Call for Submissions: Best and worst ways to vet puggers

WoW.com is accepting article submissions on the best and worst ways to vet puggers for your raid group. Your article explains what works, what doesn't work -- and why. Submissions should be between 500 and 1,000 words. We will not accept articles submitted under player names or pen names; please use your real name and email. Artwork is not mandatory, but any you choose to include must be your own work or from creative commons.
Ready to submit? Read up about our guest post program, then sign up for Seed and submit your article here. (You won't see the article page unless you have a Seed account.) Unfortunately, the Seed program currently only allows us to accept submissions from individuals living in the United States. (As part of the Aol family of blogs, WoW.com is committed to the Seed program and has no control over this restriction, which is based on international payment and tax issues. We do hope to be able to accept international submissions in the future.) We'll accept submissions for this assignment until 11:59 p.m. EST on Thurs., July 15. Good luck and good writing!

Do they respond to my call for raiders. Are they the right class/spec if I need one in particular?
That's pretty much it. Then again, I only form VOA raids.
nieboh Jul 9th 2010 8:10PM
I just did a 10 man VoA on my rogue. Then the leader says "i'm forming a 25. whisper me with spec and achiev if you want in"
I had no idea where to find the achievement for VoA. It had never come up and I'd never looked. I spent a good 5 or 6 minutes searching and finally, exasperated, whispered him back that I had no idea where to find the achievement but that I'd done it plenty of times and I had just done the 10 man with him. If he had trouble finding me, just look at the top of the damage meter.
Only later did I discover it was under the PVP tab.

what do you mean by vet?
Wulf Jul 9th 2010 5:10PM
Evaluate, seperate the wheat from the chaff.... Decide who's going and who isn't.
(cutaia) Jul 9th 2010 5:11PM
Subjecting them to some kind of initial evaluation to decide if you want them in your group.
Pillowtalk Jul 9th 2010 5:21PM
oh thanks guys, ive just never heard that term in game before
Jason Jul 9th 2010 5:37PM
You're not alone; I'd never heard that either.

Vet isn't a gaming term. It just generally means figuring out if something is legitimate or not. When we get tips about things, we usually vet our sources to make sure that their claims are legitimate (or at least see if any of our other sources are aware of the same rumor).
Kaid Jul 9th 2010 6:18PM
As opposed to "send them to the vet for that little operation".

I may actually write something up for this. If you guys don't use mine, it'll make a fine addition to my guild blog. ;)

Best way: GS
Worst way: GS

Do they chat in L33t speak? Disqualified
Have they gemmed/enchanted their gear? if no - disqualified.
Do they know what VENT is? if no -- disqualified.
Gear scorer doesn't tell you if they know how to raid [could be PVP gear]. A baseline GS is reasonable, but 6k to raid ICC, really? /shrug.

Best way: See how they perform in trash pulls up to the first boss (before instance is saved)
worst way: See which two can produce the most profanity-laced argument in party or raid chat during trash pulls
Most entertaining way: See which two can produce the most profanity-laced argument in party or raid chat during trash pulls

Check to see if they are riding a sparkly horse

We pose "The GadunkaTest"
We ask in raid "hypothetically, if you are a paliden and we tell you to give us kings... what do you do? most common answer given "i'm not a pali" second most common answer, "am i the only pali?"
Mevima Jul 9th 2010 6:28PM
Um, I would give you Kings? Maybe I don't get it, is this supposed to be a trick question or a "will you buff the group" question?
Tom Jul 9th 2010 5:55PM
I allow PuGees into my raids if their response includes properly-used capital letters and punctuation. The better the English, the more likely they are to be included.
Wulf Jul 9th 2010 6:05PM
Agreed. It shows an attention to detail and a capability to understand and execute direction.
Even if their gearscore's a bit lacking, they'll likely outDPS the potsmoking, 'speelng izznt imprtint' 6k rogue who's asking about loot on a boss 3 encounters away.
nieboh Jul 9th 2010 8:18PM
Drats! I think I would fail your test. Everything would be spelled correctly. Punctuation (including apostrophes) would be in place. However, I often neglect capitalization in chat.
Tom Jul 9th 2010 10:23PM
Saying "Drats!" gets you an automatic in! :D
