That scary GearScore/Real ID screenshot is fake, guys

There's a screenshot circulating, which is cropped above, that shows a new "beta version" of the infamous GearScore mod that is able to see your Real ID name -- that is, your real name -- just by mousing over your character. It's not real. We reported on a possible security loophole in addons that could, with enough black magic, reveal your Real ID name -- but this isn't what's happening here.
The creator of the image has admitted that the screenshot isn't real. You can officially cease linking it around and freaking out. We know that the idea your real names being on the forum might be scary, but it's important to keep a level head and not let fear take hold of your behavior, no matter what side of the issue you're on.
The important thing is that Blizzard knows how you feel. Post on the forums and let them know, cancel your account (or don't), and if you want to opt out of Real ID altogether, Robin Torres has assembled a guide on how to do just that.

I've seen about 5 of these pictures floating around. The one on this site is new to me. A player named "Lach" on Wyrmrest Accord was actually called out by his real name in an Oculus random heroic. So, if this is fake, how did that happen? Hoe many faked photos are there?

....I know that person.
Christ.
Irem Jul 8th 2010 8:52PM
I know him personally, wow. Let me find out.
Sleutel Jul 8th 2010 8:54PM
Could have been a FOAF, if he's using the RealID friends list.

"Could have been a FOAF, if he's using the RealID friends list."
Which just goes to show what a flawed system this is. :/

Unfortunately, according to Lach (who just canceled his account over this) that was not the case. Having known Lach enough through our various debates and in-game chats I believe him enough to say that he isn't lying. He doesn't readily use Real ID and really has no reason to. I'm sure if it were a friend-of-a-friend, he wouldn't be flying off the handle like this. He's level-headed enough not to cancel something he went and paid 5 months extra for over something as trivial as a FOAF messaging him in a heroic.

NO WAI! You guys know Lach too?!
Irem Jul 8th 2010 9:09PM

WOW STAFF, YOU MAY WANT TO CHECK THIS ONE... (and no, I don't usually use CAPS, as my regular reader knows)
Poster #71 on the thread linked above claims Real ID has been re-enabled on their account despite them enabling parental controls. Someone's lying, misinformed, or has just uncovered something rather scary. I'm not near enough to my WoW account to be able to verify it on my own.

That quote sounds familiar. Where's it from?
Hollow Leviathan Jul 8th 2010 9:33PM
The quote is from Ghostbusters. I use that one quote probably the most often myself!
Fallacy Jul 8th 2010 8:51PM
Thankfully, Blizzard has taken the time to respond to this issue in an understanding way which shows us all that they are listening to our issues and will address our fears, so we needn't fear that something like this will never happen in game!
Oh wait...
wutsconflag Jul 8th 2010 8:51PM
While the particular screenshot in question might have been faked, this exploit is very real.
