Raid Rx: Healing Halion in Ruby Sanctum

The 3.3.5 patch brought us the final raid instance before Cataclysm strikes Azeroth. Halion, a fairly large Twilight dragon, has invaded the Ruby Sanctum. Naturally, the job falls to us to try to repel him and and the rest of his followers. Before you get to engage Halion, you have to deal with Saviana Ragefire, Baltharus the Warborn and General Zarithrian.
There's also the trash, which has crippled and stalled many pickup raids (and some guilds).
Quick trash tips
Use any form of crowd control, if you feel it's necessary. As an example, druids can easily Hibernate dragons. If you need to, have them sleep the Invokers (the spellcasters). I find the Invokers' AoE explosive abilities are quite annoying. Strong group heals will be needed to counteract this if there are loose Invokers running around.
Phase 1: Surface phase
Mark of Combustion Add this to your list of customized debuffs, if your raid frames allow it. What will happen is an ability called Fiery Combustion will be cast on a random player in the raid. Whenever the affected player takes damage, a charge of Mark of Combustion will be applied on that player. Tell your trigger-happy dispellers to back off. People like me who see something dispellable in a raid will usually aim for it and try to cure the affected players. Unless they're already in a proper position, it is almost always going to be fatal to the raid if the mark gets removed when there are other players around them. Removing the Mark means that a giant, flaming void zone will appear on the ground where the player was when the debuff was removed. Any nearby players will get knocked back by the resulting explosion.
What you want to have happen here is for affected players to get as far away from the raid as much as possible. The longer it takes for marked player to get dispelled, the larger the flaming void zone will be.
Standard dragon tactics Halion has a Cleave and a Tail Lash. You'll need to stand on his side when healing to avoid getting blasted by any of those attacks.
Meteor Strike Every so often, Halion will target the ground where a player is standing. After about five seconds, a meteor will come flying in from the sky and land. It'll also cause fires to expand in four different directions.
It is possible for a tank to get targeted with Meteor Strike. On one occasion, the tank had Halion right by the fire wall that encircles the raiding area. He got targeted with a Meteor Strike and didn't realize it. When the fires were supposed to stretch out and expand, they didn't. Our tank got destroyed in less than a second with full health because of all that fire on the ground stacking on his location.
Moral of the story? Don't tank the boss in an area where fire can't expand outwards.
Phase 2: Twilight phase
Once Halion reaches 75% health, he'll shift over to the twilight plane. A portal will appear where he was and you'll need to click on it to engage him on the other side.
Mark of Consumption It is a similar ability to the Fiery Combustion above. The difference is that when Mark of Consumption is removed, it'll pull any nearby players directly on top of the void zone it generates. Same rule applies when it comes to dispelling and getting these players away from everyone else.
Twilight Cutter Two orbs will be floating around area. Every so often, a beam will appear between the two of them. Anyone caught by them will (more or less) instantly die. Keep a very close eye on the tank when the cutters are active. They can last maybe two seconds before they cut down. Have cooldowns ready to save them if they get too close to the cutters.
As far as positioning, Halion should be in the middle. Once again, you'll be healing from the side.
Phase 3: Surface and twilight combined!
Here is the fun part of the phase for healing officers. The decision on who stays on the surface to heal and who stays in the twilight realm to heal can affect your chances of success. If you want to really narrow down the choices, then keep in mind these two simple things:
- Twilight healing Requires near-constant movement. Select healers who are both aware of their surroundings and for whom moving has minimal impact on their ability to heal.
- Surface healing Not as much movement required.
Here is how I set up my team. Yours may look different.
- Shaman My lone shaman holds down the fort on the surface. I would get him to do dispels.
- Paladin My paladin sticks with the tank on the surface.
- Holy priest I round the trio up top on the surface with a holy priest with a holy priest who can cover anything those two miss.
- Discipline priest This is me! I like to heal down low in twilight. I'm also responsible for dispels in that area.
- Two resto druids My team of trees are stuck with me in twilight.
The procedure for the final 50% is that half your raid is going to go back to the surface and half your raid will stay on the bottom. It'll be a combination of both phase 1 and phase 2 at the same time.
Corporeality (which is pronounced cor-por-reality) might have an effect on healing, depending on which way the DPS is going. The more Halion gets pushed in one direction, the more damage he'll dish out on the corresponding side. So healers need to be aware of this. In other words, if his Corporeality is at 60%, he'll take more damage in the physical realm but deal extra damage in that same realm.
Good luck!

Hello Players. How are you? Fantastic.
Does WOW work like Facebook? No.
Should it work like Facebook? Yes.
Should we be using RealID? I don't know,
Do you want to share your personal real name to everyone on a public forum? Of Course you do!
FORUM TROLLS!
- Are the whole reason we are doing this change.
So, Players, Should your WOW account be linked to your Facebook? You tell me.
Just Keep Playing, Players.
*endsarcasm*
No offense, WOW.com, but I find it hard to ust 'go-on' with the news when this RealID Firestorm is going on.
feniks9174 Jul 8th 2010 4:32PM
This RealID/forum change isn't going through until the forums are scrapped and rebuilt at Cataclysm's launch. I, for one, do not want to spend the next 3-4 months talking about it regardless of how much I oppose it
niko Jul 8th 2010 4:34PM
lolwut?
keep the comments relative to the column, please. Just because you're freaking out about the RealID doesn't mean we have to discuss it in each and every post.

This.
I'm not really advocating wow.com shut down or anything quite so ridiculous despite what's going on now...but to be honest, about 99% of wow has REALLY lost it's flavor in light of recent announcements.
and as much as i know you guys here at wow.com have a job to do...giving tips and writing articles about playing really just seems like you're urging players to "keep on keepin' on" in spite of the exploitation looming over their heads.
let me be absolutely crystal clear...i'm not trying to be accusatory, inflammatory, or otherwise inciteful and i'm trying to give you guys a fair shake because i love what you do here and don't have any problem with it whatsoever.
however, you can't just ignore what's going on. it's a tricky situation, yes...and i don't envy being in such a position as this...and maybe the best thing you can do is just keep your head down and keep on truckin'...but maybe there is a better way ahead that doesn't make it seem like you're encouraging people to feed the ActiBlizz Beast? or maybe i'm just being emotionally invested and reading too into it. i dunno. food for thought, i guess

The change is happening. At this point, complaining about it is about as effective as trying to get a sports referee to change a call he made 10 minutes ago.
And personally I welcome any news that has NOTHING to do with Real ID/forum changes. At this point I am more interested in reading about Lady Gaga on Wow.com than hearing more whining, be it justified or not.
jhoover Jul 8th 2010 4:48PM
I'm really sorry the Real ID bruhaha has sucked all the joy out of your entire life, but you know, there are those of us who don't feel the same way. We don't begrudge you your right to feel that way, and conversely, you shouldn't begrudge our, or WoW.com's right to feel that there are still interesting things going on in the game and that they should be discussed just as much as Real ID.
Imagene Jul 8th 2010 5:16PM
Does every post need to have something in it regarding the Raid ID? There's plenty of writeups on it, and wow.com tends to not say a bunch of shit to piss off Blizz, so do you expect them to keep writing write up after write up after... yea.
You have this for instance: http://www.wow.com/2010/07/06/blizzards-responses-on-the-real-id-situation/
and this: http://www.wow.com/2010/07/07/rumor-blizzard-employees-real-life-names-will-not-appear-on-th/
and THEN there's: http://www.wow.com/2010/07/08/customizing-and-opting-out-of-real-id/
I'm not happy about everyone knowing my real name, but if you're not comfortable with it, don't do it. So I'm only doing it with the folks that already know who the majority of my alts are.
Anywho - thanks to all the writers at wow.com (I still call you wowinsider when you're not looking) for NOT stopping to only concentrate on one piece of crap that the majority of the wow population won't like. I'm one of them, but it's not the only thing I want to hear about.

Not posting strategies just because people are angry about something would be a disservice to people who come here for more than just Real ID news.
Even after 9/11, news channels still had weather reports...
Asaoirc Jul 8th 2010 6:23PM
Good point, (cutaia), I'm just really freaking out. for those of you who were confused, however, it was a play on the old spice "Swan Dive" man. I am angry about this change, but it doesn't need to go here. I apologise.
Matt Jul 8th 2010 7:15PM
woah...hey now, all you crazy cats. before we whip out the torches and pitchforks, i want to point out that i was actually quite civil about the whole thing, and am taking a measured anti-"sky-is-falling" approach. if you want to shout me down for throwing in my 2 cents about the importance of awareness so be it, but be prepared for a retort.
@moon - apologies that i may not share your dismal defeatist attitude, but i think it's people like who that feed bobby kotick's fire and encourage him to think he can conduct business this way. after all..it's been what, 2 whole days of "bruhaha" (so eloquently put, btw, hoover)! let's all get over it already! jeebus! that way we can confirm to ActiBlizz that they can keep drawing lines in the sand because all they'll get from us is a short burst of resistance before we exhaust our reserves. show some backbone, man.
@jhoover - many thanks for overdramatizing my point to solidify your own shaky position. i'm not trying to stir the pot (read AND try to understand my post); instead, i feel it's important that this issue not be swept aside because people are "tired of hearing about it" because like i said above, the people who implemented this change rely on the public's goldfish-like attention span and intense desire for "the new" in order to do what they do....i.e. a gross privacy violation in this particular case. i don't begrudge anyone's opinion regarding the matter, however i still reserve the right to try and keep it in the public focus - otherwise i think it will be lost, which will be a true disservice.
@imagene - noted, thanks for the heads up.
@cutaia - i never said this post shouldn't exist, however i actually think it's a disservice to the player base to not at least make mention of the issue or at the least add a disclaimer instead of relying on informational posts that will get smothered beneath newer posts. it's a real issue that needs a solid and visible show of support from not only the player base itself, but those who inform the player base as well. also, comparison to 9/11? inappropriate
Moonfaxx Jul 8th 2010 8:28PM
@Matt
I've got all the backbone in the world, buddy. And I'll be the last one to give up. My point is that it really is done. Yes, two days is all it took. I never said I'm 100% in favor of it; but it's a change that is coming in the form that it has been explained. Yes, we're all very much opposed to the "whatever brings in the money" attitude... But such is business. Don't expect that capitalist notion to change any time soon. I'm not harboring a defeatist attitude. Rather, I am both optimistic but realistic.
Moonfaxx Jul 8th 2010 8:41PM
@Matt
I just noticed that you wrote the following in regards to (cutaia)'s post:
"also, comparison to 9/11? inappropriate"
Let me be the first to say that is an asinine comment.
Matt Jul 8th 2010 9:04PM
@moon - where exactly is the backbone/optimism part of your argument, again? the "roll over dead here comes big capitalism" part? or the "i'll talk the talk about being the last one to give up but right after i log in to grab my daily H" part? oh i know! it's the, "blizzard has made up their mind so we can't change it" part.
Lastly, no need to bring in the dirty language, sonny. I apologize if I fail to see how making a comparison between the most deadly attack on US soil in the past half century that claimed over 3000 American lives and an internet-based invasion of privacy launched by a greedy corporation is an appropriate analogy, even if it was to make a point. I must be totally out of line, there...anyhoo, thanks for bringing what i tried to start as a civil message about awareness to a new low, and get back to me when you've canceled your account in protest. *Then* we can talk about your "backbone".
(cutaia) Jul 8th 2010 11:53PM
I'm only going to say this:
Asinine is not a dirty word, despite its aural simularity to the word "ass." (Even if it does make 6 year olds giggle almost as much as the word titmouse.)

*Page Up*
There is a link, right there, to the "Customizing and opting out of Real ID". And not only is it visible when you are reading an article, its visible ALL THE TIME. Just page to the top of the page. It's right next to other important breaking news. And knowing how this site works, it'll probably be there for a while, unless three other bombshells that are bigger than it get dropped. Possible, but not likely.
I mean, really, what do you want? One of those annoying boxes that floats down the side of your screen as you scroll down, constantly reminding you, like that ad you find on seedy websites that says "Find girls in Chicago tonight!" with equally seedy pictures?
Thank god you don't run websites. Also, (cutaia)'s example is just that - AN EXAMPLE. She was not comparing it to 9/11, or saying that this event is anything like the events of 9/11. She was simply giving us an example that we all know in order to drive her point home.
(cutaia) Jul 9th 2010 2:11AM
"There is a link, right there, to the "Customizing and opting out of Real ID". And not only is it visible when you are reading an article, its visible ALL THE TIME. Just page to the top of the page. It's right next to other important breaking news"
Oh, and don't forget the "Breaking News" box to the right, which is devoid of daily columns and other stuff so that the more important articles stay visible longer (it even has an RSS feed). Currently, 3 of the 5 Real ID articles are still on that list.
Yeah, I thought it was funnier to focus on his reaction to completely benign words than to point out that he was also arguing that wow.com should do something they already do, but I guess that's just the way I am being so innappropriate and all.
*wanders away whistling with hands in pockets*
Evelinda Jul 9th 2010 11:41AM
@matt
i think the point everyone here is trying to make is that while the real id business is, frankly, pretty crap, there are avenues for you to express your dissatisfaction about it... it doesnt need to be stated in every single article, including ones which deal with current in-game content and not future forum issues. I understand youre not happy about the situation, but that doesnt mean that an article that is about healing for a boss in game at the moment needs to address it. because its an article about healing for a boss, not about real id.
Matt Jul 9th 2010 12:27PM
@evelinda
kudos and thank you for the only civil, non-ankle biting reply to my concerns. for once i don't feel as though i'm being attacked for voicing my opinion. the point you make is valid, and although it may be reinforcing points that may or may not have already been made, just the fact that you chose to word your reply without any unneccessary sniping, browbeating, or other *asinine* methods of argument otherwise presented in this thread speaks highly of you. consider this my last post on the matter, and apologies for "shaking the tree".
