The Daily Quest: What if

Here at WoW.com, we're on a Daily Quest (which we try to do every day, honest) to bring you interesting, informative and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere. Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment and you may see it here tomorrow! Take a look at the links below, and be sure to check out our WoW Resources Guide for more WoW-related sites.
Oh Rhonin, you're so silly. Messing with timelines and making "what if" questions out of nowhere. Let's look around the blogosphere at some what-if's and various other speculation, shall we?
- Tobold's MMORPG Blog wonders what if WoW had an expansion every year?
- World of Warcraft Philosophized wonders if better gear should look more unique.
- Aspect of the Hare has a learning experience, specifically the top ten things they've learned since returning to WoW.
- Looking for More has a top ten list too -- the top ten things they will do if they become a boss.

Someone pointed out in the comments that what Blizzard does in patches is what the average game does in expansions. Ulduar? That'd be $15. ToC? Another $15. ICC Raid? $15, or for $25 you could get the 3 ICC 5 mans as well.
I'd need to have Blizzard-eyes-only-spreadsheets to know this definitively, but I think if they charged approx the same price for each "expansion", but then charged for every Raid and "map pack", whether it be PvE 5-mans or Battleground/Arena settings, WoW could quite possibly go on the Free-to-play/Freemium model. (for example, wrath would have shipped with basically everything it had, but if you wanted to progress past Malygos, you'd have to cough up some. Same with ToC 5, 10, 25). They wouldn't be making as much money as they do with $13 a month subscriptions (if you buy-in for 6 months), but they'd make money.

"World of Warcraft Philosophized wonders if better gear should look more unique."
YES!!!
I think in fact each spec should have it's own uniqe look...
But thats too mucg work I guess.

I would *love* a way to make each spec look unique. Maybe just different particle/color effects on the tier gear? For example, mage gear could have parts that glowed red/orange, purple/white, or various shades of blue depending on what the wearer's spec was.
But it's graphical work that would take a lot of time on Blizzard's part, so I really don't...
*sunglasses*
...see it happening.

I've always loved the "what not to do as an evil overlord" list, so Looking For More's list made me happy.

Pet peeve of mine...
Something cannot be more unique than something else. It's either unique or it isn't.
Vogie Jul 5th 2010 11:20PM
That's only true if you see something as truly, unquestionably, unabashedly set apart from all contexts.
But for the rest of reality, virtual or otherwise, "unique-ness" is a scale.
For example: All loot from a particular boss does not share item models with any other loot. They are Unique... However, all of that loot also shares a general theme with the instance, the setting, the zone, and the timeline. Therefore, it is not "unique". More like "unique-ish".
For WoW, there are things that are more unique than others. ToC is more unique than other raids by eliminating trash. Hunters are more unique than other classes because they only actively use one ranged weapon, as opposed to one-two melee weapons.
Blizzard could make the most dull fight in ICC much "more unique by" having the Kool-Aid Man Burst through a wall, because:
*that's never happened when anyone was attempting the fight before...
*it's a blatant copyright infringement...
*I just thought of it this moment...
But... since Blizzard is well-known for pop/counter culture references in their games, that happening isn't particularly unique to the game as a whole.
Compare that to, say, finding a rare, first-edition Jane Austen novel, where the Kool-Aid Man bursts through a wall about 3/4 of the way through the story. That would truly unique. Unless you read this post first.

What webcomic is that picture from? it's bugging me now! ;-;
Anne Stickney Jul 6th 2010 12:51AM
Not from a comic - it was just done for an article.

Ahh. A Shame! it's got such potential to be a very funny strip. relating all the changes from 1.0 to 4.0 of WoW to the past to watch them weep.
