Insider Trader: Mining, the tradesman's multi-tool

I've said before that farming professions are usually a waste of time. The opportunity cost of a farming profession is another crafting profession, which could make you so much more money per hour that you can always afford to buy the mats you need. The exception to this rule is mining.
All the gathering professions are simple and no risk. You pay nothing but time to level them, and you are able to make money by using them without risking anything but, again, time. The difference between your average player and an auctioneer, however, is that the auctioneer is always measuring his success in gold per hour. Extremely good farmers can do better than extremely bad auctioneers, however if you're capable of being an extremely good farmer, you're probably capable of being at least a good auctioneer, and are spending those hours doing a more repetitive, less interesting task for less money.
Mining is the exception to this rule because it opens up the ability to perform several very important transformations:
- Smelting ore into bars
- Smelting bars and elementals into Titansteel
Do you actually mine?
No, I don't. I mined to get my skill up, and I'll mine for the first week or so in a new expansion. Aside from that, though, there's never any reason for me to spend my time gathering. Assuming the opportunity cost of an hour is, say, 2000g in lost AH profits, I can always get more ore for 2000g than I can mine in an hour. This will likely not be true when Cataclysm launches, which is why I'll mine for a week or so when it starts.
What I use my miner for is vast amounts of AFK smelting. I stockpile Cobalt Ore and Saronite Ore when they're close to my target prices, and smelt it as I need it. Saronite can be smelted and vendored for 25g a stack, so if the ore is ever under 12.5g a stack, I'll buy every last scrap of it and mail it to my smelter (with the understanding that I'll never actually vendor Saronite Bars -- I simply use their vendor value as a cost limiter). You can store as many mails as you want on a single character for 30 days, however you can only see 50 at a time. I use one character specifically for storing massive quantities of herbs and ore, who never gets any mail that I could conceivably miss. Every 28 days, I mass-return the mail to my purchaser, who will open and resend them all.
Why am I smelting ore? There's a variety of reasons.
- I use tons of Cobalt Bars to make enchanting mats. When I'm saturated with enchanting mats, I sell the bars for almost double the ore on a regular basis because people often don't have a miner capable of smelting this.
- I use tons of Saronite Bars for tons of things, including making Titanium Bars and belt buckles. I also sell Saronite Bars for a nice margin over the two ore it took to make them
- I smelt Truesilver and make a decent profit because of all the neat toys that still call for the bars. In fact, I smelt many different types of old world ores and sell the bars for a decent markup, considering that most of the work is done whilst I watch Dr. Who.
- I smelt Titansteel when the prices go far enough above the mats cost to be worth the trouble.
Ok, ok. I'll get a miner.
Good. Now remember that unless you're a tank, you probably won't want to mine on any character you plan on playing seriously. You're costing yourself a serious profession perk and replacing it with a dinky amount of bonus stamina. Also, druids can switch in and out of flight form without the cast time of a mount. Paladins, DKs and hunters all have fairly accessible mount speed talents available to them. Hunters can Feign Death out of annoying patrolling mobs. No matter who you pick, getting to 450 skill will be a seriously annoying process unless you have a epic flying mount with Cold Weather Flying.
You're going to make a 65 DK anyways, right? He's a good choice for people who want a miner but don't want to have to level one.

Truly sucks to be you guys. On my server, I can get a stack of saronite ore for less than 18g most days, and resell it smelted for about 25-30. That's just the 10 bars.
Sadly, the titanium transmute is not a money maker. Titanium bars are going for about 14g each. :(

Pity the ore on my server sells for more that the bars by a large margin, except for saronite where the ore is usually 13 to 14 gold a stack

My druid was Herbalist and Alchimist during BC and I changed him to a miner / alchi during Wrath.
While at the beginning of Wrath some decent gold was possible by smelting Titansteel bars, nowadays the timeslots where Titansteel sell are very rare.
I think how materials sell is mostly dependent on the realms environment. Lately I recognized that Sholazaar for example isn't mined for Saronite like mid of last year.
Especially on my server (Lordaeron EU), prices for almost all ressources fluctuate heavily (with exceptions on high-profit ressources).
Especially ores - which sold well some months ago seem to be sated (probably because most people do have alts with appropiate blacksmith/Jewelcrafting skills).
In my opion gathering skills are necessary for leveling crafter professions but are not suitable to make any gold with them (at least if you do not want to spend your whole day farming).

Basil - fascinating article. It presupposes a particular economy, however. The economy on my main server (Kilrogg-EU, Horde side) is such that the sale price of mats is generally higher than that of the finished goods. Yes, ore goes for more than bars! So the mining transforms are pretty useless. This is true of all the crafting professions, all the way up, until you get to the recipes that are rare drops at which point it's possible to make about 10%-20% profit crafting them. So many people are levelling crafting profs that there's no scarcity of finished product.
What would you recommend in this environment?
Basil Berntsen Jul 6th 2010 9:32AM
Watching more carefully for longer periods of time- any time there's someone leveling a crafting profession, there'll be a demand spike that might push the prices up. Also, if the lowest price is making no money on every single consumable, he will eventually run out of money. Also, you might be missing out on the off-the-AH suppliers that your competitors use- see if you can get ore for even less in trade chat.
More often than not, when I hear of markets like this, it's a matter of having looked at the wrong time. Install marketwatcher and run it twice a day for 2 weeks. Don't forget to include both your finished goods and your mats.

Thanks. We have a reasonably good history from Auctioneer stretching back about 8 months, but there appear not to be the obvious weekly (for example) fluctuations I see on the other servers I use. I may simply be looking at the wrong times, as I don't have WoW open 24/7.
Basil Berntsen Jul 6th 2010 9:46AM
Thing with auctioneer is that it remembers every sale you make and averages out the market price it thinks ore is worth, however it doesn't graph the prices. Market watcher will show you a graph over time. Scan when you normally scan, and maybe add a special scan for tuesday/wednesday nights and another one on saturday afternoons.

I just got to level 450 mining. At level 72. With no flying mount. On a PvP server. Really, it's not that bad. Just go round and round the left part of Shalozar basin. No deaths so far - the mobs are not that bad - just ride away from them unless you need to fight for a node. The opposing faction apparently feels sorry for me and mostly leaves me alone (just one bubble hearth so far).

I've filled my mailbox up a few times. No more mail until I move items out.

There are some servers where the lack of other people (low pop) makes mining very useful just to get the metal for leveling as there is a lack of certain metals needed on the AH. As a hunter with mining and engineering it is great to be able to just mine a vein or two and have ammo. As an engineer with a mote extractor, mining is a pretty profitable way to waste time while waiting for a raid to start. In an hour it isn't unusual for me to get over 1000g worth of ore, gems, and essences. If sold properly product procured from mining is a very lucrative option for making gold.

For all new characters that i make I like to get two gathering professions, benefit from the extra stats until i hit 65 ( and the gathering everything i see while leveling) + then when i reach the level that actual crafting professions start giving extra stats I raise two crafting professions.

Re a DK miner alt: Unholy gets the speed bonus so is probably the best. Plus a pet is useful if you agro too many when you thought you could get that node.
Also mining is *much* easier to power level than herbing. Buy the ore and all you need to mine is 10 things (290-300) prior to Northrend.
I am unsure whether the ultimate gatherer is:
Pally/DK (20% faster)
Druid (insta flight form)
Rogue (enter instance, stealth to goodies.)
Cata will be a bit different for me at least: I have always been a believer in mine/herb+skin until 80 (or maybe 75) and then just powerlevel to 450. But now my raiding toons all have real professions, so I won't be gathering to 85 until my Goblin starts.
