The Classifieds: Where in the world is Sofa?

Waldo's for noobs. Carmen Sandiego belongs in the kiddie pool. The name of the game for deep-diving members of <Kumpania> (Turalyon [US-A]) is "Where in Azeroth is Sofa?" You see, <Kumpania> GM Cowpies is no couch potato -- he's got "Sofa," his alt, running all across Azeroth to find the ultimate hiding spot for a hide-and-go-seek contest awarding the lucky winner a cool 4,000 gold. Each day, contestants poke through clues posted on the guild forums and make their best guesses in guild chat. "If the guess is close enough to his location, he logs into the contest toon," explains guild officer Mellyne, "and if you're in line of sight, you win."

A few sample clues:
  • Sounds like a CLASSIC from 1973.
  • When you figure out what these have in common, it will help you down the road: Benjamin Franklin, Ronald Reagan, Joan of Arc, John McCain, Hellen Keller, David Letterman, Phil Collins, Carol Burnett, Michelangelo, Barack Obama.
  • It would be hard to put a square peg here. ... If I face NW of my location, I feel the bitter sting.
  • You must "listen" and be "turned on" to get some clue as to my location.
Sound like fun? <Kumpania> members think so, too. Despite a winner last week, everyone had so much fun that Cowpies/Sofa is starting another round with an all-new location and all-new clues. "We're not a raiding guild, we're a social/leveling guild that occasionally makes a Naxx run," Mellyne says. "This contest does wonderful things for us, bringing members together and getting them on our website. Even for the folks not participating, it's truly funny to watch everyone making their guesses." Kudos to Cowpies for donating the time, prize money and creative energy to make this four-year guild tradition such a resounding success. (And by the way, Sofa's location from the photo above is listed at the end of this week's column.)

Let's crack open The Classifieds ...

Random acts of uberness

Drama, whining, ninjas, dolts -- so drab, so mundane. It's when another player lights up your night with precise play, a wicked sense of humor or unexpected generosity that your log-in becomes something to remember. Send your shout-outs to theclassifieds@wow.com so we can honor those who go above and beyond the standard call of PUG duty. Keep things brief (150 words or less, please), and be sure to list everyone's character names and home realms or battlegroup.

Defast, Kilrogg (US-A) On my hunter, I queue for randoms in a tanking/soloing spec, just for kicks. I recently got into a heroic HoR with Falric and Marwyn already down and the tank on a 10 minute AFK. I asked "anybody want to try
pet-tanking?" Of course everybody groaned, but our Tree of Life, Defast from Kilrogg US, agreed to heal my bear, FuzzyWuzzy! We bested the skeleton easily, and everybody agreed that the Defast and Fuzz made a great team. Our total DPS wasn't quite enough for the gauntlet, but again Defast saved the day, healing all but one of us though Arthas's nasty aura of death. For the first time ever, I actually cheered at the sight of the Skybreaker coming up over the railing to save us! Thanks to everyone, but especially Defast - Kilrogg US, for a really fun HoR. -- Anonymous

Sithren, Chromaggus (US-H) Huge thanks to Sithren and the rest of the crew on the amazing run of H-HoR: Suny (Muradin), Dankillsit (Eitrigg), Aktank (Korgath). We were thrown together in H-PoS, but Suny had never finished normal PoS, and she was healing. We had one near-wipe where I was the last man standing after Garfrost. After finishing off what relatively smoothly, Suny was curious to run on into Halls of Reflection, having never been in there before. This was Halls of Reflection Heroic. I myself had only been able to get into H-HoR (tank with 33k HP unbuffed) after that very H-PoS run. On we went anyway, for the fun of it. After a wipe on wave 4, Sithren volunteered to go Tree of Life to help heal, so we two-healed through Falric and Marwyn, followed by a fun chase by the Lich King (Sithren went back to boomkin). A great job all around and too many battle resurrections to count make Sithren a star. Great fun was had by all and I would gladly group with any of you in an instant. Thanks for your patience throughout both runs, WE DID IT! -- Jep <Unidentified>, Saurfang (US-H)

Fletcherchr, Scarshield Legion (EU-A); Warlørd, Terokkar (EU-A), Daedalas, Terokkar (EU-A); Laeila, Scarshield Legion (EU-A) I recently started a new job and the hours are quite long. After a particularly long day I joined the LFD queue as a healer and found myself in Azjol'Nerub. Realising that I still needed [Watch Him Die] I asked if the group would like to give it a go. They all seemed really positive about it and so we discussed tactics and jumped straight in. We had two wipes but everyone stayed optimistic, I even offered to pay for repairs but they all said no. We dusted ourselves down and went for a third attempt. It was a close call but we pulled it off and thent Warlørd got the trinket he was after from the next boss! Thanks to Fletcherchr, Warlørd, Daedalas and Laeila, a tough week just got a little easier and I've had the best pug experience I've had in a long time :) -- Olarr, <Those Who Fight>, Steamwheedle Cartel (EU-A)

Joannsfabric, Turalyon (US-H) Currently I'm leveling a Horde Shaman alt to complement my Alliance main. The big problem is that, due to Heirlooms, I'm leveling up really fast and had very little money. I put out a call on my realm forums for any Horde players willing to help me exchange gold across faction. My first answer came from Joannsfabric, a Belf Priest, who willingly gave me 100 gold and asked for nothing in return. I wanted to give a big thanks to Joann and let her know that I will gladly return the favor any day. -- Yohasakura, Turalyon (US-H)

Seeking to progress to 25-man content after filling more healer spots. Contact Moriturus or Kaisura in game.

ICC-25 <Carnage> (Destromath [US-H]) is filling all slots for 25-man ICC raiding. Raids Tues./Wed./Thurs. 6-9 p.m. server/PT; must be available all three nights. "Looking for people who are mostly already geared, not looking to carry anyone," notes their recruiter. "Looking for people who are willing to show and make good strides at progression; currently stuck at 10 of 12 in 25-mans and we have a 10-man that is working on LK."

Prepping for Cataclysm <Blood Moon Rising> (Area-52 [US-H]) seeks friendly, adult players in preparation for Cataclysm raiding. Raids Wed./Thurs. 7-11 p.m. ET, alt raids Mon. 7-11 p.m. ET. "Primarily composed of in-game and RL friends who have been playing together since Burning Crusade, BMR is looking for fun, friendly, adult players who are interested in a welcoming and fun environment, aren't interested in guild-hopping, and are willing to put forth time and effort to clear content at a reasonable rate," writes their recruiter.

25-man raiding <Bound> (Staghelm [US-H]) is seeking to strengthen its ranks with members age 21+. "Something is going on every night in Bound, and we have a well formulated guild structure which fosters communication and organization amongst team members," notes their recruiter.
