the world of Fallout 3 is.
Joe Perez (@Lodurzj): I'm celebrating the independence of America by blowing up a small portion of it! BBQ and fireworks with the family this weekend. Game wise I'll be spending the weekend leveling my baby pally as much as possible. I'm still finding leveling as protection amazingly fun! Oh and if I have time some War For Cybertron. Oh, and my favorite part of Cataclysm so far is all the new patterns for jewelcrafting and alchemy. The trinkets for JC are really nice right now and I like the idea of teleportation potions like the potion of Deepholme
Lisa Poisso (@emused): I guess now that beta's here, it's time to make that fateful decision: Who will be the first character to move forward into Cataclysm territory -- or will it be a goblin, right off the bat? I foresee much tossing and turning at night this weekend.
Matt Low (@matticus): Checking out some Steam deals to see what other games are out there that I would be interested in. Working on streamlining and beefing up my guild roster as well, as we just hit 6/12 in ICC 25 on hard mode. Might check out Ruby Sanctum on 10 as well since we cleared it the day it came out on 25. My favorite part about Cataclysm has to be guild perks. Love the idea of it!
Mathew McCurley (@gomatgo): This weekend is probably one of running around doing a crazy amount of errands. Plus I want to get all my columns in early. I am also going into fits of rage over what characters are going to be my Cataclysm mains, with a goblin definitely up there in possibility. My favorite thing about the Cataclysm beta is the new level up animations and the goblin voices. I think they fit so perfectly, and I'm interested to see what they replace the obviously too racy for WoW quotes with.
Michael Gray (@writegray): I'm going to be blowing some stuff up with fireworks. Boom, baby.
Rich Maloy (@stoneybaby): BBQ, beer, and sun this weekend, in that order. Looking forward to the long weekend. As for Cataclysm: the improved graphics, new levels, new raids, new challenges, I'm looking forward to all of it.
Robin Torres (@cosmiclaurel): World of Goo, Colonization -- yes, I have fallen prey to those awesome Steam sales. I will also be finishing up the fires on a few of my characters. My favorite part of the Cataclysm news is the guild perks. It will be so much fun leveling up It came from the Blog. I can't wait!

Ah, the frostscyth of Ahune....
The only reason I got that was because I apparently had a insanely lucky 12 hour period. Got a rare fishing pole drop from the fishing daily, got Loque'nahak 10 minutes later by sheer accident, then a couple hours later (after sleep) I did Ahune and got both the scyth and the frostling in the same bag.
...Is there any way to trade the sycth though? I'm a hunter, and contrary to believe not every weapon is a hunter's weapon. So I feel bad that I actually got it.

Newb question alert -
'... so I'll be cleaning out my mailboxes and bags, collecting gold from auctions and sharding the greens that haven't sold.'
'sharding' = disenchanting?
Magnett Jul 3rd 2010 12:37PM
Yes, sharding's named after one of the types of mats you can get when disenchanting an item. Crystaling doesn't roll off the tongue as well, dusting's already taken and essencing just sounds silly.
Danieru Lynx Jul 3rd 2010 12:38PM
Haha, fair play.
Whatever was wrong with just 'disenchanting' though? =P
Avan Jul 3rd 2010 12:42PM
shar ding
dis en chan ting
Sharding has less syllables.
Danieru Lynx Jul 3rd 2010 12:57PM
... and?
Is that how you conduct your entire life or something? The fewer syllables the better? =/
Darky Jul 3rd 2010 1:09PM
"what does Poj mean daddy?"
"poj isnt a word"
"why are there longer words being used if there are shorter words we haven't used up yet?"
*head asplode*
Molly Jul 3rd 2010 2:29PM
Why do people use the words proc, mob, dps, tank, etc?
It's a game, and the game has its jargon...No need for there to be a specific reason for it.
Danieru Lynx Jul 3rd 2010 2:43PM
Well you see, as has clearly been missed, my original response of 'Whatever was wrong with just 'disenchanting' though? =P' was mostly rhetorical and in jest. However, Avan took it a bit too seriously and then gave rather bad reasoning for using 'sharding' over 'disenchanting' (not that I'm saying that using the former over the latter is a bad thing, hence my aforementioned response being rhetorical, =P).
To be fair though, your examples are all bad ones in this specific case, as two of those are acronyms, one of them is an abbreviation, and the last one is the term used in-game for the role (which is ironic, as that would therefore support the notion of using 'disenchanting' over 'sharding' - again, not that I'm here to push that or anything). The (frankly trivial) issue here (that has been blown way out of proportion) is an official term being cast aside in favour of an entirely different (even if it is related) word (as opposed to it being cast aside in favour of an acronym or an abbreviation (and a different-but-related word with fewer syllables =/= an abbreviation, =P).
I'll say it again though - 'tisn't me making an issue out of it. I'm just responding to the issue that has arisen from the aforementioned misunderstanding.
suh8lim3 Jul 3rd 2010 3:09PM
Sheesh, it's a game. Calm down. Sharding is a common term used by most Wow players to mention disenchanting an item. It's not rocket science. Do you sit at home on saturday nights wondering why people type LOL instead of typing out the entire "laughing out loud"? Seems to me that's how you spend the majority of your time.
Danieru Lynx Jul 3rd 2010 3:11PM
*facepalm*
I'm not even going to bother responding to that, -_-
Poxus Jul 3rd 2010 12:38PM
Warhammer Online...lots of it
http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=1156
So far, the game is active like it was just released again
Extrox Jul 3rd 2010 1:02PM
That's not very reassuring...
I did the whole head start thing when it came out and they ended up having to condense servers in what? About a month or two?
I've been debating checking it out again though to see if anythings improved. The fact everyone clumped in the RvR and the fact the PvE sucked kind of drove me away. (By clumped, I mean that T3 would be extremely active but T1/2/4 wouldn't be. Then T4 would be extremely active and T1/2/3 wouldn't be).
Either way, I'm sure I'll re-sub for a month while waiting for Cataclysm. There were a lot of good things I enjoyed about the game as well.
Brett Jul 3rd 2010 1:35PM
I have a 3 day weekend starting tomorrow (yes, still working today). Tonight is my local fireworks so that'll be fun, and the gist of my family activities.
Will be showing off parts of Cataclysm to my significant other, and looking forward to that. Not much else is planned, so will probably end up with a fair amount of real WoW, beta WoW and HBO/Showtime on Sunday for True Blood and others!
Jeremy Jul 3rd 2010 1:35PM
I have a 9 day "weekend" ahead of me, so I have a lot of time to kill. Try to pug a raid or 3, explore/quest more on the Beta, and take my dog Lady for strolls in the park and around the here. My big Beta project while questing though, is to figure out a spec that doesn't make me appear to be a drooling idiot.
sladedarkonis Jul 3rd 2010 1:59PM
Damn, did you all get beat invites or something?!?
