All the World's a Stage: Start planting your seeds for Cataclysm

On the off chance that you've been living under a rock for the last week, there's some important news you should know. The beta for Cataclysm has hit the streets, and your intrepid team of (mostly roleplaying) journalists at WoW.com have been scouring the web for the very best news. Keep an eye glues herein for the latest news and analysis.
"But, Mike," you ask, in a coy, hushed whisper. "Whatever doth this hath to do with roleplay?"
The answer is simple, my in-character friends. Cataclysm will represent the finest opportunity for roleplay in the World of Warcarft that I can remember. It's bigger than the Burning Crusade and it's bigger than Wrath of the Lich King. The world itself will be changing in concrete, unescapable ways. This is the mother load of roleplay: the very world is changing around you.
And with such momentous news beating down your door, now's the time for you to start planting the seeds for your future roleplay. Nobody wants to be the johnny come lately who plants storyline hints after the expansion has hit the shelves of your local gaming store. Instead, be the guy who's been roleplaying Cataclysm before Cataclysm was even cool!
Your class is changing
In Cataclysm, you class is changing. I don't mean that your character is actually changing which class he's a member of (unless you're a very hardcore reroller). Instead, many classes are undergoing some incredibly vast, comprehensive mechanics changes.
The hunter beta news is fairly epic. Whereas hunters were once a sort of mystic woodsman who wandered the land, befriending animal companions with mana based powers, they will now be a little more feral themselves. Accessing focus to use their hunter abilities, those characters could be roleplayed to more closely behave like their animal companions. Certainly, this is a fairly liberal interpretation of game mechanics, but that's still the stuff roleplay is made of.
We've talked about it before, but mages are also undergoing some pretty radical changes and additions. Will you roleplay this new material as if the rules of magic have somehow changed, or will you roleplay it as if nothing remarkable has happened? After all, it's not like a dragon of magic has recently been killed or anything.
Without going into every single possible class change, we can suffice to say that there's a bunch of hip class changes going down around town. Your character, of course, is a member of one of these classes. Don't let this opportunity to enhance your roleplay slip by. It doesn't make much sense to wake up when Cataclysm is released, and spontaneously have different powers.
Start plotting out storylines for the changes now. In the example of the hunter above, for example, you could roleplay a storyline in which your characte realizes he actually is a reincarnated hunter pet. His life, now, as a hunter is simply a karma-turnaround on his dutiful service in another life. Now armed with this past life knowledge, the hunter embraces his more animal aspects and seeks out adventure in a changed landscape.
However you choose to explain the Cataclysm mechanics changes, you shouldn't let this opportunity pass you by.
Your race is also changing
Each races class choices (mostly) have some kind of loose basis in lore. Dwarves don't use magic, for example. But, recently, we've discovered that dwarves will be able to learn the magic of warlocks! So will trolls!
That kind of change to lore doesn't happen over night. Someone in-character knows about these events now, and ther's no reason for you wait months on top of months before you start roleplaying. Imagine your character is a dwarven sheriff, whose job it is to maintain the mean streets of Ironforge. In the course of investigating a relatively mundane murder mystery, you discover your first dwarf warlock.
Can you even imagine how such a character would react? Not only are one of the noble children of Ironforge engaging in magic, they're doing so in congress with a demon. Falling back on the precept that roleplay is about conflict, interaction, and character growth, this storyline would force your character to confront ugly truths about his racial behavior. It's great story fodder.
There are so many new race and class combinations in Cataclysm that almost none of the old prejudices will hold true. It's up to you to reach out and take ownership of your character's progression, as he learns about these deviations from standard practice.
Oh my gosh, a dragon
There's already been a lot of discussion about how, exactly, Deathwing's going to go about bringing the Cataclysm. It might be as simple as a magic rituat that opens a portal to the elemental plane of earth. Once open, this portal would lay some serious havoc down on Azeroth. Conversely, Deathwing may take up physical flight across the globe, breathing fire down on hapless villagers, and burninating some thatched roof cottages.
Regardless of which way that story goes, though, you can start planting story hooks to explore later in Cataclysm. Maybe your mentor has taken up residence in the Barrens. You should roleplay that now, so that in a year, when your character goes off to find the mentor, you're not springing a surprise on your group mates.
Regardless of how you take advantage of the upcoming story, the trick is to get started now. With all the beta news streaming across the interent, for roleplayers, Cataclysm starts now. We don't need the gear to start living the stories. We can start them now.

The term 'dwarf' can now describe very short humans, regardless of its mythical origins + being able to summon greater creatures than themselves.

I believe the phrase is "mother lode", see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_lode for how it came about.

I hope to get in the beta, along with millions of other players. Althought the chances are slim, there is always that little extra hope!

I believe in the beta for Wrath, we all started up threads that were promising but they didn't exactly pan out. A warlock guildleader "went missing" because he was off somewhere getting turned into a Death Knight- of course this guy was really just playing the beta obsessively, but he did manage to get the server first 80 dk, roleplayed his newfound DK power for a while... and then quit. Ah well. I think I played having dreams of the north (nothing too specific or personal, just of northrend) but I'm not much for grandstanding about myself.
I doubt the way I play my class will change too much, as my hunter's connection to shamanism is more from the people he trained with than anything, but the stealth might be an interesting mechanic for it.

See, it seems wrong to me to use outside knowledge to RP now. This is coming from someone who doesn't really RP. I don't really know how to put it... it just... doesn't feel right.
edgesumaria Jul 4th 2010 7:14PM
I don't believe the author is telling anyone to RP as an omniscient (excuse me if that is poor spelling) character, but rather as someone who feels a change going on. No need to mention Deathwing or the destruction of Azeroth in order for (as an example) a shaman RPing that they feel a change/shift in the elemental blanace or a Druid who feels the planets pain. Both have the opportunity to RP it as either fallout from the fight against the Lich King or trying to find answers in these small clues. Also after years of a hunter being around his or her pet, it wouldn't be a stretch to RP a better understanding and closer bond between the two. It is one thing to use what we know is going to change and plant the seeds as hints/story lines to help the change, it is much kore unrealistic to just wake up when Cata hits and RP our charters as "this has always been what I have been like, pay no attention to the past 5 years" or "Well this is new, let's try to explain it away or forget to give a story why it happened."

This article is more referring to seeking out the seeds of what's to come, investigating, building something that wont be complete until Cataclysm actually happens. In the examples of the new race/class changes, we've already seen seeds of the lore in the game world, the fantastic discussion between two tauren npc's is a great earworm to start considering tauren paladins....you could play a tauren druid who overheard the discussion and had it resonate with you, start talking with your rp friends about it and how it's made you feel, start finding a closer connection with the 'Sun/Light' that will culminate in Cataclysm with your character becoming a Tauren Paladin.
There was mention of a character at one point, an undead warrior who was standing by a target dummy and shooting it with a bow and arrow. Their whole thing was that in life they were a hunter, and they wanted to get that back. Come Cata, that person will be rerolling the character as an undead hunter.
It's using future knowledge, yes, but in a realistic manner...Cata isn't meant to just happen overnight, Blizzard has been putting in threads and lore not only in the game of WoW itself but through the comics and books, and are shining a spotlight on what's to come, by showing how the world is moving toward it. This is just encouraging RP'ers to start doing the same for themselves, and their own stories.

I think your concerns are valid. There's a huge difference between letting a bit of Cataclysm knowledge filter into your characters actions (as in the examples given in the article) and outright metagaming. There was a huge outcry when a bunch of RPers on my server decided that one of them had a vision of Deathwing returning...this would be an example of using the information badly.
On the other hand, we also have a group of players who are using the time to write out their goblin backgrounds interactively (http://wow-tng.org/showthread.php?t=18666). When Cataclysm hits, their goblin guild is going to be amazing because they already have "history" together.

I severely hope I get picked for beta access, I would be one happy warlock.

I'm seriously considering some paid race change RP ideas for my Warlock.
His story began as a human that was eaten alive on the shores of Northrend and undead-ified shortly after arriving (wanted to re-roll my 71 warlock on the Horde side and get a fresh start and not pay 55 bucks). He tried his hand at the typical Undead alchemy thing but was downright terrible at it.
Now he is an (evil) fashion designer (why, oh why did they kill Shadoweave tailoring). Also, he blows things up (engineering).
I'm seriously considering the troll change in the expansion, and of course there's nothing like a little explosive engineering gone wrong. (Especially since there is technically precedent for it.) Is it decent? Cliche? Thoughts?
Maxpowr Jul 4th 2010 8:15PM
I would suggesting adding to your gold stockpile as well. With 2h greens vendoring for 20g+, you're gonna need a hefty bank account to survive the initial onslaught of gold inflation.

Consummate vs!
I said consummate vs!

Jease, guy wouldn't know majesty if it bit him in the face

DEATHWING!
(Dun da dun da dun da da da da da da)
DEATHWING!
Burninating the countryside
Burninating the peasants
Burninating all the peoples
And their thatched roof cottages!
THATCHED ROOF COTTAGES!
Seriously, someone could make an awesome Trogdor/Deathwing video. Get on that, Internet.

My first toon on WoW was a Human Warlock; I got rid of him before BC launched and have regretted it ever since. I'm going to use Cataclysm as a chance to bring him back... as a Worgen. He was only ever 60, so getting that high will be easy with Heirlooms.
And oh look; why did he leave? Well it turns out he became Worgen and hid from society, you know... in the mountains or something... eating grubs. And yeah uh... that mountain he lived in (eating grubs)? Well it got blown up so he had to move out.
Yeah!

I have actually already started doing some of this; though for my troll it concentrates more on the retaking of Echo Isles. She has, due to roleplay thus far, been very disconnected from her Darkspear brethren and has bonded more with Tauren thanks to her two friends. However, her two tauren friends died in Northrend (In truth, I transferred servers. But it works) so she has been drifting.
Recently she has taken greater interest in her tribe, and has started to appraoch more trolls to try and reconnect. Come Echo Isles... It's gonna be a huge moment of Troll pride for her.
My troll shaman is also going to be feeling more and more off kilter; as shown in her using the explosives of her profession more and more often. After the Cataclysm hits, she will have a moment of complete insanity before passing out and then taking awhile to recover and rebalance herself.
It's going to be fun! :D

And the Deathwing comes in the NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT

"Each races class choices (mostly) have some kind of loose basis in lore. Dwarves don't use magic, for example."
I don't think this was ever established. If anything, it was established to be uncommon, but not unheard of.
Pheras Jul 5th 2010 7:29AM
My big plan involves mentioning to my RP-mates that my character's father has retired (due to my character's generous monetary donations)... to Stormwind's Park district.
Yeah, killing Deathwing is going to be VERY personal for my character.
Ron Jul 6th 2010 2:17AM
Bet he wishes we still had the stonemasons guild...which ironically is gonedue to Deathwing's daughter, now that I think about it (I think, I'm not entirely familiar with lore).
