The Queue: Super-size holiday Cataclysm Q&A edition

In celebration of Independence Day, or a very early Bastille Day if you're not American, today is a super-sized edition of the Queue, filled to the brim with info from the Cataclysm beta. There are spoilers ahead, so be careful!
tnrtbone13 asked:
"Have the plague-affected zones become less ... plague-like? Also is there a time gap between the two expansions?"
The plague isn't completely gone from Azeroth, but in some of the places it affected the most, it's been more or less neutralized. Western Plaguelands especially is an incredibly different place after Arthas' death.
There does appear to be a time leap after Wrath, but we're not sure exactly how long it's been yet; an NPC in Hyjal claims that it's been ten years since your exploits in Outland, which is a pretty big leap, but given how much has changed, that's not very surprising.
promisha asked:
"What are the starter pets for each hunter race going to be?"
- Worgen: Mastiff
- Goblin: Crab
- Human: Wolf
- Forsaken: Bat
- Orc: Boar
- Dwarf: Bear
- Troll: Raptor
- Draenei: Moth
- Night elf: Nightsaber
- Tauren: Plainstrider
- Blood elf: Dragonhawk
tagegould asked:
"Do Worgen actually get top hats?"
They absolutely do, as a reward from a Gilneas quest.

Tatharnio asked:
"Are the World Dragons still guarding the portals to the emerald dream? And if so have they scaled in level?"
Ysondre is apparently the only one who survived the Nightmare with sanity intact. Taerar is still around, but crazy, and you team up with Ysondre to put him out of his misery.
jpatko asked:
"How tall are the worgen compared to humans?"
Roughly night elf height.
sakijr asked:
"What do the mastery stat that you find on gear do?"
It boosts the effect of your third mastery: Shadow Orb effectiveness for shadow priests, for example, or Elemental Overload damage for elemental shaman.
elliotpage asked:
"Is Old Blanchy still in the game, post-cata?"
Yes, just don't ask if she's alive.
justinhross asked:
"How does the Worgen transformation work? Is your character wolflike all the time or do you get to choose when to be human or...?"
You can choose to be in human form out of combat if you so desire, but you're forced into worgen form in combat. If you never want to be in human form, you never have to be.
tagegould asked:
"I heard that STV would be changed a lot. Is it?"
Very much. STV is split into two zones -- Northern Stranglethorn and the Cape of Stranglethorn -- by a huge whirlpool, and quests take place in one zone or the other. There are several new flight paths, brand new questlines and hubs, updates to old questlines, and more. We'll go into detail on STV in an article soon.
Also, Old God blood.
RossGallacher asked:
"Will we need to pay for flying in Azeroth?"
Doesn't look that way. You have the ability to fly in Azeroth if you have the ability to fly, period.

have there been any new mounts or pets introduced?
ElrithCC Jul 5th 2010 5:22PM
The mastiff has a brand new model. There are also foxes. They probably use the normal wolf combat though.
Prances in Underpantss Jul 5th 2010 5:24PM
I hope they still introduce skeletal raptors!
elstor Jul 5th 2010 5:34PM
Swimming mounts identical to Nether Rays (the flying mounts you get from the Outland rep grind with Shatar) are obtained in the underwater zone
RogueJedi86 Jul 5th 2010 5:47PM
The nether ray model is placeholder. Like how the Rhino's placeholder model in WotLK Alpha/Beta was a clefthood, and how the mammoths' placeholder model was elekks. Look it up. They use a similar looking model as placeholder until they make a better one. Nether Rays look similar to regular manta rays, so they're the placeholder. You can see a Ray model on mmo-champ, so I'm sure one will be used. Link to pic: http://static.mmo-champion.com/mmoc/images/news/2010/cataclysm/cataclysm_models/stingray.jpg

Regarding the 10 year thing- everything I've read puts Cata approximately 5ish years after Vanilla. Considering the NPC is in Hyjal, perhaps they're referencing it having been 10 years since Archimonde attacked the World Tree during WC3? That would make a whole lot more sense, all things considered.
Kvothe Jul 5th 2010 6:30PM
D'oh. Stupid comment system. My above comment wasn't meant to be a reply; it was meant to be a separate post...
Timmy Jul 5th 2010 7:51PM
no, the NPC in hyjal is talking about your player character specifically and your exploits in Outland 10 years ago. I don't recall the actually phrasing sadly. That quest firmly sets that BC was 10 years prior to Cata
koolaid201 Jul 6th 2010 1:44AM
The foxes in Ginaes have their own model and look very much like a red tail fox does, problem is that they are not tameable, or atleast that is what beast lore told me when I used it on one.
Nonette Jul 6th 2010 5:32AM
Kvothe is right, Timmy. There's an important "or" in the comment the NPC makes, indicating that they're referring to 10 years ago (the Third War) and the events in Outland separately. That means it's been 5 years since Vanilla, so at most it's been three years since the start of Wrath. It's possible the expansion timeline's been retconned to something closer to real time, though, so that would mean there's no time skip.
All the changes to the old world not related to the Cataclysm itself in that case would just be updates to show that stuff has happened in the intervening five years. I'm sure some of the changes (the bridge in Redridge being finished, for example) actually happened quite some time ago in the timeline. Blizzard just had higher priorities until now.
Zelius Jul 6th 2010 7:37AM
@Nonette
I can confirm that it's been five years since vanilla. Without spoiling too much, there's a quest in Westfall involving Deadmines that specifically says it's been five years since the events that happened there.
Moosepie Jul 6th 2010 8:40AM
In vanilla, Anduin Wrynn was about 8 years old. In the book stormrage he is almost 13. The model currently in beta for him appears to be around 18. I'm still voting for 10 years.

What's the deal with the warlock columnist? Is it gonna happen anytime soon? There hasn't been any warlock love on this website in quite some time. I mean, isn't there anyone there at wow.com that has a warlock that could write something competent rather than leaving all of us warlocks hanging in the dust????
ToxicPopsicle Jul 5th 2010 5:15PM
Old Blanchy? Dead? My heart is aching.
Arednel Jul 5th 2010 5:19PM
off to the glue factory I presume

Lieutenant Horatio Lane says: Looks like they really put the cart...
Lieutenant Horatio Lane says: ...before the horse.

"off to the glue factory I presume"
or the gelatin factory
offday Jul 5th 2010 5:46PM
This sucks. I always went out of my way to collect oats for that horse even when the quest was gray because I felt bad for him. Who's responsible for this? They will be my number one target in cataclysm.
Pyromelter Jul 5th 2010 5:48PM
Oh. My. God. I'm gonna roll an alliance just to see that dialogue. That is the most excellent pop culture reference I have ever seen in a video game.
Ever.
EasyAnswer Jul 5th 2010 6:05PM
somewhere, you hear someone yelling "YEAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!"
